3781.0. "FIP...A Death Sentence" by ROULET::MORRISSEY () Tue Jul 10 1990 00:03

<<< In Memory of Tomba >>>

I had hoped that when the time came to introduce my kids to this
conference that it would be a joyous occasion, my emotions are
mixed ...

For those that have suffered losses from FIP (Feline Infectious
Peritonitis), I can empathize with you, the feeling of helplessness...

The story begins but only two months back...

I had read in the adoptions note that there was a breeder who had
some blue_point siamese kittens that were available. I made the
appointment to see them that weekend. It was one of those first
really hot days in April, but with carrier_in_hand I made the trip
out to Greenfield to see them. Mind you I only meant to bring one
home with me, I keep telling myself that 8^) ...

The one that I was introduced to was a 3 month old male Blue_point,
He was and is beautiful. It didn't take much coaxing on His part
to convince me, He was later to be named ~Zachary~ ...

I noticed a slightly larger Blue_point kitten out in the sun room
sitting on top of a cat post enjoying the early spring warmth. I
inquired about this one to the breeder who told me that He was 4
months old and that she had serious doubts of ever placing Him because
He was born with a defective 3rd eyelid. I went over and spent
some time with Him, in which I found that He was even more friendly
and outgoing than Zachary. Well needless to say it was love at
first sight for all of them and a short time later We walked out
with two adorable little Blue_points. The second was to be named
~Tomba~ .

Once home the two were inseparable. They ate, slept and played together
conitinously. They would keep us amused for hours with their antics!!!
Although both adjusted well, Tomba seemed to associate with humans
better than Zachary. First in bed with us and first to wake us
up in the morning for breakfast, Tommy (as he was called sometimes)
was always nearby if I was home.

They were taken to the Doctors that first week to get caught up
on all the kitty shots and a thorough inspection from head to tail.
Both were fine except that Tommy showed signs of a slightly elevated
temperature and his stool sample was loose. His nature seemed well
at the time so the vet attributed it to maybe a change in diet or
environment. For the first month his appetite was good and he remained
fairly active....

It was the begining of the second month when we began to notice
slight irregularities with Tom. When the two stood side by side
one day we noticed that Zachary had caught up with Tommy's height
and Tom's stomach was more pronounced than Zach's. It was almost
in the 6th week that we noticed that Tommy wasn't finishing his
favorite `salmon' cat food dinners. We took his temperature and
found that it was still a little higher than normal for a cat. He
had become more docile in that sixth week, he didn't seem to want
to play with his sibling and was content to just snuggle in a warm
lap.

What happened from that point on seems like a nightmare....

The Vet was contacted and Tommy was brought in for evaluation. The
doctor wasn't sure at the time, but Tommy was showing classic signs
of FIPV. We had all the blood workups and extensive tests done
in hopes that just maybe the Vet could be mistaken in this case
and maybe whatever it was could be cured with an antibiotic or
something!!!

On the third day after the tests, our worst suspicions were to be
confirmed. Tom had tested VERY HIGHLY positive with active FIP
antibodies...He was dying!!!

The doctor explained that the early stages of the virus are near
impossible to detect and that specific tests were done that they
would not be conclusive that the virus would become active... A
disease that is little known, hard to detect, no known cure, and
considered fatal !!!

We were devistated ... The only thing the doctor could do was to
give us an antibiotic for his fever and maybe with one chance in
a thousand, maybe his body might fight the virus off...

Four days later I could see that his condition was becoming worse,
I knew he was hurting.
As I held him in my arms for over two hours today, I knew what had to be
done...

God may He rest in peace, and know that He was loved ...

We will miss you { Zachary (5mth/blue_point siamese)
Maui (2yr/seal_point siamese)
Tasha   (3yr/choc_point siamese) }

John~

3781.1Condolences with memories of another FIP victim -GaffeCSC32::W_AMESI don't KNOW where Tinkerbell is!Tue Jul 10 1990 05:1820
I can truly empathize. My first kitten, Gaffe, was about 3 or 4 months
old when we decided to put him to sleep because of FIP. The X-rays
that were taken looked awful!!

My step-mother worked for a vet and that is where we got him. He was
taken in because the people who had him didn't want him. He started
out like he had a cold and the people didn't want a kitten with a cold.

My oldest male cat (Dogger - my favorite) makes me wonder if The Gaffer
would have looked like him (Dogger) when he was a year old.
Unfortunately, no one will ever know.

Even as I type this, the tears are starting to well up in my eyes and
it's been almost 4 years. I guess you never get over something like
this.

My condolences and sympathies, I know what you are going thru.

3781.4Some info on FIP testingESIS::FEASEAndrea Midtmoen FeaseTue Jul 10 1990 09:1521
John,

My deepest sympathies. My cats, Bigfoot and Loki, both test high
positive for FIP (2000:1 to 4000:1), and we are very fearful that they
will develop the virus. It has been two years, though, since they
started testing positive and we've been lucky that they haven't
developed the symptoms yet.

In fact when I took them to Tufts for their annuals last week, the
vet said that she didn't want to test them for FIP. Seems that the
tests themselves are now very inconclusive; the tests that Tufts does
almost always come out positve, while the tests that are sent out on
exactly the same samples come out negative. She has a cat with a high
FIP titer too whom she used to test every month, but she has since
stopped testing her kitty until a better test comes out.

Again, I'm so sorry about Tom. As time passes, the memories of
the good times will become stronger.

- Andrea

My condolensces too. I also agree with Andrea about the titer tests.
They can be very inconclusive.

I have watched 3 friends of mine lose their beloved cats to FIP, and it
was just heartbreaking. Tomba knows how much you loved him; take
comfort in Zachary now. He will help you through this painful time.

Take care,
Roberta

I am very sorry about your loss. FIP is a horrible disease. It
is being studied though, and hopefully one day we will be blessed
with a worthy test for it, and maybe a vaccine. The Morris Animal
Foundation is currently funding a study on FIP, and for now, that
is where my donation dollars are going. FIP kills thousands of
cats each year. It is probably the second biggest killer of cats,
behind being hit by cars.

I agree that the titer test is not the best test for FIP. A cat
can have a titer that is considered positive, but not develop the
disease. By the same token, a cat can have a titer that is considered
negative, and still die of the disease. Some vets are starting
to try and treat FIP cats with steroids in an attempt to supress
the cat's immune system a bit, since it is thought that FIP develops
when the cat's immune system overreacts to the virus. It is thought
that the virus is present in the air, and that all cats are exposed
to it. The problem is finding out why some cats die and others
do not.

I have started doing full blood panels instead of running titer
tests on my cats. FIP cats will usually* have an elevated white
count, and an elevated blood protein level. They can also have
abnormal kidney or liver function values. To me, this information
is more valuable than the titer test.

Losing a cat to FIP is so painful because you feel so helpless.
With no good test, no vaccine, no treatment, and no cure, there
is not much that you can do but hold your baby in your arms and
comfort him. Let's hope that that changes soon.

*FIP can take many forms, and affect many different things, so you
really shouldn't make generalizations like I made here. :^)

So sorry to hear of your loss. I well know what you went through.
Last December I lost Lucky to FIP. In Luckys case he started with
FLV, then along came the FIP, from then on it was all downhill. It
is such an ordeal, a few good days and you get your hopes up, then
it gets worse, then the whole cycle starts over.
