| 3653.1 | It's good to get involved! | NATASH::ANDERSON |  | Wed May 30 1990 14:59 | 22 |
| | What a sad story. I assume you are talking about the big gray cat and
    the tiger cat...am I correct?

I am going to go home and talk to my daughter tonight and see if we
can't take one of them. I can't promise anything, but will do my best
and will let you know tomorrow.

I know you said that you will never again involve yourself in
something like this - but it's people like you who DO care and get
involved...that save lives and help defenseless animals (human beings
as well) live longer, healthier and happier lives.

Do not despair, I am sure this will all work out!

I will let you know in the morning if we can take one - or if
there is someone else to come to the rescue.

    You did the right thing!

    Marilyn, Otis and Tiffany

| | They will pay more to have those cats put to sleep then he would if he
dropped them off at a Humane Society and left a donation that is
usually required. You might want to tell him that!

| 3653.3 | THANKS | FRICK::AMCGOWAN |  | Wed May 30 1990 15:18 | 11 |
| | Thank you for answering my note, Marilyn. I am a real softy when it
comes to animals, especially cats. I know that it is wrong to give up
but I just get so frusterated with people who can be so cold and
uncaring. Yes, I am talking about the big gray and the orange tiger.
To make matters worse the owner gave me two pictures of them. They are
simply gorgeous!! I am going to hang the photos at the local animal
hospital as well as at the post office in my condo complex.

    Thanks again for answering.

Be careful that the money talk doesn't motivate the turkey to dump them

| | Exactly!! He already told me NO MONEY. In other words I am on my own.
He said that last night he was considering dumping them on the highway.
This guy is not kidding around. I almost told him that there would be
a charge to put them down. If I do that, I do not think that the poor
things will make it through this weekend. There was a person out in
California who was interested in the big orange one. The owners did
not want to let the kitty out of state. Doesn't make any sense. Joey,
thats the orange tiger's name, might have had a home by now.

| | Dumping them on the highway! And who is this monster? Aren't there laws
about that? no, I guess there aren't.
I suggest a collection. A few dollars from some of the readers of this
file may put together enough money to put them in a shelter, or, in the
worst case, have them put to sleep without pain.
Pity they are declawed. I can only take clawed cats, who can go outdoors
and hold their own against Silvia, my cat, if she gets jealous.
How much money would be necessary to get them in a shelter?

| | First of all, thanks to all of you who have responded to my plea. Last
night, in the post office at my condo complex, I posted pictures of the
kitties and their urgent situation. Within hours I received a call
from a very upset individual. She thought that I was the person
getting rid of the poor things and was all set to give me a piece of
her mind!! She was so relieved when I told her that I was trying to
find homes for them. Anyway, she too is concerned and is planning to
spread the word at her office. Her husband is also going to send out a
message on his system at the office. I just pray that we succeed. I
really appreciate the offers from everyone with regards to donations.
To be quite honest with you I was going to pay whatever costs necessary
to help these guys. I already spent $11.00 for photos to post in
different areas. Money means nothing when little lives are at stake.
I plan to call the owner this morning and try to buy more time.

Again, thanks to all of you and I will keep you posted.

| | I'm not sure where they are located....but....there's a lady in
Concord and I thinkshe has a sattelite operation in either Littleton or
Chelmsford....the name is "Concord Adopt-a-Cat". SHe does some
absolutely outstanding things in this area...like trapping and taming
thrown-away cats that have turned "feral", rescuing and finding homes
for literally HUNDREDS of cats... She had over 60 the last time I
talked to her... Last winter she had some sickness---upper respiratory
infections---and was not taking any more cats until the illnesses were
cleared up, but in desperation she may be another avenue to approach...
      Her name's Mrs. Morway....Phone number is 508-369-9467...

(I got my little "Cookie" from her...and have never regretted it for
a minute...like this morning...I'm sitting on the couch watching the
news on the tube.....a 70 and 55 pound dog squished against each
side....and the "Cookster" jumps up...lies down half on me---half on
the head of the 70 pound dog...does a "roll-rubbie" and then calmly
begins to wash the dog's face... Cook weighs all of 6-7 pounds...but
has about 50 tons of confidence and "prescence"!!)

(B.T.W...for those of you who are wondering "what"???....Many of us
animal-lover-nuts have "special" vocabularys and descriptive
phrases...so for those who DON'T....a "roll-rubbie" is our idiotic
little descriptive for that maneuver that cats do when they roll in
luxurious happiness and end up usually about half upside-down with
their little faces peeking out from between their two front paws...
    Sure...I know I'm somewaht nutso..but I have a lot of fun..)

      Good luck with the "adoptions"..

If it's a matter of faking an adopption so we can ship out the
orange cat to California, I'd be willing to play the part of the
adopter. I can't believe this guy would do something so cruel as
to dump the cats on the road! That's infuriating! As a matter
of fact, if it means saving the life of the other one, I'd be willing
to be a foster home for an additional couple of weeks if it means
    saving his life!

    	God, I can't stand b@$t@rd$ like that! I wish I didn't already
have so many cats, I'd save 'em for good. Like I say, I can't keep
'em, but I'll do anything I can to help save their lives. Let me
    know if I can help.

My only reservation is that I'd hate to committ to a cat I've never

general. Any pertinent information would be helpful. I do have another

 |
| 3653.14 | Words of encouragement | PROSE::GOGOLIN |  | Thu May 31 1990 17:21 | 24 |
| | Not that I'm trying to talk you into anything, Theresa, but....
I adopted 3 of my 5 cats sight unseen, knowing very little of their
backgrounds, as they were strays that people had rescued. Two of the
cats (in separate adoptions) were delivered to my door, and one was
flown to me from California, so there was no way I could back out if
    I didn't like their looks. :-) :-)
But by the time they arrived I was so psyched to have them I would have
been very upset if the adoptions had fallen through. None of them looked
or acted the way I expected from the information I was given before
adopting them, but it was never a problem (I like surprises). It was
great discovering new things about them as we got acquainted, and it
didn't take long to come to love each one.
I do think, though, that it's a good idea to get as much information
as you can in advance, particularly health info. Does anyone know if
the cat would need proof of vacinations/health certificate to get into
California? I believe my Peanut needed a health certificate to get out
    of CA.
    Good luck with your decision.
    Linda

| | The airlines required Peanut (AKA Blackie O'kelly) to have a health
certificate before shipping was allowed. It would be the same with
any cat being shipped via airlines. It is a good idea to have the
cat up to date on vaccinations before shipping.

With Peanut, he was a rescue, so his early health was unknown.
He came through his neuter with flying colors though. Hope that
he has remained healthy for you Linda.

| | Hi Folks,

This has been a nightmare! The owners are going to send me an update
as to any specifics regarding the cats. I had posted a couple of
photos at the post office at my condo. You would not believe the AWFUL
phone message that was on our recorder when I got home yesterday! This
crazy individual was screaming at me, calling me all sorts of names and
threatening to report my husband and I to the MSPCA, of which I am an
active member. She told me that I was cruel and uncaring and slammed
down the phone. She called a second time and left another mean
message. I suddenly realized that this fool thinks that it is I who
wish to dispose of the animals. I went to the post office to post a
reply to that person and right on my poster of the kitties some creep
wrote that I was an A@@hole!!! What is wrong with people?? Why don't
they call for the facts first? I stated right in the note that I was
    doing this for someone else.

Oh well, as I said, I will have the specifics for you soon. Also,
there my possibly be someone else interested in adopting both kitties.
I will know more later. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

isn't willing to adopt the cats s/he's so passionate about.

| | What a great idea!! How does that sound to you Theresa? The owner
sent some info on both cats. The "Morris" kitty is named Joe. He is 4
years old, very fat (20lbs), lazy and loveable. He loves dry food,
Tender Vittles and treats. He likes to sit with his Mom and be petted.
Once in a while his little eye gets running so the owner would clean it
with a Q-tip. I have to do the same with my little Jackie every so
often. Joe is declawed, neutered and very well groomed. He loves to
be brushed and is used to sleeping with the owners. Joe and Sam are
both in great health and are all up to date on their shots. So, what
    do you think?

Ah, yes, now I remember it was the airlines that required the health
certificate. Thanks for refreshing my memory.
Peanut has been very healthy since I got him. The vet found some
gingivitus when I took him for his first feline leukemia shot but
a little medication cleared that right up.
I can't say that Peanut is that different with me than he was with
you, since I mostly only knew in a general way what his personality
was like before I met him. One definite difference is that Peanut will
not let me hold him upside down in my arms like a baby, the way you
did. :-( What's your secret, Jo? He also doesn't like to be held in
a normal position. Even if he asks to be picked up, he doesn't stay
long. :-( He does like to curl up with/on me when I park on the couch
or go to bed at night, though. He also becomes very lovey and attentive
as soon as I step out of the shower. Figure that one out! I am very
happy to have him; he is quite a character!
I have Peanut pictures to send you, Jo; I promise I will do it soon.

| | Hi folks! Well today I get Sam....I'm so excited!

I was frantic yesterday knowing that the clock was ticking down and I
haven't been able to sleep the last three or four nights thinking of
the possible demise of Sam and Joe. When Arlene told me that they
still hadn't found anyone for them - I said 'ah hell...what's one more!
What got me nervous yesterday was the 'saving' of Joe - but a cat-lover
in my group, Marcia Butchart who already has 5 fur-faces, saved the
day. I asked her (all in one breath) if she would take a 4 year old
cat whose owner was going to get rid of him today...and she said 'sure'.
Simple as that. I was SO happy. In fact, I was just in the middle of
writing a desparate memo to the people in our department - but I didn't
have to send it after all. Thank God!!!

So! Tiffany and Otis will have a new brother tonight. I just hope
there won't be a lot of hissing and spitting - after all Sam has
been through I don't want this move for him to be too traumatic.

Will let you all know how the 'welcome committee' greets him -
here's hoping it will be a fairly smooth transition.

Thanks Arlene, Michele and anyone else who helped in saving Joe and
Sam. You deserve a round of applause!!!

Hooray!!! Your all very, very, very, verrrrrrrrrrry special.
