3427.0. "Any extra certificates?" by CGVAX2::LANDRY (Closer to the Heart) Thu Mar 15 1990 15:40

    I feel just awful.

I was talking to a woman who is an acquaintance of mine (I don't know
her real well). She was telling me that her kitty has not come home
for a couple of nights. I asked her if her cat was fixed and she said
that "Wanda" was not. I proceeded to lecture her (tactfullness is not
one of my better qualities) on how the shelters are full of unwanted
kitties and how she should have Wanda fixed immediately.

Well, the poor woman was in tears. I calmed her down by advising her
to put up posters around her neighborhood (not a busy area - thankful
for that) and how she should call the shelter closest to her home. I
didn't mean to make her worry more than she already was, but it makes
me downright mad when people take for granted that their pet might get
pregnant and so what. She said to me that she would like to have
kittens, but I persuaded her to go to her local shelter if she wanted
another kitten and that would make her realize just how many kitties
    are homeless.

Anyway...I was wondering if anyone out there would have one of those
coupons that you save money on if you have your pet fixed - and if so
could you write (CGVAX2::LANDRY) or give me a call DTN 264-1727 so I
could give this to her and cut down the cost. I think that is what is
holding her back from have it done.

Thanks for lending an ear...hope Wanda is found soon.

Wanda came home. She definitely was in heat. At least she's home safe
    and sound.

Thanks for replying, Nancy, and I will give the certificate to Janice
    when I get it.

If she was in heat and outside then you guys better move fast
to get her spayed. Make sure you tell the vet that she is most
likely pregnant. It'll cost a bit more for the spay but it beats
having to place a litter of unwanted kittens.
      Good luck.

    Nancy,

I am working on that. For some reason Janice would like her to have 1
litter. She said her sister's cat had a litter and they placed all 5.
I am going to explain to her that, if the kittens are not placed then
she has to go thru brining them to a shelter and you become *very*
attached to the little ones and that it is sometimes hard to bring them
to the shelters. We'll see what happens.

I will be sure to explain to her that the vet will have to know that
she is pregnant if they plan to spay now.

Thanks for your concern and wise advice.

    Anna -
Tell her that every year in this country we spend $1 MILLION JUST
TO EUTHANIZE UNWANTED CATS & DOGS. Please tell her what a horrible
problem the cat overpopulation situation is and that even if she
places those kittens she may be depriving a shelter cat of a home!
She's in a situation to prevent another contribution to the problem.
I hope you can convince her.
      Thanks for your efforts.

In fact, this is far too low a figure....they spend over $200,000.00 in Santa
Clara County, California each year to KILL unwanted dogs and cats each
year alone. Even if a person HATES cats, this should be a very big
concern....this money is coming out of their pockets, too.

I second Nancy's concern -- please help your friend learn about the
situation so she can make an informed decision.

And thanks for trying.....we all appreciate it.

re that figure - I think it was from some MSPCA (mass society for...)
literature... accurate, but for the state and not the country.
