3628.0. "Flies!!!!!!!" by ELMAGO::RSTOLL (If it ain't one thing, it's another) Tue May 22 1990 18:47

Well, I looked everywhere and did a show keywords and couldn't find
anything about flies. My problem (hopefully it isn't) is that
one of my cats Smokey loves to go after flies and when she catches
them (and she *always* does) SHE EATS THEM-UGHHHHHH!! What I want
to know, is it bad for her? Will it eventually make her sick? Does
anyone else have a cat that loves to eat flies?

Ya - I retired my flyswatter years ago. I like to keep the window
open to the deck for my friends and I never worry about flies cause
they take care of them. Now mosquitoes are a different story....

Not to worry, you have a perfectly normal cat!!

Flies and spiders are Spots' favorite h'ordovers.

Flies, moths, beetles, spiders, etc!!!! Nothing funnier
then when a winged creature gets in the house, and four
bug crazy cats start chasing it all over the living room.

Ever seen a cat climbing straight up an 8 foot wall? :-)

L-, that's exactly what Smokey does. Plus she makes all these funny
sounds. She opens her mouth and these little ca ca ca ca sounds
come out. I guess if you all have cats with the same kind of appetite,
and they're still alive, looks like I don't have to worry. But it
still grosses me out. Especially when they are big ones! %-} UGH!

Otis is the hunter....silent but deadly!

Otis doesn't make a 'peep'....he just lays his HUGE paw on 'it' and
appears to _count_ to 10. I guess he is trying to cut off its air
supply! Then, gently and ever so slowly, he raises his paw (from
left to right...he is right handed :)' - throws back his neck and
either chows it down - or goes through the process again. Very rarely
does he repeat the process - he has a 98% success rate.

His patience and concentration is unblievable!

Tiffany, on the other hand, gives it all away. A hunter she is NOT
and she doesn't have a clue! She is too _prissy_ to 'get down'...you
know what I mean? By the time she sees it - she pounces, chatters,
chases and wacks at it so many times (and with no front claws she is
REALLY effective...) that she doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell
at finding it again, let alone KILLING it! Plus - she gets cross-eyed
and doesn't find it because she can't focus on anything at that point!
I think she makes herself sick!

    Really funny to watch.

Is Smokey part maine coon by any chance?
There was a moth flying around my bedroom last night. I didn't
see it right away but Sasha did. I heard her making these noises
(without looking at her) and couldn't figure out what her problem
was. Then I turned to her and there she was, mouth agape, eyes
wide open watching this moth,.,.and making really weird noises.
She got really upset when it disappeared. (I think it went behind
the curtains) She looked and looked but couldn't find it!

Yup, we call them "protein snacks" at my house. Ever
see 7 cats going after the same fly? ;-) ;-)

3628.9The "Flying fly-catcher"...MCIS5::MCDONOUGHWed May 23 1990 14:2310
My uncle had a cat that lived until age 21 and it was the most
unbeleivable fly-catcher I've ever seen.. He would LEAP into the air
and catch them in his mouth in mid-air!! I've seen him fly off the back
of the sofa...sail three or four feet through the air and "SNAP"...no
more fly!! I don't ever recall seeing him miss...(although I'm sure he
    did now and then..)

Wish I could train my slobby sloths to do that!!

Jim, are you sure your uncle's cat wasn't half frog? ;-)

Judy, no Smokey is just maybe half-persian and half ADLH. She
has one of those smished faces like persians. They really do make
funny noises, don't they? And they really get mad when they can't
find it. I feel better knowing that there are lots of fliers (like
mousers) out there. BTW if anyone gets Cat Fancy, Smokey looks alot
like Puffer in "Puffer Grows Up"

Yup, what's funny is watching a circle of about 12 'hunters'
grouped around 'something' that can't be seen by the naked
eye on the dark rug - something that 'they' can see, noses
pressed to the floor, hind ends up in the air with tails
high, growling at one tiny creature who wished it were
somewhere else real fast! and the victor muches away at
the spoils, while the other 11 keep sniffing the rug wondering
    where it went !!

3628.12Flies are AcceptableSANFAN::FOSSATJUWed May 23 1990 19:5810
I was concerned about one of mine eating more than his share of
flies at one time but I was re-assured that it wasn't harmful.
I guess I was more grossed out at finding half eaten bodies on window
sills, hardwood floors, etc. If mean if they're gonna eat the darn
thing, then eat the whole thing.

My three especially go nutz when a moth comes in the house - talk
about climbing straight up the walls.............

The thing to watch out for is wasps or anything else that stings.
Vitamin went for a wasp once and ate it and it stung her in the
mouth. She was OK although she kept shaking her head, as if she
was trying to get rid of it.

And talking of moths, we've had a plague over the last few months
    - having lots to chose from must be boring - flies are much more
    challenging!

3628.14It's good entertainmentIOSG::THOMPSONRNostalgia isn't what it used to beThu May 24 1990 09:2017
Henri interprets my lifting her off the ground as "mummy making it
easier for me to track down the flies"!

As soon as I'm cradling her in my arms she immediately starts looking
around for the flies and spiders which must now be more accessible!
Sometimes if she sees one that's out of reach she'll meow at me until I
pick her up (what a lazy cat!!) so that she can have a better go at it.

Then when she gets it, does she put it out of its misery straight away?
NO CHANCE! She gives it a good old whack so that it's concussed, and
then nudges it along as if to say "go on - entertain me!". Then when
she gets bored she finally eats it (YUK!!). Sophie usually just sits and
watches the whole procedure with a look of utter contempt.

    Cats can be really cruel!!

3628.15Scared about waspsELMAGO::RSTOLLIf it ain't one thing, it's anotherThu May 24 1990 11:338
That is one thing I am concerned about is wasps. Smokey is *such*
a baby and I know if she got stung by one, she would carry on so
much, I would end up taking her to the vet. BTW, Rocky & Smokey
got a clean bill of health last night from their vet and are all
caught up on their shots ;-)
