3561.0. "Cat runs (UK)" by XNOGOV::LISA () Tue May 01 1990 09:52

    Do any UK FELINERS know where I can get a cat-run from? I am
    considering enclosing an area aound the back door of my house so
    that the cats can come out of the flap and then into an enclosed but
    open-air area. I have thought about making one from scratch myself,
    but I want it to look neat and be secure - I am not convinced that I
    could make it any of these things.

    I have seen a couple of advertisments, but I want to know if anyone
    out there has got one/seen one!

    Thanks!

    Lisa plus Pookie plus one, maybe two more ;-)

    So, no one in the UK has a cat run? I find this hard to believe !
    Come on people, don't be shy ;-)

	My cats have free-reign out of doors, so no run.

	What about asking boarding catteries if they have them, and where they
	get them?

    No, I've never seen or heard of one. Heather's idea about asking
    boarding catteries is a good one.

3561.4I thought about running a cattery!IOSG::PRICE_BUDGENFri May 04 1990 09:0714
    Lisa,

    Somewhere I have cot a list of cattery suppliers because at one point I
    was thinking of setting up a cattery. These runs come either singly or
    in blocks of three and vary in width and length but they also come
    equipped with the cat's chalet. I'm not sure whether they are sold
    separately from the chalet but I shall try to find out.

    Actually, I was thinking of a similar arrangement myself if we should
    move house in the near future. It may be a day or two before I come up
    with the details as they are buried amongst my junk at home!

    Re: the base note.

        If I was in a similar situation I would probably not be prepared
    to pay for such a thing, I would set about doing it myself, however
    I can understand that some people would not want to do this, but
    is there some local 'handyperson' type who would be able to do it
    if you supply the raw materials and a specification ?, you may
    find it much cheaper than buying a ready made run and also it would
    fit your requirements exactly. It is certainly worth checking out
    the local newsagents windows for some 'handyperson' type postcards.

3561.6We did our OwnSANFAN::FOSSATJUFri May 04 1990 20:0715
    We turned our upstairs deck into a cat run and did it ourselves
    - didn't turn out too bac either. We purchased redwood fencing
    that comes in rolls (bound together with sturdy wire) and attached
    it to the redwood frame and then used chicken wire to finish off
    the enclosure. We had one escape but once we found the area and
    re-secured it we haven't had any problems. We were quoted quite
    a bit of money from a contractor and then decided to do it ourselves.

    Within the area we have planter boxes of grass, wheat and oats for
    the cats to munch on and they just love it. They are outside but
    safely enclosed and we can rest easy knowing where they are and
    that they are getting fresh air. Go for it with your own creation.

    If you decide you can't do-it-yourself, try contacting a company
    called Agriframes - not sure where they're based, but they advertise
    in most national newspapers at the weekend - I think I've still
    got a catalogue of theirs at home, if you're interested I'll get
    an address and phone number for you.

    Page 26 of the catalogue has cat runs (and dog runs - recommended
    for Houdini felines), they come in 2 or 3 standard sizes, and they
    will also custom-build them to your specifications.

    Hope this is useful to you

3561.10Thanks for the suggestions!XNOGOV::LISAThu May 10 1990 07:1817
    Thanks Sue! I'll give them a ring and get a brochure.

    This W/E, we will be measuring up and getting some quotes. I am
    very keen to "convert" Pookie into an indoor cat because we live
    near a fast road (not many cars, but *VERY* fast). Percy her
    brother got run over and killed in March. Also she is a very
    successful hunter (*YUK*). We have tried to keep her in, but
    she loves to go outside and cries constantly. I hope this is
    going to solve that problem, or at least make the adjustment
    easier for her.

    I don't want to get involved in any indoor/outdoor arguments. I just
    thought I'd let people know what I planned and why.

    Lisa plus Pookie.
