| The paw pad is just tissue, or skin, or flesh or whatever you want
to call it. The paw pad allows the cat to grip (well that isn't
exactly the word I want, but you get the idea). If the foot was
all furry, the cat wouldn't be very steady on it's feet, it would
slip around all the time. Paw pads are kind of like rubber soles.
Could be that in the fight the other cat cut her with his/her claws.
Her immune system may have just fought off the infection on it's
own, without abscessing. The foot would still have been sore from
the cut.
Glad to hear that she is better now.

| that's what I was thinking, but I haven't been able to get ahold of my
vet (and I haven't been trying too hard....it is her vacation). I will
be seeing her Monday, but this thing has me puzzled. She went from
totally sore to being fine in less than 48 hours.....maybe a sliver or
something was stuck in her foot and she worked it out herself.....who
knows.....

| She broke a tooth from fighting? When I got my Pussycat, he had a
broken tooth, and I asked the vet about a fight, and he said No, it
must have been something worse to do that. I don't remember if he was
speculating about a car, or a bad person. Also maybe it matters that
it was one of the biggie fang teeth, not a little one.

other cat probably looks worse ;-)

| The tooth that broke was one of the biggie fangs, but it was just the
tip. She appears fine now, is eating good. There have been several
strays in my neighborhood lately, and I hope she's just been out
fighting cats instead of who knows what (Does this indicate she should
trade in the fine clothes and bridge club for leather and harleys?)

3935.7 | Could be a bee sting.... | MCIS5::MCDONOUGH | | Thu Aug 23 1990 10:37 | 24 |
| My "Cookie" just lost MOST of one of her "canine" teeth last week. We
took her to our Vet Tuesday, and he said she probably either fell from
something and hit the tooth or something fell on her during one of her
"exploration" episodes. He did NOT think she'd been in a fight, since
ther was no other mark of any kind elsewhere on her body, and if she'd
been fighting there should have been at LEAST some spots where fur had
been removed... She only has the stump left...snd she's currently on an
antibiotic for about a month while the stump has a chance to either
loosen up or fall out. If it doesn't fall out on its' own, the Vet will
remove it to prevent possibilities of abcessing. He wants to wait to
let it loosen, since he said witht he size of a cat's jaw it's a very
delicate operation since the jaw itself is so tiny there is some danger
of breaking it if too much force on the tooth is exerted.
As for the paw thing...Is this an OUTDOOR cat?? If so, she MAY have
gotten the same thing my Yellow Labrador Retriever did....a Bee sting!!
Brandy started limping around a month or so back, and we couldn't find
any reason why. She did this for about 2 days, and then no sign of the
limp. Our lawn has a lot of clover in it, and honeybees LOVE clover.
DOgs and cats can simply step on a honeybee by accident and get a good
sting on their pads....which causes a limp for about 2 days...

RE: .0
My cat Bandit has an abcess on one of his paw pads. He was limping
quite a bit for two days so I brought him to the vet. While in
the examination room waiting for the vet, the abcess burst and
liquid and blood came out. The vet suggested that perhaps T.K.'s
tooth pierced the paw pad while they were rough-housing.
Probably not a problem. In fact, I wouldn't waste the $$ on
the vet visit unless the paw becomes infected.

Bee Sting......now that's a possibility.....
re: .8
How big was the burst abscess? My vet also suggested waiting it
out until she gave more of an indication as to what it could be
(unless she stopped eating).
And now a work from Nippa herself....
My Dear Dignified Felines:
It is without remorse that I give up my seat in the bridge club,
as I find myself attracted to the *wilder* side of life and pizza!
However, I do hope to see you all at the riding lessons.

| Re: Cookie
You might wnat to ask the vet about a root canal instead of removing
the tooth. My vet said that when the biggie fang teeth are removed,
the cat often has a tendency to accidentally bite his lip after that,
resulting in a permanent sort of sore, and that leaving the root canaled
stump in place prevents this. Maybe you want a redferral to a vet who
specializes in dentistry.
My sweetie had a root canal a few years ago and he hasn't had any
problems with that tooth since then.

| Re .11
I think she's already past that point... Seems like she's exhibiting
signs of that 'permanent sore'. The tooth she lost is gone right to the
gum-line, and she does sometimes catch the lower (stomach tooth?) on
her upper lip when she eats.... Poor little girl...she's such a little
sweetie... I woke up last night about three and she's sleeping next to
our biggest dog, with her little head resting right on his cheek...but
Teddy loves her too, so no worry. Cookie likes to wash his face and he
sits there and eats it up... Mortal enemies?? Ridiculous!!

| Maybe they can do something about the sore if it persists (do cats
get caps.... but she would need the base of the tooth still there
to put a cap in, I think.)
