I am contemplating giving a good friend of mine, who
is an avid cat lover a book about cats. Either a book
with helpful and informative information about her ,--789
cats.Or a book in which the story is about a cat or
cats. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you

I would recommend the Cornell Book of Cats. It is one of the best
books that I have seen. Covers everything you can think of about
cats, including a very extensive medical section. I have been
collecting cat books for years, and this is one of my favorites.
It is also copyrighted in 1989, so the info is very current. That
is helpful in the case of some cat illnesses.

Yeah! A cat loving Aunt of mine recently sent me the Cornell Book of
Cats. It's wonderful! Covers the different breeds as well as the
medical text, and it is very easy to understand. There is a glossary
in the back too, for the medical terms and illnesses.
I also like "The Ultimate Book of the Cat" by David Taylor. The
pictures in this book are gorgeous, and so are the cats. It mostly
covers the different breeds and a section about breeding and showing,
but there is other useful information in there as well.
For humor, I highly recommend "Catmopolitan", a take-off on
Cosmopolitan. This is a magazine style book, and it is hilarious! I
laughed for hours reading it. The pages are similar to cardstock; it
is really tastefully done.
Happy reading!!

Helpful hint -
if you extract this note, and edit out everything but the following
command procedure, you'll have a program which will grab FELINE's
directory. You can submit/noprint that program once a week, and you'll
have a fast way to locate things in FELINE. The command SEARCH
FELINE_DIR.OUT "topic" (once you've run this program) will locate
the "topic" in the FELINE directory-file.

There is a new book out on the market for cattery owners, multicat
households and animal professionals. It is called Feline Husbandry and
it was written by Nels Pederson, DVM from UC Davis.
Actually, having read the book, I would have to say that the book is
compiled by Nels Pederson, or edited by him. :^) His name is on the
cover, but the chapters inside are written by different specialists
from around the country.
The chapter on breeds was written by Joan Wastlhuber, CFA Allbreed
Judge and President of the Robert H. Winn Foundation. This chapter
covers not only breeds recognized by CFA, but breeds recognized in
other associations, and some breeds that haven't been accepted yet.
The index shows chapters on breeds, genetics, viral illnesses,
parasites, pregnancy and lactation, cattery design and maintenance, and
many, many other topics. This book is not for the average pet owner.
It is very detailed, and not for the faint at heart. It includes some
very graphic pictures of cats who have different ailments, and it also
has some graphic pictures of various internal organs. The language
used can border on the type you would need a vet to translate in some
chapters, but most is easily understood. In the illnesses chapters,
the diseases are broken down into catagories, and then each disease is
analyzed by mode of transmission, diagnostic methods, treatments,
histopathalogical findings, course of the illness, and public health
implications.
This book covers topics that are crucial to situations where you have a
large number of cats all living together. It covers mainly the
diseases that you would find in multiple cat situations, like FIP,
Felv, FIV, Upper Respiratory Infections, Fungus, etc.
It also has a chapter that gives some ideas for how to set up a
cattery, and has complete diagrams and floor plans for doing so. There
are pictures of actual cattery set ups, including Joan Wastlhuber's
cattery, and the cattery of Jim Rambo, a Persian breeder living in GA.
The book was previously only available through mail order from
California Veterinary Publications in southern California, but this
months CFA Alamanac states that they will be distributing the book
through the central office. The cost is also a bit less through CFA,
$39 plus $2 for postage and handling.
The new address for CFA is:
Cat Fanciers Association, Inc.
1805 Atlantic Avenue
P.O. Box 1005
Manasquan, NJ 08736-1005
