3970.0. "Cat Culture and Their Human Families" by BTOVT::MUNROE_R (I set my feet upon the rock) Fri Aug 31 1990 12:46

I was just wondering. I think every family with cats develops a
special culture-- like having certain names for cat positions:

we call the Sphynx position with front paws underneath "Breadloaf
position" and when our cat sat on the corner of a bed, piece of paper,
    rug, it was "cornoreating".

We could never keep one name for our cat-- it always changed: Cinders,
then kitty, then kitten-greyness, then Cassandra, the Grey Monster, the
Most Beautiful Kitty in all the Land... then ... It didn't much matter
because after she didn't respond (read this-- ignore) to Cinders, we
just called her whatever we felt. Of course, we only had one cat.

But, we extended our infatuation with our cat to inserting "kitty" or
"cat" into any song we knew or felt like singing. Our favorite was
"What a friend we have in Kitty"-- not to be sacreligious, but hey, it
fit. Of course, this habit, with popular songs drove others not in our
house crazy. But it was funny. Other examples might be "The cat'll
come out tomorrow..." Sure was sick. Do other people do this? Are we
    crazy?

Lets discuss cat family culture. I find it interesting. Any other
names? Labels for cat positions, weird things to honor?

Well, Murdock does these things I call "power flops." I really can't
take credit for the name; another Deccie used the term and I thought it
was great. What happens is that Murdock will casually walk into a room
then suddenly flop down onto his side and make bread with his paws. He
doesn't just lay down but goes right from a standing position to a
    flop. Really cute.

We also sing silly songs to the cats; I can't think of any right now.
Usually one of the cats will be doing so

We too have different names - depending more on their behavior and
    response...than anything else.

Take Otis for example: Look in his eyes and he has been here before.
    He's almost 1 1/2 - weighs 22 pounds...neutered and still has those
damned fingernails. He walks like his _you.know.what's_ are still
there and weigh 5 lbs each...Mr. Stud! He struts. Behaves more like a
dog than a cat. This morning he was *ticked* off at me for not going
downstairs to feed him (3:30 a.m. mind you) so he knocked the Fern
plant off the wall unit and chewed the leaves off. Must admit though,
he did a nice job. Completely even all the way around! I got on the floor
to clean it up - and he laid there on the floor with me and stared me in
the eye as if to see 'gotcha'! Has a fascination with toilets, tearing
newspapers, can kill a fly in mid-air, has once a week 'hissies' and if
he is sleeping on the dining room chair - when you walk by he will grab
the nearest piece of material and/or flesh (through the rungs) and scare
the bejeezus out of you. He's 'Oat' when I come through the door - 'Otis
Thaddeus' when I am _p*ssed_ off at him - 'Otis baby' when he snuggles
and 'darlin' when he's sleeping next to me:

Tiffany. She's the queen! Kissy face and the one to greet people at
the door. She has all the social graces of Royalty and pukes whenever
she gets upset. Delicate stomach. If you look at her the wrong way I
swear she has tears in her eyes. Always looking for approval. She
looks down at simple fun (it's beneath her) and waits for YOU to come
to her. Afraid of her own shadow and Otis intimidates her! Tiff when
I walk through the door, Tiffer when she's playful, Tifferbelle for the
hell of it, and Tiffarino when I'm upset. You DON'T get mad at Tiff,
just mildly irritated...she cries too easily and you feel TERRIBLY
    guilty.

Sam. Well, he's just a love. Talks all the time - demands 100% of
my/anyone's attention. Drinks water all the time, devoted, loyal,
giving, gentle and quiet. He does get aggressive at times - especially
when I am holding Otis. Toonces - 1/2 the time - cause he looks like
the cat on Saturday Night Live that drives like a maniac and survives
EVERYTHING. And, he is a survivor.

Quirks? One litter box for urinating - and one for poops! God, are
they fussy. I know which one to change first, though.

3970.4Could go on for ever ...CHEFS::SIFTSFri Aug 31 1990 13:1338
`Look no legs!' - when cat is sitting with all its feet underneath it

Pandora walks around `with her hands in her pockets, and a cigarette in
the corner of her mouth, whistling' (she really does look like this)

All cats have poacher's pockets, which they use to bring mice and other
small creatures into the house, later releasing them when no one is
    looking

`I spy with my little eye a mouse' - game cats can play all evening,
moving from kitchen unit to kitchen unit. The idea is to persuade all
human inhabitants to spend the evening face down on the kitchen floor
with a torch, or, better still, to persuade said humans to begin
dismantling the kitchen (there usually is a mouse, and this game
then develops into another game `chase the mouse around the house')

Appearing and disappearing at will. Not all cats can do this one.
Pandora is an expert. She is particularly good at materialising in
unexpected places (out of nowhere), for example the top of the wardrobe
where she has been disguised as a black velvet riding hat,and
frightening people to death. Prudence (at 12 weeks) is learning -she's
going to be good at it. Oliver (at nearly 10 years) is completed
    useless.

`Cats wearing clogs' - when they run around the house, apparently
wearing iron shoes. The opposite of appearing and disappearing by
    magic.

`What cat? Not my cat!' - when the neighbours ask what happened to the
turkey they left defrosting by an open window

`Who me? Innocent little me?' all cats, when caught doing something
    they shouldn't.

3970.5and more to come . . .GEMVAX::GRANTFri Aug 31 1990 15:1450
Tank Position:

When Sly or Midway lay down with back legs under their bodies,
and front legs curled around and tucked up against their
chests. Both of them have very broad chests, and look just
like little tanks when they do this.

Having a "White Club" Meeting:

When Sly and Paws (the only ones with white on their chests
and paws) cuddle up together, and don't let anyone else join.

Collapse-A-Kitty:

When Adrienne falls down at your feet at the slightest touch
(or even without being touched), and cries to be petted.

Camouflage Kitty:

When Adrienne, Springer, or Midway stretch out flat on the
oval area rug in the family room. The color/pattern of the rug
is so close to the color/markings of the cats, the cats just
	kind of disappear.

Beaming Down Late:

From the time that Paws did not show up for supper (something
that had never happened before), and we looked everywhere for
her with no luck, and then 5 minutes later she was at the plate
eating the leftovers. We figured that she just "beamed down late".

Cutting Corners in Space and Time:

From the short story "Space Time for Springers". Usually to
indicate when we see a cat *here*, then suddenly the cat is
*there*, but no one ever saw the cat leave *here*, or on its
	way to *there*.

Ceiling Kitty:

From the time that Paws ran straight up the closed door to
the bedroom at the end of the hallway, hung there for a
moment, then jumped down. A friend was over at the time, and
he did not see Paws run up the door. Instead, he looked up
just in time to see her jumping down. To him, it looked like
there was a cat jumping down from the ceiling . . .

Life with kitties is great!

3970.8thing we MUST do for our kittiesGEMVAX::GRANTFri Aug 31 1990 16:5757
Taking the kitty for a drag:

This is a game. If I open a cabinet door and do not close
it fast enough to keep Adrienne from running into the cabinet,
I must grab her by the scruff of the neck, pull her out of the
cabinet, and then drag her around the floor.

This is not a punishment. She likes it. If she gets in the
cabinet and I do not pull her out and drag her around the
floor, she opens the cabinet door, stands there, and cries.

"All kitties can come up":

When I am ready for bed (bedroom is upstairs), before I
go upstairs I must first say "All kitties can come up."
I don't know why I ever started doing this, but ever since
the first time I did, I locked myself into always saying
it. The cats like being notified when it's bedtime, and get
a little ornery if I go to bed and don't let them know ahead
	of time.

Food flickies:

This is when I sit on the kitchen floor, take kitty treats,
and flick them across the floor so that the cats can chase,
kill, and eat the kitty treats.

This is a must after clipping claws. If I do food flickies
immediately after clipping claws, the cats forgive me. If
I don't do food flickies after clipping claws, the cats
snub me for the rest of the day.

Upside down kitty:

This is when I hold Adrienne upside down, over my head, so
that she can reach the wooden beams on the ceiling with her
paws. She clamps her claws into the wood, and then either stays
like that and hangs her head so that she is looking at everything
upside down, or she "walks" along the beam like a three-toed
sloth (with me still holding her, of course).

Making a tent for the kitty:

Before I leave for work each morning, Sly lays down on the
couch in the living room. I must then cover him with a little
afghan, making kind of a tent for him, so that only his head
	shows.

Very often the "tent" is still there (and still warm inside)
when I get home; but of course Sly is at the door waiting for
	his kitty supper.

You know, I can understand WHY we do some of the things that we do for
our cats; I just don't understand how we ever STARTED doing some of
them.

Sometimes when I am holding either Kalliste or Moody, they will
hold out one paw, and spread all the toes apart. They don't knead,
they just spread out their toes. We call this "making big feet".
It seems to be a like father like son thing, as none of the others
    does it.

    Bending the cat:

That is when you pick up the cat, cuddle him or her on his back
like a baby, and then hold them out so that their head, front legs
and back legs all meet in the middle.

We also do upside-down-kitty. Tilly loves this. She will do upside
down kitty with only Ken's only hand for support in the middle of
her back. We also play "chase spiders" with Laci and Tilly. This
is where each of us takes one cat and holds it up to the wall so
that they can chase a spider. Whichever cat gets the spider first
wins. Of course, whichever cat Ken is holding usually wins, cause
he is 6'1" and I am only 5'4".

(cat name)brush - all one word...like "Hannahbrush" or "Nickybrush" means it's
time for the named cat to run to my bathroom or Marge's bathroom (depending
on the cat), jump up on the counter and wait to be brushed. They LOVE this
game - and my allergies love the dander and saliva flakes NOT BEING on the
cat.

Hannah "HELP" - the monkey cat takes her responsibilites for running the
house very seriously -- when I go out to do errands on a weekend, I tell
her to stay and help Marge clean house...and she DOES...she is into everything.
Marge doesn't appreciate this as much as I do - but I love the tales of
Hannah's adventures that Marge tells when I return.

Cat positions:

catambush - when a cat is detected laying very low to the floor, with tail
flashing back and forth, at a corner, waiting for an unsuspecting human or
cat quarry to pass by...when they do, WHAMMO - they are subjected to a
flying-ankle-tackle...which I know I don't need to describe.

catcamoflage - when Hannah, cream with light flame points, snuggles down
in the bathroom sink - marbled to match her coloring very well.

basketcat - the famous NO LEGS ANYWHERE pose, just the perfect size to fit
in a basket.

catmelt - when one of the cats is laying in the "step-down" living room floor
with his head and/or front paws resting on the step up entry way. they
tend to sleep this way, looking like a cat that has melted over the step
due to too much heat.

Names:

Hannah is "Missy Hannah" or "Missy Cat" or just plain "Missy" if she is
in my good graces. She is "Hannah Lee Wilde" when she is opening cabinet
doors and getting into the pantry or the pots and pans.

Nicholas is "Nicky Cat" or "Nick" unless he is chewing up my magzines...then
he is "Nicholas Wilde".

Tabitha is just "Tabby" or "Tabitha".

Samson is always "Sam" unless he is asking you to come play at 3:00 A.M....
then he is "Lardbutt" or "Vampirecat"...depending on whether he is ON me
or beside me on the bed.

Most of ours are Andy's inventions:

'Bog-brush tail' - 'Bog' is UK slang for toilet, and when Jenny or
C.C. get surprised, their tails tend to get all puffed out. Funny,
but the boys don't seem to get this way . . .

'Paws in top pockets' is how Andy describes the folded-paws look.

Purring is 'froo-ing' 'cause that's what it sounds like when they
get *very* excited. This can also be synonymous with the head-rubs
you get when they're happy to see you.

'Beetle-y' is what they are when they're chasing after each other
all over the house. (As in 'he beetled across the street'.)

'Cat arranging' is when you take a very sleepy cat and change its
position. There's beginning, intermediate, and advanced cat-
	arranging, depending on how silly you can make the cat look. :^}

Ummm lessee. In my house we have...

The Rips - this is when one of our kitties all of a sudden decides
to race around the house at lightning speed.
Seemingly chasing something that neither Cary or I
can see. Sasha does this the most. It's beneath
    			Brandi =)

Wigglewigglepounce - this is what we call the crouch-low-to-the
ground with tail swishing position. Sasha again
does this the most and it's usually to either
pounce on Chloe or Brandi (much to their dismay)
or her little plastic can or catnip ball. If it's
Chloe or Brandi they hiss and run away. if it's
the plastic can, she bats it around on the floor.
And if it's the catnip ball she picks it up in
her paws and flops over on her back rolling it
around between her paws. When she's done she rolls
back over and sits with the ball under one paw as
if to say "Tada! I got it!"
Prettykitty - This is Chloe's game. She sees either Cary or I
walking toward her and immediately flops down and
rolls over onto her back and stretches out so that
we can rub her tummy with our foot. She ppprrppps!
    			up a storm.
Ragdollkitty - Again with Chloe. This is when either Cary or I
pick her up with one hand and hold her above our
head. She just sits there. (we don't do it for
very long of course cuz I'm sure it's not good for
    			her back)

Slutkitty - When one of them lays on the floor all spreadeagle.
    		Brandi does this the most.

Nicknames... Sasha - Momma's baby, Momma's pain in the butt, Momma's
    		 pretty Sasha kitty.

Chloe - Wimpkitty, The Abominable Snowcat, Chloekitty,
Pain in the a@@ (she likes to pee everywhere but the
    		 litterbox)

    		 Brandi - Daddy's baby, Brandislutkitty, Killer (she's
    		 a good mouser)

Minnesota Cats -
After Mom and Dad finish playing pool, the cats jump up and start batting the
leftover balls around. We have to be careful before starting a game, however.
One time Peaches disappeared in the house, couldn't find her anywhere. We
happened to walk by the pool table and saw a pair of eyes staring at us from
one of the pockets!

Bumper Kitties -
Each cat jumps into and crouches in their respective shoebox. Mom and Dad
then push the shoeboxes all over the livingroom - just like bumpercars at the
amusement parks. We really don't bump them into each other, they usually take
a swat at the other as they pass by. They love this game, you can actually
see the smiles on their faces.

The Bumpy-crouch or "meatloaf cat" is what we call that position
when the cats squat with no feet showing anywhere.

"doing cute" is when the cat rolls over on its back (usually done
by Bumpytail) and looks at you upside down because it wants attention.

"Patty-paws" aka kneading bread or happy paws.

"Armpit cat" is usually Isis who will try to crawl into our armpits
for some unknown reason all the while drooling and purring.

If anyone's interested, there's a hysterical note in here about kitty

conversation with your cat by a "non-cat person".

    They just don't understand......:-)

"Pig-pile" - When the four "guys" are all piled up
together in the middle of the bed.

"Want a fish?" - All cat treats are considered "a fish"
because some of them where shaped like fish.
You can get all the cats in the same place
by yelling this out in a high, squeaky voice.

"Basket?" - They love to get into the laundry baskets, empty, full,
upside down, etc. They especially enjoy being dragged
or carried around the house in it.

"Get the Buggy" - Announced in a loud voice, all the guys will
stare at the ceiling, looking for the bug.
Once located, it's every cat for itself to
try to catch it. Sometimes we help by lifting
them up to the bug. :-)

"Seep Seep" - When its time for bed, I announce this so that
they know when we are going to bed. (sleep sleep)
And also so that B.K. knows it time to go to bed

ritual of screaming in dad's face while sitting on dad's

"Shuffleboard" - Casey adores being shoved across the floor while
lying on his back, like he's a shuffleboard disk.
The record distance is about 10 feet. (on carpeting)

"Kitty-drag" - When one of the guys wraps himself around a human ankle
and gets taken for a "drag" down the hall.

"Pervert!" - Whenever they get caught sticking their face in another

3970.19cat game with rulesTYGON::WILDEillegal possession of a GNUWed Sep 05 1990 13:5324
The gang of four have invented a game...with rules. The game is the regular
old "TAG - YOUR IT!" game played with any number more than 2...the rules are
the interesting part. Hannah has taught everycat that the laundry basket
is "SAFE" -- and the cat that gets into the laundry basket before being tagged
cannot be tagged or touched in any way until he/she gets out of the basket.
The game goes like this:

cat 1 sneaks up on an unsuspecting victim, gets up on tip toes, fakes a
dodge to the left, hops to the right and "tags" cat 2 on the head...and
makes a mad dash out of the room with cat 2 in hot pursuit. Cat 2 can
either pursue cat 1 or tag cat 3, who will then pursue cat 1 and cat 2
in a high speed chase throughout the house. When any cat being pursued
begins to flag, he/she can make a b-line for the laundry basket (kept
in my bedroom on the floor for just such occasions) and leap in...at which
point all other cats screech to a halt beside the basket and wait patiently
until the resting cat decides to begin again...or until he/she settles
in for a nap...at which point the pursuers go to find a nap spot as well.
If the game continues, the resting cat will finally peek over the edge
of the basket to get the lay of the land...and then pop up, tag a pursuer
on the head, shoot out of the basket, and the chase is again on.

When Hannah moved in, she invented this game with Tabby. Now all the cats
play, and all use the laundry basket as the "safe" spot....clearly an
example of "old cats learning new tricks".

A cute act in my house is to watch Pashenka, my red classic boy,
do his version of "Happy Tail" - when ever there is a hint of
people food around, Shenka is 'johnny_on_the_spot' with the
hair at the base of his tail all bushed out - it's really weird!
He only bushes about the bottom 3 inches of hair and then he
prances. It's really cute to watch him.

Head butts - that what the cats are doing when they tuck their chins
to their chests and then bump you with the top of their foreheads.
It is quite an honor to be head butted.

Bless you's - Hannah answers back everytime I sneeze...this is a riot when
I have bad allergies...my roommate hears me sneeze, and then she hears a
gentle response from Hannah....over and over until the antihistamine takes
effect. She never misses.

Nose honks - when Nick wants breakfast, he will first try and be nice
about it...which we appreciate at 5:30 in the morning...but if you aren't
up by 7:00, he will walk up to your head and push the end of your nose
with his paw, repeatedly, like someone honking a horn. I sometimes don't
want to get up, so I attempt to hide my head under the covers, but he is
determined...he simply sticks his leg under the covers and feels around
until he finds a nose...which he proceeds to push on repeatedly until
I get up. These are "nose honks". It's okay when he does it to me,
I understand what is happening...but when I have an overnight guest who
happens to be the first person to "stir" in the morning, it can be a
little strange until I explain the ritual and what it means. He even
honked the end of my mother's dog's nose one day. I wish I could have
captured the expression on that dog's face on film.

Tail dances - Sam is the quiet one, he never cries. However, he is also
the cat with the most expressive tail. The tail says all. When he is
happy or frisky, he will hold his tail straight up and dance it around
in a little circle to express pleasure. We call it "tail dancing".

These are really great...I see so many familiarities!

Head Butts - Tamba loves to give head butts to any human or any
other cat. It's to the point that when I get home
I get down on all fours and we both stand like bulls
ready to butt heads. Boy am I trained or what!!

Get the buggy - This is fun to watch all kitties chase after one
bug. It usually is the start of the heavyweight
champion fight...where all cats go crazy boxing.

Pervert Pose - This is similiar to the Porno Pose. Whenever a
human or cat goes near Poco...she automatically
lays down on her back, legs spread wide, with this
                 very seductive look.

Prancing - Barkley is the prancer...he was a stray and I swear
he guards the house by prancing up and down the yard.
His hind legs go higher then the front, the chest is
out straight, and his head is held high.

Bum Wiggle - Everyone knows the famous bum wiggle. It's always
happens just before my kitties are ready to bounce
on their prey. Now the prey could be anything from
a toe ...piece of dust...leave...or another animal.
That little bum wiggles is so cute.

Re. Jo and Sandy - we call them 'head butts' too. C.C. is the
most avid butt-er, and we have to get down on the floor with her
as well. Tas usually only does it when we're eating something
	particularly enticing - like a Domino's pizza :^}

E.T. My D.P. Gremlin has this too! I've never seen it on any other cat
before. Glad to hear about another cat who has this. :-)

Ha, I'll have to tell Shenka that there is another weirdo
just like him! When this silly cat is excited, he jumps up
off the floor - all four feet are off the floor! So there he
is, doing happy tail, popping up and down like a jack-in-the-box!
He's a real piece of silly work! And PURRRR - this guy has the
    LOUDEST pur I've ever heard!

I'm a little late, but I'll put my favorites in...

Suuuuper Kiiity - This was invented while I was holding Nami up looking
		  for bugs.
I hold her up way above my head with one hand
under her under-arms(if cats have under-arms)
and one hand under her hips. She stretches her legs
out as far as she can and arches her back. Her tail
streaming behind looks like the cape.
Then I fly her around the room and she looks for bugs
		  prrrupping all the time.
Sometimes we have to dodge dangerous objects dangling
		  from the ceiling.
Trick kitty - This is where she puts her forehead on the ground for a
second, then all of a sudden does a summer sault to end
up in the "slut kitty"(we use this too) position.
