3911.0. "Madison the wanderer" by WECARE::GERMANN () Thu Aug 16 1990 13:52
Sometimes it seems to me that we hear an awful lot about the bad people
out there and how they treat animals, or about the sad things that
happen to us and our animals. So, I wanted to share a happy story.
In note 3818, I advertised a kitten that arrived at my house. Well, we
still have her. With the help of a fellow noter, she has been spayed
and is charming all who come in contact with her, with the exception of
my other cats.
And thus the basis for the happy story.....
Last Tuesday Madison wouldn't come in at night when I called everyone
in. She just looked up at me and walked away. Well, I was very tired
and figured that she had stayed outside before I knew her health status
so she would be okay. Wednesday I didn't see her and by Thursday
evening I was really getting worried. Well, that evening, I was
sitting on my front porch talking with someone when a car pulled up in
front and a young man asked if I was missing a cat! I described
Madison, including her recent spay, and he said that that was the one.
Turns out that Madison has followed his wife and him home Tuesday night
when they had taken a late walk. So off he went and brought her back,
complete with food and litter. In addition, he told me that there
would be a "found" ad in the paper in the morning. Well, I felt so
good about finding Madison and about the people being so nice and
caring that I was just as happy as could be.
So, Madison stuck around for Friday but on Saturday she disappeared
again. Now I was getting worried. However, Tuesday when I got home
there she was curled up on her favorite chair. Yesterday I found out
what had happened and that there are all sorts of good and caring
people in this world.
Turns out that Madison wound herself up at the small catholic college
that is around the corner from my house. Tuesday when the continuing
Education folks arrived, they found this wonderful kitty outside their
door. They took her in (or more precisely, she invited herself in)
and, noticing her stitches, decided to call the local vets. They found
my vet who remembered Madison and gave them my number!!!
How do I know all this? Well, yesterday I left early. When I got
home, the phone rang and it was the folks from that office. Turns out
that Madison was right back there climbing from desk to desk and
generally making herself welcome. While they all enjoyed her, they did
have to go home for the day!!! Apparently, Madison had snuck out of
the house when I left for work and high-tailed it right over to the
college. The way the story was told to me, she put up quite a ruckus
outside the building during the morning mass. The secretary I talked
with said that, as she looked around, she could see all the nuns trying
to suppress the grins on their faces. Right after mass, Madison was
allowed in (she has a TREMENDOUS voice for one so small) and everyone
made a fuss.....
Well, the other good that comes from all this is that it appears she
has won the heart of more than one person there and I will soon have a
home for my little waif - or should I say, she found herself a home?!?!

| Madison sounds like a charming, gregarious kitty. May I suggest that
she be given a collar and tag with either your or her new owners
number. It sounds like she might continue her socializing. When in
her new home, I'll bet she'll attempt to call on you!

I guess Madison, like all cats has a real mind of her own!!
And decided to use it. She may always be a visiting kitty, so keep a
few treats on hand when she decides to move out. She may be back for
tea!
Feline happy for you and Madison

| I've often thought that cats own people & not the other way around!
Madison sounds a terrific personality. I could just visualise the
situation you described - it really cheered me up imagining those
nuns faces! Isn't it great how animals bring love into peoples
lives.
I'm sure lots of outdoor cats have more than one home. I know
mine are welcome in several nearby houses having charmed the
neighbours.
I once knew a cat that used to visit people apparently hoping
to get fed. He was enormous! He wouldn't let you pet him, though
but he kept trying to steal my cats food. I probably would have taken
pity on him & given him food if he hadn't been so big and had a collar
round his neck with a tag on. Eventually I caught him for long enough
to read the tag - I was hoping to find out who owned him. There
was no name & address however only the words "please do not feed me
- I'm on a special diet"!!!! I never did find out where he came from.
Best wishes to Madison
