3995.0. "more worries for outdoor kitties" by PARITY::DENISE (And may the traffic be with you) Wed Sep 12 1990 22:41

Well, something else to be worried about for those who let their
kitties go out..... I read in my local paper today about a lady who
had her cat shaved. She came home and found her cat had been shaved
and kind of cut up in the process. I assumed the poor cat survived
well enough, the article didn't go into any more detail. This was
in Haverhill, Mass., by the way....gee Halloween isn't even here
    yet!

What does shaving have to do with Halloween?

The only time I keep my cats in is November 5th, just in case the
	fireworks frighten them.

I don't really know why I bother, Cider got out last time, sat on the
patio, and was jumping up at the sky, trying to "catch" the rockets.

When I got him back in, he sat on the windowsill and watched. Yoda
	slept through it all anyway!

This answer is blunt and unpleasant. If that bothers you, don't read
the rest.

in the USA, all hallows eve is traditionally a time when children play
practical jokes on people. Unfortunately, a large segment of the
population have no moral compass to guide their relationship to animals,
in particular, cats. These individuals are quite capable of doing
unbelievably horrible things to cats/dogs/birds if they can catch them.
Any cat that is outside on halloween is vulnerable. Black cats are
guarenteed to be in danger. Pranks like having your cat shaved are mild..
the cat will recover. Last halloween, some young boys caught some cats
and removed most of their skin, leaving them to die near our home. This
is not a slum area, but a suburb of San Jose Ca. where the average house
price is $250,000+. It is not unusual things like this to happen in any
part of the country.

If you have cats, keep them in for 3 or 4 days before halloween thru to 3 or 4
days after halloween. Your cat may not like it, but you may never see
your cat again if you do not protect it during this time.

Thanks for the warning not to read the rest of the note, but...

I didn't hit return, but for those of us with workstations and BIG
windows, the remainder of the message glowed brightly. I try real hard
not to read notes that give me nightmares and I appreciate the thought
when noters put in that form feed, but maybe there is some other way
that us DECwindows noters can avoid such notes. I never would have
read Jack's note on that horrid person, but I didn't have much choice.

Does anyone know how to conceal a page to us DW users??

I didn't realise that practical jokes were part of haloween.

I only lived through one halloween when I was in the states, and I went
	to New York.

The thing that sticks in my memory is all the outlandish costumes, I had
	a great time.

It is a real shame that these types of things are allowed to happen.

re 3995.4 - mary's note on hiding notes from DECwindows noters:

I use NOTES/NODECWINDOWS to get the old NOTES interface on my
workstation, but anyways... I'm told that to hide remainders
of notes, you have to bury them behind a large number of blank lines,
like 30 or so... I just tried this - it's so much easier to just
insert a formfeed, but for DECwindows noters, we should probably get
into the habit of inserting 30 blank lines instead when we really
    want to hide things.

    hope this helps.

It's a halloween prank here (thankfully not TOO common) for the kids to
write on cars/car windows with bars of soap or paraffin wax. It's
pretty annoying to have to clean up...

I'd vote against all those blanks, on a slow network they're really
	frustrating.

And back to practical jokes, Yup, I've definately played a few in
the past, but not on Halloween.

We used to scoop out the middle of a turnip, cut a O O face
							         V
and put them on top of the garage
							       XXXXX

Still, if this does go on there, then it's wise to keep the cats in for
	a few days.
