3982.0. ""Under the Tire"" by RANGER::PELHAM (Hey, don't I know you?) Thu Sep 06 1990 15:43

Hi folks, some of you might remember me from notes 3059 &
    3072...."Under the Knife"????

Well our famed cat Felix, has gotten herself into a bit more trouble!
For the past 5 years or so she's developed a VERY bad habit of walking
in front of our cars as we drive up the driveway when we get home from
work each day (almost as she's greeting us or something). Anyway, last
night Felix decides to walk in front of my Mothers car while she's
driving up the driveway...Mom saw her and stopped the car (as we always
do and the Cat knows this, that's why she's not afraid to continue this
habit of hers) but then she figured that Felix must be on the other
side of the car, because she couldn't see her anymore. Well, instead
of getting out of the car to make sure, she kept driving and the car
    went right over Felix!

Now remember, Felix is 17yrs old, and miraculously (sp?) recovered from
Thyroid surgery last fall....anyway I almost had a heart attack when Ma
came in the house last night and told me that she thought she might
have hurt Felix.....She saw Felix run under the bushes when she parked
the car (she actually felt the car go right over the cat), she knew she
DID go over her, and sure enough, there was my baby Felix laying under
the bushes, SCARED and not moving very much....

Needless to say, we FLEW up to the Vets and he looked her over and
listened to her breathing (BTW her breathing sounded "watery", like she
was gurggling) checked her for broken bones etc.... He told us that
she MUST be bleeding internally and that the outcome didn't look good
    :^(

We left her there last night with little hope of ever seeing her again,
I called this morning (bright and early) to see if she had made it
through the night, and all the prayers paid off! She survived the
night, and the assistant told me that she was even sitting up! What
great news, I cried my eyes out when I heard the good news (I was so
prepared for the worst that I didn't even think she had a chance!),
relieved I guess! I thanked God right away!

I went to visit her this morning and when I called her name, she looked
up immediately! Thank God she wasn't still in shock and she knew who I
was, she was licking my hand and purring well, she even butted her head
up against my arm as to say "more patting me please"?? They had an IV
in her front leg to keep fluids in her and to help stop any internal
blleding. Her spirits seemed well but not fantastic...I hope she pulls
through. I realize that she's old, and she won't live forever, but I
couldn't stand the thought of her dying over such a terrible mistake!

Thanks for listening, you've helped so much in the past. Maybe some of
you have experienced this before? Not that I'm hoping you have, but
please, if so, lend me some info on what to expect when we take her
    home.

    Thanks,

    Mel :^)

3982.1Oh, poor baby! Give hug to Felix for us.SONATA::BERGERONThu Sep 06 1990 15:4811
    Mel,

Poor poor Felix. What a horrible thing to have happen...you must have
    been beside yourself.

Glad to hear that he made it through the night and that he appears to
be recovering. I will say a prayer for him tonight and hope that he
gets 100% better and gets to come home soon.

I'm so glad Felix seems to be on the mend. Please keep us informed.
My neighbors' outdoor cats do this. I've taken to honking to
"scare" them out of the driveway if they don't get out of the
way. (Too bad if the neighborhood doesn't like the noise.)

3982.3bizarre story!!!BTOVT::MUNROE_RDon't Bug MeThu Sep 06 1990 15:546
That story was terrible. I wish the best. However, I am curious-- how
could she have not been completely squished?

    Good luck,

3982.4Felix=Feeby's for nickname, since she's female :^)RANGER::PELHAMHey, don't I know you?Thu Sep 06 1990 16:1411
I'm telling you, "miracles" do happen!!!! I can't understand it
either. My mom is definite that the car went over her, Felix (a female
cat BTW) was definitely bleeding internally, you could tell by the way
her breathing sounded from the Docs Stethicope (SP?) etc, but I can't
figure out for the life of my how she escaped this one w/one at least 1
broken bone in her whole body!

She's very lucky to be breathing at this point! And we're very lucky
    as well!

    Mel
3982.5More on her condition....RANGER::PELHAMHey, don't I know you?Thu Sep 06 1990 17:284
Also, when we brought her into the Docs, she couldn't stand or
walk...Doctor said it was because she was soooooo weak.

3982.6Nine Lives for Sure!CSSE::PPARKERThu Sep 06 1990 17:4612
My cat, Tom A. Cat, who is twelve years old, did the exact same thing
one morning when I was on my way to work. He ran in front of my car
and I definitely felt my tire go over him after I thought he was out of
harms way. He took off and we couldn't find him. I cried all the way
to work and then a couple of hours later, my daughter called me to tell
me he was in the kitchen eating and seemed fine. It turned out that
nothing could found to be wrong with him and people didn't believe that
I ran over him, but I know I did. Its been nine months now and Tom is
still in excellent health. I guess cats do have nine lives so not to
worry, Felix may be O.K. still!

    Mel,

You are definitely going to have to set Felix down and have a serious
talk with her. :^) Ladies of her age and stature should know better
than to walk out in front of cars. :^)

Seriously though, I do hope that she will be okay.

Best wishes to Felix for a quick recovery. We'll say a little prayer
    tonight.

Poco use to do this too....but I also layed my hand on the horn
real loud and long...until I scared her away. That's a real nasty
    habit!!

3982.9We prayed more again last night.....RANGER::PELHAMHey, don't I know you?Fri Sep 07 1990 09:0220
Well, today's another day! We went to visit Felix last night after
work, we brought her milk & food (because she wouldn't eat for the Vet)
and she just layed there! She LOVES milk, but she wouldn't even try to
    drink it :^(

Her spirits were down, she seemed like a totally different cat from
yesterday morning when she was purring and licking my hand. She
wouldn't even lick my hand last night. Then I found out why....she has
suffered some lung damage (her lungs were having convulsions) and she
had been on medication all day to help prevent more damage from
occurring....also the Doc thinks that she has more internal injuries,
but he can't pin-point them as of yet! He told us to hope her body can
repair the damage done to her lungs and leave it at that. He wasn't
surprised that she had no appetite.

I'll tell ya, she didn't seem the same at all.....what a big difference
in her attitude from yesterday morning! I hope this weekend lifts her
    health a bit!

Poor Felix. I was going to ask if perhaps she had a punctured lung.
I'll say my prayers for her. I'll be willing to be that if she
recoveres from this she'll stay well away from cars in the future.

    Keep us posted. :-(

You and Felix have our prayers as well. My mother's cats all do

My Patches the Stray does the same thing. I always start the car, get
out and go around to see where she is and then get back in and drive
off. My mother ran over a dog that she was taking care of and I also
saw a little puppy get run over the same way. We just can't see them
through the windows. I really hope Felix will be OK. Cats are amazing
creatures and have been known to survive many, many things. My prayers
    are with you.

body and everything. He said the dog was a bit dazed for a while,
but was fine in about an hour. He took him to the vet's, but they

I've been praying to the "kitty Angel" on an hourly basis (actually
    more like minutely)!!

I have good faith that the Vet is doing everything they can for her,
we've been going to the same Vet for years before Felix (with other
animals etc). He even called me last night at 9:15pm to talk to me
about her because I had some questions about her behavior etc. I'm so
glad he called, it set my mind at ease for the time being....

I just got off the phone w/the Vets....Get this one (talk about your
heart stopping!), I called and the assistant answered, I told him I was
calling to check status of Felix's condition.. He put me on hold to go
& check on her and I was waitinf for what seemed to be a long time.
Well if that didn't worry me enough, the Doctor comes on the phone!! I
was very nervous at that point to hear his voice and not the
assistant's. I was expecting him to give me BAD news when just then he
started to tell me that Felix seemed to be doing better today!!!! She
even ate some of her food and her breathing was beginning to sound more
normal than the 2 previous days!

I'll tell ya, he sure gave me a scare when he came to the phone after
such a long wait! You understand I'm sure, usually one waits soooo
long on the phone for what ends up to be HORRIBLE news like, oh the
animal has passed away etc.... But not this time Feeby's!! He's gonna
keep her one more night (maybe two) and keep monitoring her breathing
and heart rate. Oh ya, that's another thing, her heart rate was better
also! She's really coming along MUCH better today. We'll see tonight
when I go for our visit!

    Thanks everyone!! :^)

limping on her front legs, but I think that's due to the fact that she

I am so glad to hear that Felix is doing better. She is probably
incredibly sore after her bout with the car, that might explain
her limping. I know what it is like to go one day at a time with

Looks like the future is bright for both Laci and Felix now. :^)

Hopefully Felix has already learned a lesson and training him
will be very easy. What we always did was...anytime one of our
kids was laying in the driveway and refused to move...I would
lay on the horn (sorry neighbors) and if that didn't work
I would put the car in park and rev the engine. That usually
worked and now when they see a car comming....they run away!

    Sandy,

That's like me, I got Felix when I was 9 yrs old. She was this scrawny
little thing drinking from a puddle of oil at the garage (our family
auto parts business), anyway I named HER felix not knowing HE was a
SHE! But 7-8 months later she had kittens and we figured it out!! HA!
So from then on we've called her anything from Felix to Fleabags!! She
    responds to anything it seems.

This is how we got Fleabags from Felix:
    	Felix
    	Feebee
    	Feebees
Fleabees (when she gets fleas) she's an outdoor cat, and we have a
    heavily wooded backyard
    	Fleabags

But she's a good sport about it! Hee hee hee I just LOVE my baby
kitty (even if she's an old lady now, I still call her my "baby")
