4043.0. "Giggle, giggle, yuk, yuk, ha ha HAHAHAHA..." by BOOVX1::MANDILE () Wed Oct 03 1990 12:08

It was so funny, I just have to tell it.......
Last night, my hubby & I came home from going out
to eat. We were changing, when I could hear Rusty
    crying his, "somethings_wrong_come_help_me" cry.
(He has this certain "tone" that lets you know
    somethings wrong, immediately!)
We started searching through the house, opening
closet doors, checking under the bed, etc. until
my hubby found him in the basement. He called out
that he had found him, and said that "something"
was tangled in his fur, and to come help get it
    out........

He had a.....a SALAMANDER! It was stuck to the fur under
his armpit!!! It was so funny, with my hubby dangling
the cat, refusing to touch the salamander, screaming for
me to come take it off, all the while with Rusty wiggling
to try to see where his "catch" was!!! It must have
come in through the basement door, and the great orange/white
hunter nabbed it, only to have it get tangled in his fur!!!

(Of course, the salamander was released back outside)

Reminds me of the time out standard french poodle came in
with 3 tree toads attached to him. (Have you ever seen the
suction cup feet on those little creatures?) Pepe was shaking
and shaking and growling, and growling. Poor frogs eyes were
    as big as sauces.

We calmed Pepe down the best we could with out removing the frogs
until we all had our GOOD look at these unusual creatures. GREAT

We pulled them off with wet paper towel and put them back outside
on the tree trunk. Pepe continued to shake for hours it seemed.
We couldn't convience him they were gone.

Our cats use to tease the salamanders when we lived in Florida.
Guess they didn't taste very good though. Just once our white persian
was seen with the little legs of one such creature hanging out the
side of her mouth and was scolded (the legs disappeared inside) and
she looked guilty and that was the end as far as we knew. They still
played but never did see them eat one.

Jesse had a coat that would drag the ground, and after a rain we
used to have to cut slugs out of his fur. Yck! The only things
I hate more than snakes are slugs!

When my son was small, we lived in a house right near a river.
We'd often see these strange, silvery trails on the rug in his
bedroom in the morning. Not being a real country person, I had
no idea what was causing these trails. We found out the hard
	way one morning when he went to put his sneakers on - eeeeyukkk! :^}

4043.14Slugs for Snakes anytime!AKOV13::FALLONThu Oct 04 1990 13:3520
You guys can take the snakes any day!! I'll comne over and get the
slugs!! We used to catch them in the garden under half of a eaten
grapefruit. Put it out in the yard upside down. Then in the morning
they are all under it and then you dispose of them (I like the salt
idea) Another way is to put a small saucer of beer in the garden/yard.
    This will also attract them.

A cute story to share about how bad I hate garden snakes:

Picture this: I am laying on a chaise lounge with my portable phone, a
set of crutches, and a full leg cast to get some sun. Stinky was out
with me and i hadn't seen him for a few minutes so I called. Next
thing I see, from the other end of the house, here he comes with the
longest, grossest snake I ever saw. It was so big, he was tripping
over it. AND HEADED STRAIGHT FOR ME!!! I got up and ran so fast,
minus crutches, phone and everything!! Straight into the house.
Glad I got over that one!! So, any of you out there who are afraid of
slugs, we could work out a good deal here!
Karen, Ruby (who will NEVER know what one is), Stinky, and Wing.

Aw c'mon!! Don't you realize that somewhere out in California they
have the "Annual Banana Slug Festival"???
If you have a problem with those little-teensy-bitsy brown slugs, you
should see the Banana slug!! They're about 1 foot-and-a-half long, and
vary from tiger-stripes through pure yellow to black, depending on the
    sub-species.
This "festival" has a slug-cooking contest as part of it...and the
prize goes to the best slug recipe. Most people don't get really
turned-on with them as a food product though...

Do they miss each other when they don't make it home?

About those banana slugs...I have never seen one that was a foot
and a half long! I have seen them about 6 inches long though.
They are bright yellow like a banana (hence the name, as they say).
Anyway, they are profuse in the Santa Cruz mountains, and students
at UC Santa Cruz recently tried to get the banana slug voted in
    as the school mascot!

I have heard of the festival, but not about recipes for cooking
banana slugs. I think the story became quite a bit more interesting
by the time it got to the east coast. Folks out here don't want
to eat the darn things! :^)

     Re .25
They did a piece on one of the local newsmagazine shows about a year
ago on the festival...and they DID have a cooking contest...and they
showed one of these suckers and measured it...1 foot 6.5 inches...but
he was also stretched out when they measured him... They
DID say that this was an extremely large one, and the cooking contest
got more gagging than rave reviews on most of the recipes..
