3826.1 | WHY DON'T PEOPLE SPAY/NEUTER PETS?! | WLDWST::K_GARRISON | Vox populi | Wed Jul 25 1990 15:38 | 22 |
| I can empathize with your feelings on the kill policy. Last week my
landlords trapped and delivered a feral mother cat and two of her
kittens to the Humane Society. They could not be placed for adoption
as they hadn't been socialized and couldn't be handled easily. They
held them for 72 hours nonetheless. What a frightening way to spend
the last hours.
BUT, there is some good news to this. I smuggled the remaining two
kittens into my apartment, have tamed them, and have taken them to the
vets for check up, shots and baths. They're fat, sassy, and have two
prospective permanent homes as well an offer for a foster home.
I hope that you do well with your garage sale! I have been asking
friends for their reusables here in California as well. The items will
be donated to ACA which funds animal birth control -- a big problem
here. They pay the cost of spay/neuter as well as try to enlighten the
neighborhoods as to the need for this. They will fund the trapping and
spay/neuter of ferals as well.
Keep up the good work!

FLAME ON:
Or, EVEN ASSUMING THAT PEOPLE WISH TO HAVE INDOOR-OUTDOOR CATS, why don't
they keep their KITTENS INDOORS UNTIL THEY ARE OLD ENOUGH TO BE NEUTERED OR
SPAYED? Those "oh oh, she seems to have gotten pregnant before I got a
chance to get her spayed" litters are PRIMARY contributors to the cat
over-population problem...and a very big reason why so many cats are
killed at shelters. And those male kittens that "aren't old enough yet"
to be neutered are out there getting cats pregnant. It is
just too difficult to predict when a cat will become capable of
reproducing to allow kittens freedom before they are safely "fixed".
Even BREEDERS can't always tell....as Jo can attest.
I wish all who try and cope with this problem the best of luck...I'm
burned out trying to get strays neutered/spayed, shots, find them homes,
etc...I've spent in excess of $500.00 in the last 18 months and there
isn't even a dent in the local cat population.

| re: .0 - where do you work? I have some excellent items that you
can have including a pyrex-type cookware set (casserole dishes etc)
brand new, never been used. Is there some way I can get this
stuff to you before the sale? I'm at MR03 and live in Braintree.

3826.5 | ACA = Animal Birth Control Assistance | WLDWST::K_GARRISON | Vox populi | Mon Jul 30 1990 14:26 | 16 |
| In reply .2 you asked what ACA was. It is Animal Birth Control
Assistance, Inc. A non-profit group that is dedicated to the
curtailing of breeding of unwanted cats and dogs. They work with
competent vets and pay the part of hte spay/neuter fee the owner cannot
affford (~$15 for neuter, $25 for spay).
They raise money through flea markets and garage sales and will pick
up anything you have to donate; household goods, books, clothing, etc.
All tax deductible.
I'm not sure how much information of such is allowed in this
conference, if I can give phone numbers of ACA, etc. I suggest anyone
contact me through mail if they'd like more info.
