Poor Ross...Ross is my sisters kitty and this cat hates to fight,,, but it seems like all the cats love to pick on him. This is the kitty that actually poops when another cat attacks him. Well last night my Barkley (bad boy) chased poor Ross up on the second floor porch and started to fight...I'm not sure if Ross jumped her fell...but he ended up falling down to the ground on cement. The amazing part is that he very gently landed on his feet and took off running. We found him up a tree scared to death, but it does not appear that he is hurt in anyway. Well we coaxed him down from the tree and brought him in and gave him some fresh roast beef. How can cats land on their feet and not get hurt? We are keeping a close eye on him to make sure he didn't get hurt, but is there anything in particular that I should be looking for? He seemed fine this morning. Sandy (Tamba, Poco, and Barkley who's on mom's *&^% list)

Sandy, cats are very agile and have a wonderful sense of balance, as you have found out. When Kelsey was about 8 or 9 months old, Dana was washing the upstairs windows and Kelsey was "helping." Outside of the window is a ledge that slopes downward towards the driveway. I am not good at estimating distance but it was quite a jump from the edge of that roof to the driveway. I'm sure you know what comes next... Dana opens screen, tries to block Kelsey from escaping, plan fails, and Kelsey goes running out the window to the edge of the roof, looks down at the driveway and takes a flying leap to the cement!! It's a good thing I wasn' home to witness it; I found out about it after the fact. Kelsey was fine. He landed on all fours, and when Dana came out the front door to retrieve him Kelsey was just standing there all proud of himself! Cats are truely amazing, aren't they?!

Ross still appears to be okay, but he is a little hesitant in going back out. Course Barkley hangs around the house keeping strays away,,,,but I keep telling him that Ross belongs here and is part of our family. He just won't listen. Course Barkley was a stray himself...so he's very grateful in finding a home...so he guards it well. Cat are truly amazing...I have owned one (or more) for just about my whole life...and they still teach me things. Sandy (Tamba, Poco, and Barkley)
3904.3 | They use their tails | BRUMMY::KIRBY | Thu Aug 16 1990 09:27 | 16
I had a friend who's cat jumped out of a bedroom window once and escaped unscathed. My Pip did the same but landed on a garden shed - so it was not so far. Apparently cats balance using their tails and when they jump or fall they move them in a sort of circular movement to keep themselves upright so that they land safely on all four paws. I saw this in slow motion once on television - it is amazing. You can't really appreciate how much the tail moves in normal circumstances because it all happens so quickly. Wish I was half as agile! Cat's don't always land on their feet, and they can be hurt during a fall. The Animal Medical Clinic in New York calls this High Rise Syndrome. Some cats do survive falls from great heights, but a large number receive fatal injuries. Jo |
