3456.0. "Bird-watching with the Cats" by DELNI::JARMSTRONG () Mon Mar 26 1990 11:57

    Although, it may seem illogical - I go birdwatching with my cats. They
    are rather old cats (12 & 17) in a young cat neighborhood so they need
    a little protection from me when they go out for walks in woods behind
    our backyard.

    Walks are a slow process with cats; they wander off the path and come
    back, they sniff every branch and leaf, they stop and wait hopefully
    for a chipmunk to come out of his hole. So I took up bird-watching to
    pass the time while they explored. It's rather pleasant but for some
    unknown reason I hear more birds than I see...

    So I bought a birdsong identification tape. Now when I listen to the
    birds I'll know what I'm not seeing. The tapes are very good. The
    first time I played one Mishka chicken-cat hid under the bed and CAT
    tried to remove the bird from inside the speaker with his claws.

    Perhaps I really should take up wild-flower identification instead.

    Nah - you know cats. If you take up wild-flower identification,
    they'll suddenly acquire a taste for wild plants.

    We bought a window bird feeding tray. It has three levels, with
    three purches for them to feed in. The unique thing about this,
    besides the suction cups that hold it on the window is, that while
    the birds are feeding, they are looking at themselves in the mirror
    in front of them. They can't see me or my cats watching them from
    inside the house. The cats just love this new attraction!!!!

3456.4Where did you get the mirror-feeder?DELNI::JARMSTRONGMon Mar 26 1990 17:454
    Nancy,

    Where did you get the great feeder? It sounds like it would be great
    fun.
3456.5Did you want to *relax*, mommy??WFOVX5::BAIRDThu Mar 29 1990 12:1514

    Well, we don't birdwatch with the "gang" but we do have a relaxtion
    tape that we can't play because of them. We got a collection of
    tapes a few years ago that includes Cape Cod surf, rainstorm, etc.--
    but one of the tapes is called Tropical Forest....you guessed it,
    all the noises of the tropics--the insects, the rain, and oh god,
    the troopical *birds*. We put the tape on once in a while just
    to get a laugh, as the cats go nuts trying to figure out just *where*
    these **birds** are!! Can't play it too often though, the speakers
    just can't take the abuse!!

    Kids!!! Ya got to love 'em!!

    Debbi and the gang (all five of them)
3456.6I'm Watching You!!!!AIMHI::BOYKOThu Mar 29 1990 17:1116
    I bought the feeder at Agways in Hudson, N.H., but I'm sure you could
    find it at some pet stores or at Blue Seal. Its in the shape of a
    window frame, that you fill from the top with seed, then the seeds
    run around the frame, constantly supplying the 3 purches for the
    birds to sit and eat from. There is a mirror behind the purches,
    so the birds don't see you from the inside watching them, or
    the cats as a matter of fact! My cats just love this display every
    morning about 7:30 am!!! You can stick this feeder on any window,
    because it has great suction cups that actually hold real good.

    It sells for about $50.00 on sale, but well worth it because of
    its function and the way its made.

    Have fun!

    I saw that feeder in the Animail catalog this week. It sold for
    about $79.99 there. Looked great, I would love to have one myself.
    It has suction cups that attach it to the outside of the window.

A little late, but that's what next-unseen is for, right? :-)

One of our favorite TV shows is Nature, and often there are birds on the show.
One of Tigger's favorite places to hang out was perched on top of the back
cushion of the loveseat, which is not against the wall. He can see the TV
from there. Whenever he was up there while we were watching Nature, and they
were showing birds, we'd keep looking back at him. Sometimes he'd just lay
there, but sometimes he'd be staring intently at the TV. Once he went up to
the TV and put his paws up on the "entertainment center" to get a better look
(I guess...). We were afraid for a while that he'd try to pounce on the
birds! We should try playing the bird calls tape sometime and see what he
does.
