3422.1 | Some dumb suggestions.... | BOOVX1::MANDILE | | Wed Mar 14 1990 14:12 | 10 |
| Some suggestions from the U.S. (don't know if they will be useful)
Ship via train? Advertise to see if anyone is driving from
Kent to Galway and offer to pay them to deliver the cats?
Try same method w/a private plane? Pay for a seat on the
plane and fly them in one seat accompanied by companion?
Hope these dumb ideas help.

| Dave,
Have you tried sweet talking Aviation Services in Ayr?
The DEC jet flys regularly between Farnborough/Ayr/Galway maybe they
can advise/help. Problem still remains of getting them to Farnborough
though.
Have you tried ringing British Airways Cargo they must be able to ship
door to door or know a man who can.

Dave,
How about ringing the Cat Protection League HQ in Horsham, West Sussex.
Sorry don't know the phone number. They will surely know where to go,
may even be able to recommend.

3422.4 | contact local catteries | IOSG::PRICE_BUDGEN | | Thu Mar 15 1990 08:16 | 8 |
| Any good cattery in the district where the cats are can help you. Could
the person looking after the cats get some details for you? Quarantine
catteries and kennels are also a help - they must have contact with the
right sort of people. Yellow pages is also a help - a cattery near you
in Galway may also have relevant information -they must have had some
experience of this.

Avril !!
Worldwide Animal travel seem just what I was looking for.. they said
they could arrange to transport Kevin and Emma to Shannon airport,
after collecting them from our house in Kent.
I have to arrange containers and get a vets certificate for them, apart
from that it should be straightforward. Shannon airport is not too far
away, maybe 2 hours drive.
Next step is to see if Digital will pay for it as part of my relocation
allowance!
I had little success yesterday... I first went to the pet shop in
Galway city (theres only one) because I couldnt find any trace of
a cattery in the yellow pages. The man in the pet shop told me
(incorrectly) that my cats would need 6 months quarantine.
Next I thought I'd try and find a cat breeders magazine. Not easy as
there arent too many cat breeders in the area.. I settled for two
magazines; one was Dog Breeders monthly and the other "Mad about pets".
None gave me any useful information, although I did get a free packet
of rabbit flavoured "Smackos" (dog chews).
Bye for now, Avril
and have a happy St. Patricks Day

3422.8 | Costs "should" be covered | FSTVAX::HULL | Don't Ruin My Bad Reputation! | Fri Mar 16 1990 12:29 | 9 |
| Dave,
In the U.S., Digital does pay for the costs of transporting pets and
also the cost of buying carriers. So be sure to keep your receipts and
check with your local Personnel department - it should be covered.

| Be extremely careful that if they are shipped in cargo compartments,
the compartment will be pressurized and teh temperature won't get below
freezing if the compartment is unheated. If airline personnel aren't
used to pets in the cargo compartment and don't use their brains,
tragedies can happen.

| Dave,
So glad you were able to find those people to be of use. I think you
will find that they will take care to see that the cats fly in the
right type of compartment - they must do this sort of thing all the time
- but it might be worth asking them to see how they will check this
with the airlines.
Let me know how you get on. I may need to use them this year to fly my
cats up to Inverness if we should move there.

Remember this topic anybody?
Well Kevin and Emma made it safely to Ireland in the end, I drove them
over myself. Ireland was a culture shock for them at first, being city
cats, the cows and sheep were a bit frightening for a while, and the
local farm cats not too friendly either, but they soon settled in. The
countryside was a much safer and healthier place (or so I thought!).
Unfortunately since then, Emma (the cream/persian) was tragically run
over (on a road that has maybe a dozen cars all day). Of all the things
to happen...

Poor Emma, I know how awful you feel, I just lost a cat on my
street to a car. I know how much it hurts now. I live in the
countryside too, but I guess nothing is safe.
