| When I was painting the ceiling over the basement stairs, Nebula
climbed up the ladder after me. I had to get rid of her for the
duration of the painting job (locked both kitties in the bedroom) since
I didn't think that white ceiling paint would look good on a black
kitty! I'm a pretty sloppy painter - dropcloths were made for people
like me!

4000.3 | Ladder??? Try Christmas tree!!! | RANGER::PELHAM | Life NEVER ends, it just changes | Mon Sep 17 1990 13:34 | 13 |
| louisa,
You think climbing the ladder is bad, you should be thankful it wasn't
the Christmas tree, full of antique ornaments (like our cat Felix tried
on year)! That was a ROYAL bummer! She thought she was "cute" up in the
tree, trying to knock off all the antique bulbs etc! By the time we
realized what she had done, it was too late, broken ornaments
everywhere! "Cute" certainly wasn't the word for her after we got
ahold of her!
She learned REAL fast NEVER to climb the Christmas tree again!!

When I still lived in Iowa on the farm, I had a regular rung-type ladder
to climb up and down to access the hayloft.
All the cats on my farm ran up and down that ladder like it was just a
set of stairs. (Sometimes they did interesting balancing acts if some
were going up and some were going down at the same time.)

Mitties did that this winter while we were having major
renovations done to the house. The ladder was leaning against the
house for access to the roof and I could see it clearly from the
kitchen window. I was having a glass of water, when all of a sudden
MItties!!
goes
up
I almost dropped my water as I watched her very casually walk up
the ladder like it was nothing....then I hear one of the workers say
"Hey, there's a cat up here!"
Then just as gracefully, she came down......

| My sisters kitty, Jordon, who lives upstairs from us, climbs the
porch pole to get up to the second floor porch. She just digs
those claws in and up she goes real fast. The stairs are right
next to her....but no... she likes to show off and do it the hard
way. We haven't seen her come down that way....YET!

| Sandy, Nikki does that too! He is such a character about it!! It is
his way of letting us know that he's ready to come inside if we are
upstairs. He doesn't go down that way. He will only do this if he
knows we are upstairs and can let him in.

| Roberta,
It sounds like Nikki is a bit smarter then Jordon. Atleast
Nikki only does this if you are home and can let him in. If noone
is home,,,,Jordon still insists on climbing the pole, crying at
the door, and then walks back down the stairs. Oh well...I think
it's a game for her because when she does this I feel sorry for
her and let her in my house to visit. Again they have me trained!!

The cat next door to us, indoor/outdoor named Mai Tai, loves to hang
out on the roof of her home!! She gets up there by climbing on the
deck and then on to the doghouse dormer. My neighbor says that when
she wants to get into the house, she sits on the roof outside either
the dining room, or the son's bedroom, hangs upside down until she can
see in and WAILS!!!!
It seems to work, they open the screen and let her in!!! It is the
funniest thing to see this little tabby girl sunbathing on top of the
chimney...

My male kitty, Spike, climbs anything you put him near.
He started out climbing wooden-paned windows. Flat
windows! He just dig in his claws and climb vertically
until he reached the drapery rod. Then he'd hold onto
the rod and do chin-ups! Eventually, the wooden panes
broke and the rod bent in the middle, so now he only
climbs walls and doors if you hold him next to them.

| When we had a ladder running from the ground to the back deck (one floor up),
Tigger would climb up it no problem (metal rungs, too). We were really
surprised to see him going down it, one rung at a time! He'd get all 4 paws
on a rung before going down to the next rung.
Of course, when the ladder wasn't there, he could still get up on the deck
by climbing up the side of the house. Luckily he only rarely has done this,
or we'd have no siding left!

| Vitamin likes to climb up our metal step ladder, preferably in the
middle of the night for maximum noise and effect. I nearly died the
first time I heard it and dived out of bed to rescue her. Now I just
moan and hide under the covers.
The most impressive piece of climbing I've seen her do is up a vertical
metal frame with levels about 12 inches apart which I have inside my
wardrobe (it has sliding metal drawers in it). She climbed up about
6 feet to the shelf above. I was amazed.

| Freckles, our ocicat kitten, climbs chain link fences. This is a
new trick so we are putting in a 6' picket fence around the patio.
Five cats have used the area properly and then one day Freckles got
out. Well, somebody must have not closed a door properly. Got him
and popped him out on the patio and while we were watching he used
those long narrow feet and looong toes to climb the chain link fence
link by link by link. As he climbed, he would look over his
shoulder with a "how clever am I" expression on his face.

I hate to disappoint you, but I have a 6' 6" hutch in my house that my Nicky
cat can jump onto from the floor -- one clean jump, no sweat. If the
objective is to keep your kitten in his yard, then you'd best look to creating
a covered, enclosed run...I will bet you that the first interesting smell
and/or noise he hears on the other side of that picket fence will have him
over the fence and gone. As ocicats are very valuable and distinctive looking,
if you wish to keep one around in my part of the USA, you HAVE to keep the
cat indoors and in an enclosed run...the minute they get out of the yard, they
are gone for good. My friend, Rene, learned that the hard way after losing
a beautiful male. Now, her new ocicat, Oscar, doesn't get free run of her yard
(with a 6 foot smooth-board fence) - he has an enclosed habitat - they allow
him free access to it thru a window in the kitchen -- behind the sink. He has
different levels to sunbathe in and admire the birds.
They ordered the units from an ad in a Cat Fancy magazine.

4000.16 | thanks for the tip | DNEAST::FIRTH_CATHY | owl | Fri Oct 05 1990 09:19 | 15 |
| We will watch Freckles carefully then. We can add a wire extension
if necessary.
The frustrating thing is that all 6 cats love having a 50' X 200'
"safe area". The other 5 cats can be contained relatively easily.
Fortunately in terms of theft we also are in a safe area for
animals, lawn decorations etc. (Maine). The only worry we have is a
car hitting an animal which is why the containment in the first
place. No stray cats have been sufficiently motivated to scale
the wall .... everyone being neutered may play a part in that.
Thanks for the tip though.

4000.17 | clothes drying rack!!! | BTOVT::MUNROE_R | I'll give it a whirl! | Mon Oct 08 1990 16:42 | 5 |
| I have a 4' tall folding clothes drying rack which my 3 month olds
insist on climbing like a jungle gym. It is quite cute but often the
crashes scare me. Too much trouble to lock them out of that room,
since they need the room-- my apt. is small.
