3796.0. "A cute little story for the day....." by BOOVX2::MANDILE () Mon Jul 16 1990 11:38
I thought everyone might enjoy this true story that
happened to my neighbor this summer. I stopped in to visit
her last week while on vacation, and she told me this story:
It's a lovely summer evening, and looking out the
window at your garden, you spy a momma chicken with her
9 (nine) newly hatched chicks. Seems momma had nested
in the grassy woods nearby, and was proudly showing off
her "brood". She beds them down in the woods, calling
to them and tucking them all under her wings.
It's now 6:00am the next morning. You hear "peep, peep"
at your back door. Puzzled, you go to the door, open it,
to find a lone chick, lost and confused. And then another,
peeping near the garage. Momma chicken and the other chicks
have vanished, except for a few feathers.
What do you do? You can't leave the "orphans" to fend for
themselves, so you bring them in, get the sturdy wire cage
out of the basement, put in food, water and now you are a
"momma chicken". But, alas! They become attached to you,
and peep constantly when left. In comes "surrogate mother",
a stuffed, floppy earred dog that takes over. They cuddle
up close, snuggling up under the floppy ears.
They grow so fast, it's now time to go outside. Unfortunately,
one gets attacked and killed by a dog. So "Chuckie" the chick
gets moved into the garage, where Momma cat has a litter of
five kittens. Momma cat becomes "Surrogate Mom #2!".
Momma cat takes over the "protection" and raising of "Chuckie".
"Chuckie" eats catfood, drinks milk, and tumbles with the kittens.
Chuckie becomes "a kitchicken" (a chickat?). Where ever they are,
Chuckie is. Mom cat, followed by 5 kittens, and bringing up the
rear, Chuckie the chicken!
Chuckie is still too young to tell if it's a he or she, but is
doing well, thanks to Momma cat's care.
(and of course, the kittens are free to good homes-I have entered
a note about them in the adoption section)

| My Grandparents got a picture in the local paper because their cat adopted
3 chicks along with her kittens.
Of course that was in the late '40s... and Tucson(Arizona) was just a little
cowboy town.
