4025.0. "A new addition (Persian) to the family..." by DELNI::HAWKINS () Tue Sep 25 1990 16:15

I am new to this NOTES file and have looked at the keyword for
Persians... but there are SO MANY.

I have always loved the look of the Persian cats and this past
week-end I was given a youngster as a gift. This is my first
Persian and I need to know all the pointers that you can share
    with me.

This little guy is solid grey with HUGE yellow eyes. He was
registered by his first owner but I have not received the papers
yet. I was told he's just under 1 year old. And, I have no
idea what a grey w/yellow is called.

I guess the first thing I should do is get a GOOD book with
information on general care. But aside from that, is there
anything that I should watch for in handling, feeding, and
caring for "Him" (he doesn't even have a name yet!). Any
    suggestions on a good book?

Any suggestions on a wonderful Persian name? (How do you say
"furface", "gift of love" or "Frank" in Persian?) Whatever he
ends up with has got to sound elegant even if it's not a great
    American name (furface?)!

This little guy loves to be brushed and he gets into the weirdest
positions while I do it. If only all my cats loved it this much....
YES...I have 3 others (of the barn breed with common names - Dennis,
    Meghan, Pedo).

Well, if you would like to send suggestions and helpful hints, I am...

    -Glenda Hawkins
     Delni::Hawkins

    and thank you very much!!!!!!

Sounds like you have a blue Persian. Can't give you any name
suggestions off hand, I have trouble enough naming my own. The
only tip I can give you is to keep up with his grooming. They knot
up really easily, and besides, they look so much prettier when they
    are well groomed.

    Congratulations on your new addition.

re: name - don't push that, a name will just "come to you" someday and
it'll be the right name. I"ve never figured out if the cat is telling
me what its name is or if I just find something that fits after I've
gotten to know the cat well enough.

    Some possible Persian names:

Bahji - joy or delight (pronounced baaa rather than the softer bah,
    which means girl servant.

    Jaleh - mist (ja leh')

    Jamal - beauty

also Pischi (Pee Shee) - a name given to me by a friend from Iran years
ago. He said it was a pet name for a kitten, meaning "kitten". I've
always like it.

He sounds as thought he looks like my guy when he was little. I have a
Blue Persian who is now 3 years old. I got him as a kitten. He is a
love! His name is Charlie - not very exotic. I thought I had a female
when I got him and named him Shalimar. When I found out my mistake, I
had to change it and wanted something that didn't sound too different
since I had been using the name....so it became Charlie. It really
seems to fit him now. He is absolutely the most laid-back and lovable
cat. I have another 4-year old Shaded Silver female Persian I got a
little over a year ago. She was very nervous and timid when I got her
but has come a long way. Her name is Shaka (she was named when I got
    her).

    Enjoy - you'll love him.

re: Pischi (Pee Shee)

This name sounds like something entirely different in the Sicilian dialect
of Italian, so expect some (strange looks)/(laughs) if a Sicilian hears you
call a cat that! (It's slang for the male sex organ.)

4025.7I love Persians, tooRATTLE::OLEARYMon Oct 01 1990 15:259
I, too, have a Persian, and he's the best kitty. I named him Dusty
because as a kitten he looked like a dust-bunny that you'd find under
the bed! Problem is, the name does fit because he loves to lay in
dust, sawdust, you name it. Makes me wish I could have found a *clean*
    name for him...

I second keeping him brushed - also, give him hairball treatment regularly.

    Enjoy!

'cause you just might get it." ;-))))))
