| I don't know where you are from, but in Dallas the local grocery stores
have some carriers. I would look at Petco or a pet store nearby. I
would think that they would have something.
As to calming down your feline, bring a toy and/or blanket to make him
feel better. And don't feed him right before you board. (wouldn't that
be fun if he got nervous) Just give him some water.

3926.2 | At a Cat Show! | TELALL::GERRY | Home is where the Cat is | Tue Aug 21 1990 10:37 | 15 |
| Hi Cindy,
The best and least expensive place to get a cat carrier would be at a
cat show. There are several different styles that fit under the seat.
Or you could order one from Haddleigh House one of the Cat Show Vendors
directly, and Martha will send it to you....but with the cost of
shipping it you'll probably end up with the same price.
Where are you located??? I can give you an idea of where and when the
next local show is.
Oh yeah....the 800 # for Haddleigh House is 800-752-7670

3926.6 | Thoughts of traveling with a cat | WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JO | set home/cat_max=infinity | Tue Aug 21 1990 14:22 | 11 |
| I use the smallest size of Kennel Cab, the blue ones, for under
the seat travel. It gives the cat more room than those Town and
Country or VariKennel ones.
American, United, TWA are a few of the airlines that allow cats
on board (under the seat). Delta will not allow them under the
seat, only in the cargo. Don't know about the other airlines. I
have frequent flyer with United and American so usually use them.
American is the most accomodating with the cats. United the least.

| Cindy,
Usually the noise of the aircraft will drown out any noise that
your cat may make, unless your cat is siamese! :^)
Really, don't worry. When I was showing and traveling with Limoges,
the only time I heard from her was when dinner was served to the
passengers. She couldn't understand why they weren't bringing her
a tray, afterall, she had paid for her ticket too!
Hmmmm, maybe this is a good case for the west coast branch of Pussycat,

Cindy,
Bailey flew with me in January and he was fine. I was neurotic,
he was fine. The only other point that I would keep in mind is
how cold the the floor under the seat can get, and also, if you
have a window seat, the side of the plane. Cin had put Bailey in
a little round bed so he was nice and cozy. Just to make myself
feel better, I put a wool blanket under the carrier, and up the
side that was leaning against the wall. I was lucky that I didn't
have anyone next to me, so after the flight attendents strapped
themselves in for the landing, I brought him up to the seat next
to me so he wouldn't feel the impact on landing.

| Cin,
re: .12
We just got back from our first trip to Phoenix...sorry I did not
respond sooner.
Do you use the acepromezine often? I do not know enough to know if i
want to use it...I am afraid of side effect. Have you ever seen any
cats have a bad reaction to the drug? If not, I think it would be a
good idea. Mow is very nervous in the car...I cannot imagine how she
will react to the tensions of the moving day!
Thxs again for all the info and help!

| I've never had a cat have a side effect from the Ace, but, I don't use
it alot. I have one cat that it doesn't even seem to mellow her out,
so who knows! I don't think it will hurt her, just make her a little
sleepy.

| Payday had a very bad reaction to Acepromazine a couple of years
ago. She went into respiratory failure and we thought we were going
to lose her. I think this was just an isolated incident though,
because Payday is very sensitive to any drug. Can you give smaller
doses to find out what kind of reaction you'll get?

3926.18 | | WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JO | set home/cat_max=infinity | Mon Sep 10 1990 19:10 | 17 |
| You can practice with the Ace. In fact, most vets recommend that
you try it out before you have to use it. That way you can get
a better idea of what type of dose to give, and what the reaction
might be.
I used Ace on Kyrielle once for a show. I won't ever use it again.
At home, in practice, we gave her 1/2 tablet and she seemed to just
get a little sleepy. The vet had warned that during periods of
stress, a smaller dose would probably have a greater affect. At the
airport, in the parking lot, I gave her 1/4 tablet. By the time
we got to the ticket counter, she was out of it. Her third eyelids
were completely up and she was moaning and groaning. I felt horrible.
She did stay completely still and quiet for the whole flight, but
it wasn't worth the guilt that I felt. From then on I have never
Ace'd another cat for traveling, and I have traveled plenty.

doseages, and I've never had a cat get more than sleepy from ACE, and
that's after a good hour or two!

| Cin,
I can't remember the dosage. I still have the other 1/4 of that
one tablet, plus the other tablet the vet gave me, and it has been
about 3 years now!! Never had a need for it again. Poor Kyrielle
looked so bad. Like she had just gone on a drinking binge that
had lasted several days and she was suffering from the worst possible
hangover. To boot, I had to worry about whether or not it would
wear off by the show the next morning. Practically had to pour her
out of the carrier when we got to the hotel.
She was better by morning, but still groggy.
