my workstation node is named RAGDOL:: I have had so many comments
on this.
Great fun, and always gives me a chance to talk about the breed.

| Ok, gang. How does an un-informed person (like me) get to use one of
those?? I thought the Dept picked the node-name and that's what you
were stuck with.
I'm lucky with AIMHI my motto is ONWARD and UPWARD.

I think that in most groups you can request a name for your
workstation. If it isn't already in use, it's yours.
Barbara - yeah, I'd looked up RAGDOL and saw it was already in use. A
few other good ones were gone, too - like KORAT and CALICO. My
workstation is named SANDY, but then I named it before I got into cats
in a big way :^}

| Re kitty nodenames -
FYI - doing an MC NCP SHOW NODE nodename_you_want and getting an
"unrecognized node" doesn't guarantee that it isn't in use.
There's something called "hidden areas", the nodenames of which
aren't known by your node, but only by "hidden area routers".
There are also UNIX nodes which use VMS nodes as mail routers.
Mail addresses like FOO::BAR::username are sometimes hints of these.
The only way you can be sure that a name is available is to go through
your network registrar.

I use the Findnode utility (from the Toolshed) to determine whether or
not a nodename is in use. I also double check a current copy of
mininode.lst, which includes hidden and/or Ultrix nodes that don't
necessarily run DECnet.

CATTOY and KATFSH appear to be still available. The others (including
FATCAT) are taken - bummer, 'cause I *like* that one! :^}

3436.14 | How about ADVCAT? | COMICS::WARNES | Finns det ngon hr som talar Svensk? | Fri Mar 23 1990 06:59 | 9 |
| I hit lucky when my nodename was selected for me, for my soon-to-arrive
Workstation. ADVCAT, an abbreviation for a well known yellow drink,
but (coincidentally) containing the word CAT. Now I need to figure
what the ADV part could denote
... A Decidedly Venerable CAT perhaps ?
