3804.0. "Kitty story with a happy ending" by JJLIET::JUDY (I got a new attitude) Tue Jul 17 1990 17:02

This was sent to me by a friend in Australia. I have no idea what
    paper is was from.

"The saga of the British lbakc cat which survived six weeks locked
inside an Adelaide-bound shipping container has ended happily.

The owner of the Mercedes Benz which shared the container with the
miracle moggy from Lond yesterday decided to give the feline stowaway
    a home.

Mr. Marla Skartvedt said she would take the female cat, named, of
course, Mercedes, to Darwin after it ends another 226 days in
    quarantine.

A spokesperson for the South Australian Department of Agriculture
said the quarantine costs of $1623 would be met my Mrs. Skartvedt,
the SA Animal Welfare League, the manufacturers of a cat food,
and the company which owns the 'overloaded' shipping container.

There would also be a special "Mercedes Fund" for public donations.

"Any residuals will go to cat charities" she said.

Mercedes was reported to be healthy and happy at the Torrens Island
    quarantine center."

I was told the details of the story a while back but don't remember
them clearly. I think this poor creature was in the car for 6+
weeks or something like that. The car was being shipped from
    England to Australia by ship.

3804.2Other "lucky" cats....MCIS5::MCDONOUGHWed Jul 18 1990 09:4821
A fairly similar incident happened here in New England a few years
ago...seems a cat had gotten into a seaborne container and had her
kittens, and was shipped to the U.S... When they unpacked the
container in Boston, she was discovered..alive with two of the four
kittens still alive as well. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to sustain
enough bodyweight to provide sufficient milk for all four, so two had
perished on the journey. About 300 people stepped forward as volunteer
adopters for the trio of travelers...

Also, in the same vein, a cat was discovered in the landing gear well
of a B.O.A.C. jet that had landed at Logan Airport in Boston...she was
a little bit cold from the altitude and not in the best of spirits
(understandably) but in remarkably good shape for the ordeal she'd gone
through. Seems she must have climbed in the gear well at Heathrow and
got trapped...luckily in some spot where she wasn't crushed by the
landing gear when it retracted and it was also a lucky place since she
didn't fall out when the gear was lowered on the approach to Logan...

I'd sure rather be in a shipping container than on the landing gear
of a plane. Sheesh. I'm really surprised she didn't die of fright,
if nothing else.

Now that you mention it, they DID report that she had only 5 of her
    "9-lives" left....
