Infopet - Implantation of a microchip in your pet

Part of a system called Infopet, the microchips contain a 10-digit code that
helps the ID network traces the owner's name, address, phone number and other
data that can identify the animal. Jack Greenberg of Toronto, who designed the
system, says that 10,000 pets have been tagged in several states. So far, 27
animals have been returned to their owners because of the microchip. "And the
system is not just for dogs and cats," says Greenberg. "The microchip, about
the size of a grain of rice, has been implanted in birds, reptiles, fish and
even elephants, without adverse effects. More and more animal shelters and
veterinarians have scanning devices to read these chips. The Infopet chip is
$40, which includes the implantation, and there is an $11 annual registration

| How neat, I wonder if they would be able to help out someone in
Albuquerque? It would be nice to not have to worry about the kids.

| Again, this is the device that needs a reader a few inches away
from the implant to read the identification code on the 'chip'.
It does NOT tell you where to search for a pet you can't find.
It is an identification system similar to an ear tattoo. It is
recommended if you don't have an ID tag on your pet. - Chris

| This form of identification has been discussed over here (UK) as
a means of registration. With the recent bouts of attacks on children
by viciously trained Rotweilers, Pit Bull Terriers etc a national
dog and owner register was thought of being the only way to help
try to curb this.
Unfortunately this ruling was turned down in Parliament (we have
some real nutcases deciding what is best for us) because they thought
it would not be feasible to have every dog owner along with his
pet registered.
