3603.0. "I love " by ASDS::MAHON () Tue May 15 1990 16:33

My baby has gone to kitty heaven. I came home from work the other
night and had to do an errand on the way. When we passed the house
the first time, it was fine. When we get to where we turn the
second time, there was my Tigger, lying in the road. We parked the
truck at the house and when we went to the street to get the cat,
it was gone. For one joyous moment, I thought it must have just
been bumped and had run across the street. We started looking around
for it, when a little beat up red car pulled up to us. The young
girl's eyes were full of tears (she was with her boyfriend). She
said she saw the cat lying in the road (but did she REALLY hit it?),
and pulled over to get it. It was lying in her backseat. dead....
Jack carried the cat back to the house. Gretchen (our german shephard)
was so excited to see the cat. Gretchen came into our house as a
puppy and Tigger was its best friend. I took the little red collar off
that had his tag Tigger on it, and put it with another momento I had
from when my grandmother died. Jack buried the cat, I made it a
cross out of sticks, said some prayers. Balled my eyes out (of course)
and every day I say a prayer and put flowers. Gretchen was very
depressed always looking for Tigger. She wouldn't eat, couldn't rest,
    so sad.

Well, to make the story more happy. About 1/2 hour after we buried the
cat, there was a knock at the door. It was the people who hit? the
cat. They brought me a kitten. I named it sprinkles.

But what can take the place of Tigger...............

I think the gesture of those people was a warm and touching one,
and if they were indeed the same folks who hit Tigger at least they
had the guts to face up to it, and you. A lot of people would have
continued on their merry way as if nothing ever happened.

The new kitten will not replace Tigger, but will find a special
place in your heart nonetheless. I am sorry to hear about your
loss, as I lost a cat in a similar way, but no one cared, or stopped
    to help.

I hope you will reconsider and keep the new kitten inside. Even
though I own two indoor/outdoor cats, in the future, my vote is
to keep all my furry kids safely indoors.

    Our thoughts are with you,

Was it hard for you to type the base note? Cause it was sure hard
for me to read it. My deepest sympathy to you. I hope Sprinkles
will help smooth out the hurt that you are going through. I wonder
if those people really did hit it. I guess you'll never know.
It must have really bothered them for them to bring you a new baby.
Did they say if Sprinkles had all his/her shots?
I must go and compose myself-your note really got me!
Again, I am so sorry. RIP Tigger.

I also lost a cat to the outdoors and no one owned up to it. Somehow
it seems so much gentler that those folks cared enough to do what
    they did.

Of course Sprinkles can't take Tigger's place. All cats are unique
and create their own special place in our hearts. I'm sure, tho,
that as the days pass you'll be very grateful for Sprinkles. A new
    kitten has remarkable healing powers.

I will add Tigger's name to the Silver Lining Memorial List for Q4.

Knowing that other people who are strangers to me are kind enough
to reply to my base note is very touching. I suppose it was nice
of the people to stop for the cat, but every time I look at the
kitten, I see the woman's face. Hopefully that will fade with time
    too.

We put Gretchen and the kitten together for the first time, and
Gretchen just licks and licks the new kitty. I guess that's her
way of welcoming Sprinkles into the household.

Thanks for your replies. I had to keep exiting out, because here
I was sitting crying at my terminal. I must have looked stupid.

I am so sorry to hear of the death of Tigger...such a sad thing
    to have happen!

It's so traumatic to lose somone you love (Tigger) and, although you
cannot physically replace Tigger, you were given the chance to love a
    brand new little life.

There is something special about a kitten's innocence and their playful
nature. I marvel at their ability to jump STRAIGHT up (my Otis looked
like a Halloween cat with his tail bushed out, his back hunched and his
ears back) when they are playing. The warmth of their little body held
next to you and their beautiful 'baby' faces that just wants to make
    you melt.

I am sure, in time, Sprinkles will win you over, completely!

    Wishing you all the best,

Brenda,

I'm so sorry to hear about Tigger. Hopefully, Sprinkles will bring you much
joy and will find a place in your heart right next to Tigger.

Yesterday, while I was at the vet, a woman came in clutching a mangy looking,
slightly wet cat. Seems her beloved kitty had been struck by a car the day
before and died from her injuries. Earlier in the day, the woman heard a
cat outside her door, crying in the rain. When she opened the door, this
mangy, hungry, wet kitty moved in and found herself a new home. The verdict
from the vet was that 3 new little kittens can be expected in about a week.
The woman's reaction..."Who has time to grieve?! I've got booties to knit!"
We were all crying...even a doggy who was in for a checkup was crying!

Bless you, Brenda. It will take time to heal, but in the meantime, Sprinkles
is busy climbing your drapes...

Yes, Sprinkles is climbing the drapes, the waterbed, the couch,
    the walls..................taunting the dog..............it tried
climbing my body leaving scratches up and down me. It's worth
it though...when I feel like crying, I'll hear this little purr
coming from the kitten, and I'm comforted.

I fear if Sprinkles tries to climb my husband's leg, she'll be
    next to Tigger. JUST KIDDING!

3603.24SPRINKLES NEEDS A CARING HOMEASDS::MAHONMon May 21 1990 13:3221
In the first note I put that Tigger had been hit by a car and killed.
Sprinkles is doing great. Our dog Gretchen is not. Ever since we
got the kitten she(Gretchen) has been very rebellious towards us and
the kitten. She acts like we never even trained her now. When she
sees me holding the kitten she runs and sniffs it, then goes nuts
running around the house looking for Tigger. She definitely DOES NOT
    care for the kitten.

So...Would anyone be willing to take this loveable dark brown (very
furry) kitten home with them? Gretchen is trying to kill it I think.
When she does get to the kitten. It's not a very pretty sight. It's
like she's playing, but she takes nip shots and big swipes at the poor
    thing.

To save my husband's and my sanity, I think we need to find the kitten
    another owner.

I think you should talk to your vet about Gretchen. She is probably
grieving for Tigger and sees the kitten as an intruder. Possibly
a short course of tranquilizers would help. (This must be very hard
for you and your husband to deal with after Tigger's loss, but
I think you may be able to save the situation. Can you keep them
separated for awhile until Gretchen has more time to adjust?)

3603.26MARX::BARLOWMon May 21 1990 14:2712

    Brenda,

I, also, think that those people might not have hit Tigger. I once
found a cat dead on the road and I too, went door-to-door all
teary-eyed. Anyone who loves their pets would feel badly for someone
who had just lost theirs. Also, I figured that the owners would rather
find their cat in a human's arms than on the road. I hope you resolve
    what to do about Sprinkles.

3603.27I didn't do it..honestWILKIE::IVESMon May 21 1990 16:2428
I too stopped to pick up a beautiful white cat that had been hit by a
car. (I didn't see it happen.) While I was crying my eyes out and walk
ing to the side of the road, a police car came along and stopped and
accused me of hitting the cat. I was crying too much to argue with him
and he didn't offer to do anything but watch as I laid the poor kitty
on the side of the road till I could drive home and get a box. I just
couldn't go knocking on doors with him in my arms. I wanted him to have
some sort of dignity while I was looking for his owners.

I lived maybe 3 minutes away and found a box the minute I walked into
the garage and filled with with hay from our bunnies supply and headed
right back and he was gone. I called the police chief to see if someone
there had picked him up. He said, "Are you the woman who hit the cat
and was putting on the side of the road when one of my men caught you?"
    I hung up.......

I never did find out who's cat it was, but I felt so badly that no one
    stopped.

The tears I shed didn't stop for some time. When I would think of it
tears would come again. That's been 13 years ago and as I am writing
    this my eyes are misty.

I hope things work out okay with your new kitty. They do take time
to introduce into an established household.

I do remember when I WAS the one who hit a cat.

One dark and rainy night - this white 'thing' tore in front of my car
and saw it go into the woods. I was in a residential neighborhood and
    - crying (hysterically, I might add) - I went to about 15 homes.

I explained I hit a cat - described it - got the door slammed in my
face about 3 times....brought one woman to tears (it wasn't hers)
and one poor family thought I had hit their child. I was THAT
    bad.

I never DID find out whose cat it was. It didn't fit the
description of any animal in the immediate neighborhood. When I
went back to where I had come from (my in-laws) I threw open the
door - crying out of control - yelling 'I killed it - I killed it'
they thought I had hit a person.

I did call the police and they said that I didn't have to report
hitting a cat - but thanked me just the same. I left them my name
and telephone number but no one ever called me back.

Part of me _still_ feels remorse - part of me says 'it could have been
a rabbit' - but I never want to know that terrible feeling again.
Whether it is a cat, dog, rabbit, squirrel, bird...or god-forbid, a human
being - I still get sick to my stomach.

Maybe that is why I am so 'over protective' of my kids and my two
cats....accidents only take a second and can happen to the best of
    people.

Years ago, my mother hit and injured someone's dog (it was chasing the
car). The dog had a flea collar on, so it must have belonged to
someone, but no tag. She took the poor thing to the vet, and tried to
find the owner, but no one ever claimed the poor animal. I don't know
who paid the vet bill (probably mother), but the poor dog, after he
recovered, went to the animal shelter. Mother was VERY upset...

Reading these replies made me go home and take another look at
the poor little kitty there. To end this story I HAVE DECIDED
TO KEEP THE KITTEN. The stupid little things it does (except when
it tried to climb my legs) are really cute. I WILL MAKE IT A HOUSE
