    Marilyn,

I'm not sure why T.V. works - I have heard that it does slow the flow.
You might consider calling the company - they must have a nutritionist
or dietary expert around that could help you. Have you asked your
vet why he suggested it? One would think they would know why it
works?? I am on my knees in gratitude that I have never had a
"d" problem - I can just picture the big 'd' with 18 cats! ugh
Having it with one must be so worrisome.
I seem to remember an instance of a cat with tapeworm that had a
stool problem - droncit cleared up both problems. Maybe Bisol
will help - that works for the big 'd' also.
3492.2Someone told me to beware of Propelyne GlycolNATASH::ANDERSONWed Apr 04 1990 13:4523
Thanks. The big 'd' problem is even worse with a long haired cat -
as in OTIS! Blecch! Poor kitty - for days I chased him with a
    soapy wet towel.

All the vet said was that there was a 'binding agent' in it but didn't
    say what it was.

In my original note (3343.0) someone had written a response telling
me to be careful of Tender Vittles because it had this 'Propelyne
Glycol' in it and that a note had been written about it awhile ago.
I was hoping 'someone' would remember what note it was in so that
I could go back and read it.

Actually, it is good to know that T.V. does have that effect for
diarrhea....as a temporary solution - until you can get to the
vets. My Otis ALWAYS seems to get the 'runs' on the week-end
when I have to pay the 'emergency' fee.

I will continue to keep Tender Vittles on hand - just in case I
happen to run (pardon the pun) into this problem again.

What happened to the base note?

Biosol Aquadrops are an intestinal antibiotic that is very effective
for relieving the big D. The antibiotic in Biosol is Neomycin and
it works only in the intestines and digestive tract. You might
    ask your vet for some.

I entered the note of Propylene Glycol. Seems it was a couple of
months ago, but I think the title was something about Tender Vittles.

I will see if I can find it for you.

It would appear that the author deleted it, although I'm not sure why.

3492.6Thanks, Jo!NATASH::ANDERSONThu Apr 05 1990 13:4022
Thanks, Jo, hope you can find it for me.

I have introduced the Fresh Catch (shrimp and tuna) to Otis - about 1
tablespoon at a time - and he has now been allowed to have about 1/4
cup of Purina Cat Chow a day too...and it hasn't bothered him at all.

I really am beginning to think it was the medicine he was on and
perhaps being so frightened and traumatized at the vets - his
    intestines just got screwed up.

I read the label on the Tender Vittles Box - and Propylene Glycol is
about the 6th one listed - of about 35 ingredients....so there has to
be quite a bit of it in there.

I will check with the vet to see if I can get some Biosol Aquadrops
to keep on hand...don't want to feed Otis any food (i.e. Tender Vittles)
which could be bad for him over a great length of time.

He IS going to live forever.

The note on Tender Vittles and propylene glycol is number 2758.

Sorry it took so long to find.

3492.9I read the Winn Foundation Report - thanks!NATASH::ANDERSONThu Apr 05 1990 16:2113
    Jo,

Thanks for giving me that note number - I read it - and I am NOT
giving him any more Tender Vittles. I saw that your note (Winn
Foundation Report) was written in August of 1989 - I don't suppose
any more information has been gathered - for a study done on
    canned food.

I will check all labels before he puts another morsel of food
    in his mouth.

I believe that the propylene glycol is only used in semi-moist
type foods. You would have to check the labels of the canned foods
that you are using. I would expect that all semi-moist cat foods
had this ingredient. When more information shows up in the Alamanac,
    I will enter it.

Do ask your vet about the Biosol. I buy it at the cat shows, and
always have some in my show bag. My cats have been known to get
diarrhea at a show, from mom spoiling them with treats all day.
    The Biosol works quickly.
