| While we are on the subject of hotels...I am having a h*ll of a
time trying to find a hotel to take exhibitors for our show in January.
So far, only two will take them, the Radisson (for $88 a night)
or the Holiday Inn (for $79 a night). These rates are sky high
in my opinion. I asked the Holiday in for the great rate, and was
told that it went up to $79. The very next weekend, after I was
told that, I got a room in Ventura at the Holiday Inn there for
$59 (great rate) for that show. So, what gives?? Is the great
rate a regional deal or what? Any ideas about how to convince hotel
managers that the exhibitors won't wreck their rooms?? I hate to
lie to the hotel managers and tell them that the cats will all be
caged during their stay, but it is starting to look like that is
what we might have to do. Out of towners can't afford $79 a night
for two or three nights!

| Well, I had to beg and plead when I was booking the Ramada. I still
didn't get the lowest rate (weekend special) - we had to alert the
exhibitors in the hall that Saturday to ask for xxx before checking
in andl ask when checking out Sunday morning. The group rates are
sometimes not as good as the weekend special rates. I think that
the best I could do at the Ramada was either $69 or $79. I thought
that was AWFUL. Later on is when I discovered that they had a weekend
special and we announced that at the show! I was peeved cause I had
also set up a buffet right at the hotel - they really did ok from
us that year - I booked at least 40 or more rooms and all were used
with overflow to other area hotels! sigh
I offered (as incentive) to have the exhibitors leave a deposit
on the room - folks will keep their cats in check if it means $$$$$$$.
Sometimes one exhibitor can really mess things up for all the rest.
I'm sure you have your own hotel horror stories!
The deal with the Holdiay/Soap is that you cannot use it along
with any other special or group rates. So, that means we will
have to pay for one night at regular price, and THEN get one
night free. I think (I haven't checked to see just yet what
their regular one night price is ) that it will still be cheaper
than paying two nights at the Great Rate price of $59.00 - plus tax
of course!
Some Holiday Inns participate - some don't - some do at certain times
of the year - if the Inns know that they have slow times, they will
offer the discounts.

| Also, the Holiday Inn Great Rates are different prices from city to
city. When we were staying in NYC, the Great Rate was $89, but in
Albany NY, it was $39.
Elaine, did you make our reservations under the Great Weekend Get Away?
I got my Ivory Soap last night, so I'll be clean! ;-)

| Nope, just made them for the Great Rate. I just found out that
this Holiday Inn may not be participating in the Soap discount!
I did stock up on Coast though. Maybe we can bargin with them
when we arrive. Threaten to dump a used box of kitty litter on
their desk if they don't give us the 'soap' deal.

I was looking at the latest Cats mag (july) just saw a small box add
on page 23 PETS ALLOWED Directory of places to stay nationwide.
Includes a facility description - $5.00.
Pets Allowed
9 Greenmeadow Drive # FM
North Billerica, MA 01862-1921
Might be worth $5.00 to check this out - it could be hand if the show
hotel is more expensive than you might want to shell out that weekend.
It might offer alternatives !

| I feel like adding a quick note to this, just FYI stuff. I have a
girlfriend who travels extensively following Blue Grass shows. She has
related to me many times of horror stories of finding hotels that
accept feline (or canine) friends. The bottom line is her best
experiences have been with the local, non chain type hotels, even
roadside motels. She too have several, but well behaved former strays,
but no major hotel is going to accept what could be a potential for
damaged rooms. Just a quick note, I stongly advise the obvious, which
is to cage the animals when you leave, maids seem to love leaving the
room door open and the kids might stray.
As quick follow up, my friend and her husband now own a rather large
motor home. They became frustrated at finding hotels while traveling,
and also lost one who was deaf in the Stow area a few years ago, when
it escaped from the camp tent at a blue grass festival through a broken
zipper on the door.

| The local, non-chain hotels are great if you know where you are
going and are familiar with the area. I haven't found it to work
for me when traveling with my cats. I have found that the best
way to find a room is to go to a chain hotel, pick up their catalog
of hotels across the country and then use that as a guide for next
time.
When you are selecting a show hotel for a large show, you have to
use one of the larger chains. First of all, you need to have a
place that has enough rooms to accomodate all those folks with their
cats. Second, you need a place that is nice, to impress your judges
with how well you are taking care of them (so that they will want
to come judge your show again another year). And Third, you need
a hotel that has a nice restaurant attached, both for your exhibitors
and so that you can have a nice judges dinner.
As an aside, the Holiday Inn told me that the best that they could
do was $79 a night, and then at a cat club meeting, I learned that
they have given a $59 rate to another club! I must not be a very
good negotiator. :^( I plan to call them back and ask them about
this before signing a contract.
