3805.0. "Kitty Pressies from the States?" by BREW11::KIRBY () Wed Jul 18 1990 09:48

    I am visiting the States soon for the first time(!!).

    I like to buy my boys a present when I go away & wondered if there was
    anything special I should look out for that I can't get in the UK.

    I thought it might be fun to ask you all for suggestions.
    Any good ideas? All daft ideas accepted.

    Awaiting replies with interest.

I think that no trip to the States would be complete without a couple of
Dr. Daniels catnip mice for the kids back home! You can find them at
just about any good pet shop. They're about $2.00 each and are sure to please!

3805.2When are you coming to the States?NATASH::ANDERSONWed Jul 18 1990 14:1414
    Rosemary,

    When are you coming to the States - and when?

    The reason I am asking is because we are having a Feliners party
    in Littleton, Massachusetts on August 2nd - would love to have you join
    us - if you will be in the area.

    Marilyn, Otis, Tiffany & Sam

    P.S. A gift suggestion for your boys would be some catnip - or
          treats 'Pounce' etc. - but perhaps they can't be brought
          back INTO your country!

    or - one of Cindy's sparklers. You sure can't get those in the
    UK.

3805.4"Imported" cat treatsXANADU::CHRISTOPHERThu Jul 19 1990 11:5012
You should be able to bring canned/packaged food into the UK, so I
second the previous suggestion: find some kitty treats that aren't
available in the UK! (We once brought some French cat food back for
our cats...)

Your only problem will be if they get addicted to "foreign food" and
you don't have a steady supply of it! My cats love "Whisker Lickins"
cat treats (the salmon, dairy and chicken flavor, but not the beef flavor).
They come in small packages -- easy to pack for the trip home.

- Debbie.

    We have friends who went to England on their honeymoon and brought
    back some canned catfood for my gang so you should be able to go
    the other direction too.

    Scout out the pet supply stores and grocery stores for
    "Toys" & "Treats" you can't get in the UK!

3805.7But, truely, Inspector, it's for the moggies!!TPMARY::TAMIRACMS design while-u-waitThu Jul 19 1990 13:5718
BTW, I have a couple interesting stories about getting things through customs...

I once brought some Dr. Daniels mice to some friends in Austria...the local,
not-so-friendly German Shepard Dog that was there to sniff out things that
might be of interest to him sniffed those mice clear across the room. The
much nicer inspectors, after checking out the mice, told me that next time
I should bring one for the dog! I've never seen those pooches at Heathrow,
however.

And a funnier story...some months ago, poor Chauncey was shut into the spare
room, where I store my luggage (Jan, this was the night you picked up Scooter!).
Well, Chauncey had to pee and choose to do so on my garment bag. I scrubbed
it clean, or so I thought... At JFK, after returning from Japan, the U.S.
Dept. of Agriculture Beagle Brigade made the rounds of peoples luggage, and
wouldn't you know that that damn little beagle heads right for where Chauncey
had peed. You should have seen me explaining that one!!

3805.8I think I'll bring a spare suitcaseBREW11::KIRBYFri Jul 20 1990 08:1119
    Thanks for all the suggestions folks. I have a feel I'll be coming home
    with quite a full suitcase!

    What is/are Cindys sparklers? They sound like edible fireworks!!

    I loved the customs story. I can just see that happening to me when I
    get off the plane at Heathrow at 5.25 am! I'll let you know if anything
    like that happens when I get back.

    Thanks for the invitation to the party Marilyn. That would have been
    great but unfortunately although I think I will be in your area (my
    geography knowledge is not all it might be!) it won't be quite at the
    right time. Hope the party goes well though, look forward to reading
    about it.

    I'll let you know what I finally buy & what the boys think when I get
    home.

3805.9Sparklers...ICS::GERRYHome is where the Cat isFri Jul 20 1990 12:0712
    I make kitty "Sparklers". They're a wand type of thing with shiney
    mylar ribbons attached to the end. The cats just go crazy over them.
    Here in the States, many of the judges use them in the cat shows to get
    a better look at the cats.

    Just let me know if you'ld like to bring some home. Maybe you'ld also
    like to visit my Exotic Shorthairs.

    Gee, you could bring one of those home....! ;-)

3805.10ICS::GERRYHome is where the Cat isFri Jul 20 1990 12:088
    BTW, I brought a "Sparkler" to a friend that has one of my kittens
    (well he's now a year old) yesterday. We actually had to stop playing
    with him with it he was panting so hard!

    He loved it!

3805.11can I buy one - long distance?FORTSC::WILDEAsk yourself..am I a happy cow?Fri Jul 20 1990 13:339
Okay, Cin, I NEED one of these for Sam "Yo, lardbutt" - he needs some
kitty aerobics! I'm not sure the vet will think we have a "solid"
cat this year - I suspect he's tipped over into the "Yeeks! What a
porker!" category....

How do I go about getting my hands on one as I am in Silly Cone Valley
and cannot make it to the cat shows back in your neck of the woods?

    re: .10 - That's a relief. Bob gets so involved chasing the silly
    things that he starts panting. I was mildly concerned for his health
    but it sounds perfectly normal to me.
      Nancy
3805.13UPS, here we come!ICS::GERRYHome is where the Cat isMon Jul 23 1990 10:144
    Anyone who wants to order "Sparklers" long distance, just send me mail.

3805.14Well I knew they couldn't be fireworks!BOOZER::KIRBYTue Jul 24 1990 10:3421
    Cindy,

    So now I know what "sparklers" are! I'd love some & I'm sure the cats
    would too.

    Pip who is overweight needs something to make him run about a bit -
    he's so lazy and Domino who chases everything from mice to pieces of
    paper, just loves toys.

    Only problem is - I don't know what I'm doing or where I'm staying
    exactly & when. I know that sounds pretty feeble, but its not me
    making the arrangements!

    Perhaps you wouldn't mind doing mail-order to the UK? If you mail me
    separately @BIO or let me know how to mail you, perhaps we can sort
    something out?

    Best wishes
