My two small kittens have caught fleas. Nothing surprising about that, you may think - cats and fleas go together like ducks and water. The thing is, we can't understand how they managed to catch them - we live in a second floor flat (temporarily) and they haven't been out - they're too young. So - no contact with any other feline and both clean as whistles when we got them. They are the first feline occupiers of the flat. Any ideas??? We are at a loss!

You may have brought them in on your person. Or (this is my favorite theory) They may have just been produced by spontaneous generation! Jo

people who have never had pets can suffer flea infestation. They move in waves across the landscape. Treat the home (with cats removed to vet for flea removal) and you may beat them before they become entrenched. My recommendation: use spray on carpets, along baseboards, etc. forget the flea bombs - they aren't effective and they are expensive. get recommendations from your vet for brand of spray. let vet clear fleas from kittens - safer unless you are Jo or someone who really knows how to treat kittens (not me obviously)

When I lived in Floriday I didn't have any pets except for feas. My appartment was always sprayed monthly for other pests but the fleas stayed. The only thing that got rid of them (and still does now that I have 8 furballs around the house) is vacuuming twice a day and wet vac every few weeks. My vet was handed a cat just week to be put to sleep, the owner was troubled that their youngster came down with an infected flea bite and couldn't be convinced that they could keep the cat if some preventitive measures were taken (the cat is now up for adoption by the vet instead). They'll be surprised when the fleas remain! |
