4082.0. "horror show" by NAVIER::BRODEUR () Wed Oct 17 1990 13:59

now for some not so good news. i took my 6yr old to childworld last
night to pick a birthday present. as we were leaving andrea noticed
a pair of gleaming eyes across the street as my car was turning
onto rt.110, did a 180 and stoped in front of a rundown house with
several young cats milling aroung the front. a light was on but
nobody answered the door. a few more cats came around (now i was
getting worried) a water bowl that was near the steps. i got out
a container of dry food and emptied the contents and walked back
to my car. next thing cats were coming out of the woodwork (literal)
to eat the food, the horror of it was to much i left quickly before
andrea's distress got any worse. talk about a holloween nightmare.
i'm going back after work to track down the owners phone # and
maybe some neighbor info. these cats were all types and young which
can only mean trouble (especially for me) in what i'll turn up.
an uncontrolled breading house is my worse fear. a single trash
bag and the condition of the home is suspect of a single elderly
person who has lost control of the situation (at least thats what
i hope since it will make things a little easier to fix).
i'm never leaving my house again!

Thanks for caring and taking the trouble to follow-up. Please let us
    know what you find out.

I know what you mean about not leaving the house again--there are many
countries I can't vacation in. I now have to add New Hampshire as a
danger area as well (after finding Chuckie Cheese). I blame it on St
Francis of Assisi--he signed me up to be one of the army that takes
    care of cats.

Best of luck in tracking down the person responsible.

Yes, thanks for caring, and please keep us posted, we may be able to
help with spaying neutering and placement. Or maybe, with the owners
permission we can stage a "cat roundup" to get these babies off the
    streets before Halloween.

From the sounds of it, the only thing you'll need is
a lot of catfood to attract them!!!!

re.4082; had some success last night investigating the house
with so many cats in the front yard. Being of the Perry Mason
era I asked some of the neighbors for particulars of name of
the owner and anything they knew about cats in the neigborhood.
There are many elderly people living on that road and more than
willing to talk. I had to show my DEC badge to one man which
looked official enough to him to tell me name rank etc. Just
as I suspected the person with the cats they say is an elderly
woman living alone taking in cats for company. They said she
probably wouldn't answer the door since she's been robbed a couple
of times, so I left a note on her door to call me and got her
phone # out of the book but no answer. I may have to return
there with someone her age to get her to the door. So it seems
for the moment the cats have shelter and food so I have more
time to get to her in person, my vet said he would send her a
free in home vet exam for the cats if that would help get the
    info we need. {Paul and Miss Street stand by}

Could you please give us an idea of the geographic location? I really
am available for cat round up duties (as in let's get them in the the
vet for spay and returned to owner if appropriate or new homes if
not...) but I would like to know a little more. (Volunteering for

I don't know...Perry Mason...I think your more like Columbo with
your investigation!! I can just picture you walking up to the front
door, ringing the bell, opening up the lapel of your jacket,
and flashing that legal Dec Badge.

Thank you so much for caring and following up with this problem.
Please keep us posted....and if donations are needed let us know.

    REF.note 4082
Finally cornered othe elderly woman who has so many cats she doen't
know what to do. I have been leaving her cat food at the door several
times this winter hoping she would call me. But last week I waited
in my car on observation that she may go shoping on thursdays. Could
be just luck but a car pulls in front of the house to pick her up
and I walk between her and the car. Oh she says your the one leaving
the food. Yes I say, and about your 20+ cats, do they all live
with you? To my horror they are not her cats and only one comes
in. Oh people dump them here because they see the others and some
are left behind by moving neighbors. She feeds them and the look
healthy but now I see the extent of the problem. She has no objection
to someone taking them away although many a passerby have been unable
to catch one! So this shy woman who wouldn't look at me is a victim
    along with the cats.
My plan is to trap a pair for testing by the vet before deciding
what to do next. The all seem young, unusually beautiful faces,
and there's even a pure siamese in the bunch along with black, grey,
tricolor, white, everytype is there. Hope they turn out to be healty
and not to wild. Anyone interested in working with me on this case
in Chelmsford let me know. My trap is on loan at the moment but
as soon as it returns I start Operation Catstorm a.s.a.p

I want to help out (if I can....I do have a distance problem
that can be solved with enough notice)

Anyway, what are your plans? Kitten season starts soon, so
you need to set up shelters with available space to take the
cats now, and start "catching" (and delivering) right away.

I have two cat carriers and can get a net.......

Chelmsford is convenient for me, so count me in to help.
Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to foster any cats right now, but
will help in any other ways I can.
