3833.0. "Please Help,Very sick Kiwi" by CIMNET::CAFE () Thu Jul 26 1990 14:21

    Hi Cat Lovers,
Unfortunately I had a bad experience with my 1yr. old grey tiger
cat named "KIWI" over the weekend.
Kiwi is strictly an indoor cat and only goes out during the day
on a leash once a week and is always watched.Early Sunday morning,
between 2:30am.+7:00am.he escaped through a screen in my living room
on the second floor, jumped on the landing over my front door on
the first floor, then to the ground.
I awakened to a strange cat crying at my back door;when I opened the
door ,it was KIWI.He was foaming at the mouth(which I had learned
    later,was a reaction to vomiting).He continued to vomit,have
diarreah ,foam, and let out cries.I know it sounds sad but he
was the sickest animal I had ever seen.
I rushed him to the only vet available on a sunday(Acton emergency
animal care). They took his temperature;it was normal. They took
x-rays;found nothing. They said his intestines were contracted
and swollen and said he would have to spend the night.
They called at 6:00pm.that night and said he had vomitted blood
and they would have to do a barium series;found nothing.
I picked him up the next morning and refered him to my regular vet.
They took some tests and kept him both Monday and Tuesday night.
He's alright now but I'm just going crazy trying to figure out
what happened that awful night.I spent alot of money on him
and noone can seem to tell me what actually happened.
My regular vet hinted at a possible rat poisoning.Either ate food
with rat poison in it or ate a poisoned rat.
Kiwi has been through so much and I felt so bad for him,I just
wish someone coul tell me what happened.Has anyone else had
    this experience?
                                                  Rick

Rick, I have never had that experience, but it does sound like a
possible poisoning case to me too. How awful for you and KIWI! I am
    glad he is better now.

I had a similar experience with a beagle years ago, he attempted
to eat a toad. Toads excrete a slimy substance when frightened that
encourages the attacker to drop them. My dog had quite a reaction
though it wasn't as long as your cats. He got a foamy mouth, thru
up and acted paralysed for a day, then he was fine. He only had the
toad for a minute before we caught him. The reaction started
    immediately.

3833.3Could also have been Anti-freeze (coolant).MCIS5::MCDONOUGHThu Jul 26 1990 16:4011
It also could have been anti-freeze!! This time of year, and in the
winter as well, cars have a tendency to overheat and spill coolant in
parking lots and along roadsides. This anti-freeze is alleged to be
extremely sweet-tasting (I haven't tasted it!!) but it's VERY toxic.
Unfortunately, cats and dogs don't know it's toxic, and they like to
lick it from where it's been spilled...the symptoms sound very similar
to what I've read on this poison.

The GOOD news is that Kiwi is now doing better. If they get through
the first few days they're usually "home free"...

It definately sounds like poisoning, is it possible someone could
have pulled him out of the screen? How about the height of his jumps,
could he have injured himself getting down? Could you find any of his
"accidents", maybe analyzing that would be helpful, even if it's dried
up now. Maybe there would be evidence of plant material, or other
    toxic substance in it.

                       I hope he's ok! Denise

Just wanted to add, save his urine, poop samples, if the vet didn't
already, maybe they can analyze those too, for toxic substances.

Sounds like poisoning to me too. I'm glad he survived.
regarding Antifreeze, I've read that its so toxic that one
tablespoon is sufficient to kill a cat.

If it was antifreeze, wouldn't the vet be able to detect toxins in the
    blood?

    Hi,
I would like to thank everyone for their concern over Kiwi.
He is back to normal ;thank God.
In a reply to .4,no one could have pulled him out of the
screen because I am on the second floor. The screen just gave
way but I have secured them now.
Yes I did suggest to the vet that their may have been some internal
injuries but examinations and x-rays showed nothing of the kind.
I would assume that the vet analysed the poop and vomit because
he did both right in the examining room.
Just for the record I thought some of you might like to know
    why I named Kiwi,Kiwi.
Ya know when you cut open a kiwi fruit how it's white in the
middle and black lines spray out like a star, well Kiwi has
a diamond shaped white marking smack dab in the middle of
his nose and black stripes spraying out from his eyes to
his fluffy mane, thus the name Kiwi.
Again thanks to everyone for your concern. Rick
3833.9Cat's magazine helps..WILKIE::IVESFri Jul 27 1990 13:1115
I got my new Cats magazine last night and so read it from cover to
cover before went to sleep. One of the things they bought out was
cats are being poisioned from the lawns etc being sprayed. The symptoms
are exactly what your cat had.

The article went on to say, if you or any neighbors have lawn service
come DO NOT LET YOUR CATS OUT WHILE IT'S WET AND WHEN DRY WAIT ANOTHER
    HOUR.

I would be glad to share this article with anyone if you would like.

"Cover" cat was a (not ever going to spell it right) Chartruse.
Beautiful cats. Does any feliner have one?

3833.10 Hello F.A.O Schwartz.. one kitty car ,, please..AIMHI::MCCURDYFri Jul 27 1990 13:5313
I have to agree with .9.. HRH was "visiting her personal Physician"
yesterday.. and when I went pay the bill..( HRH did not have her
"purse" with her ..:*).. they had a " warning" on this same
subject.. and the symptoms were also the same ones you
    described...
Barbara,, did you see the picture of Bonny Prince Charles
the persian, sitting on the battery operated car, his kitty parents
had bought him.. I am hoping that HRH does not "notice" it. as
she is "pawing thru", circling "things" she wants me to send
away for.. Thank Heavens today is Friday,, she is has a luncheon
engagement at 1 ,, and then Bridge at 2.. I really did like that
    car though..

3833.12No Chemicals on MY "Meadow"!!!MCIS5::MCDONOUGHFri Jul 27 1990 14:3821
    re.6/.7
Antifreeze can really be nasty stuff. A lady I work with has a cat
that she almost lost to the stuff...he was REAL sick. I think the
quantity is about right, but the chance of a cat getting that much is
not too good... What they usually get is a residue that's diluted in
the water from a ratiator, so they'd have to drink quite a bit to kill
them, but it's not uncommon to have themdo that also...

Re lawn chemicals...Good ol' "Chemlawn"!!(and others equally as
dangerous!!) The advertize thsi stuff as "safe", and then put up
warning signs every time they apply it...never could figure that out!!
Guess I'll keep my "meadow" with it's dandelions, weeds, wild flowers,
and such....it still looks pretty good when it's mowed, and I don't
have to worry about my neighbor's two Siamese nor the multitude of
Robins who take earthworms from it, nor the half-dozen Chipmunks that
live UNDER it... Hey...it even looks sort of neat when it gets long and
the wildflowers start to bloom!! Sorry "Chemlawn"-and competitors--NOT
    INTERESTED!!

I saw something in the paper a week or so ago about the government
landing on the companies that spray stuff on lawns. The gist of it was
that the claims the companies make for safety are bogus (what else is
    new).

Actually, she knows how buzy you are and decided to save you the effort
of ordering those items by contracting the work to a particular law
firm that I think you have heard of. All you are expected to do is pay
    for them.

re Lawn Services - I wonder if the dry fertilizers/weeders are as
dangerous. They are applied in a pellet form that "melts" into the
ground when wet rather than as a liquid spray that is applied to the
    grass.

I used SCott plus II once and I think they mentioned it should be well washed
in before kids and pets are allowed to play on the lawn. Knowing how the
manufacturers down-play toxicity, I would be extremely cautious....and
suspicious if an animal began to display toxicity symptoms.

re: antifreeze/coolant toxicity...this stuff destroys the liver and the
odds are that if this was the poison, the animal would suffer permanent
damage/impairment. If the animal "recovers" from the affliction, it is
most likely NOT antifreeze/coolant poisoning.
