3344.0. "Cats and Lobsters??" by OASS::BURDEN_D (No! Your *other* right!) Fri Feb 16 1990 17:30

Well, it's Friday afternoon and I couldn't find anything in here dealing with
lobsters, so I figured, why not?

Last night I brought home two 1.5 lb lobsters for dinner and while the pot of
water was getting hot on the stove I took the beasts out of the bag and placed
them on the kitchen floor. I was curious to see how Erm and Misty would
react... Misty was still sitting up on the counter to keep away from Anthony
(14 months, smart cat) but Erm was roaming around the living room. I went over
and picked up Erm and placed her about 6 feet from the lobsters (before anyone
gets upset, I had not removed the elastic bands from the claws).

Basically the whole episode was very anti-climaxtic since Misty just stared
down at them from above and Erm slowly slinked towards them but was distracted
by a small fly and chased after it instead. The lobsters weren't very active,
they spent most of the time cleaning their front feelers or whatever they are.

The water got hot, I snipped the elastic bands and splash they went...... the
lobsters, not Erm and Misty that is...:-)

Some how I feel that cooking LIVE lobsters is cruel. And letting
cats play with them ahead of time borders on sick.

It was also anti-climax watching our three watch a live crab before
it went into the pot. Here we were full of anticipation - all the
funny antics etc. that would happen and it was dulls ville. (yup
    three bored cats)

However, I took home a large chicken foot from the meat market and
they had one h**l of a good time with that - you should try one
    - under supervision of course.

Well, it doesn't sound like anyone did any "taunting". Sounds
    more like they just "looked".

    I'm just glad I don't like lobster - I don't think I could drop
a live anything in a pot of boiling water either.

Anyway - lets lighten up just a bit here. I'm a big animals' rights
advocate, as you know, and I also don't think animal abuse is funny
but I think there are far better causes than this particular one
    for our energies.

Well,I think thats put one noter off noting anymore?

Everyone who comes to see my crew thinks I'm cruel for picking the
boys up by their tails at 1st until they see the boys come running
up and turning their tails towards me for more "play"( I dont mean
ALL the cat up just the rear-end.)

I hate to tell you this Phil, but the elevated tail is a cats way
of saying "hello" not "Please pick me up by the tail, Dad."

Seriously - watch your cat sometime, if it isn't paying attention
to you, walk over and say hello - the tail will shoot straight
    up.

No,No,No Nancy,I thought you might say that!
Ha,thought you,I've got him this time;-)

I know what you mean about the tail but what happens is this.

I run my hands over the floor and they chase it. One will nip my
hand and then as I'm squatting run round behind me and run between
my legs until the tail is almost up my nose where I grab the tail
low down and lift the rear end up and spin whichever around. THEN,
as the game goes,I wave my hand around just out of reach in the
air making whichever jump up and nip again. So,I grab the tail again
and spin again and so the game goes on and on and.......

But if they are in the garden when I walk up to them then its a
case of grab and spin, spin and grab....

Oh well, enough spinning and grabbing, but in my case its

" "Please pick me up by the tail, Dad."

Well, I guess if you were my Dad I'd be a bit "off balance" by now
myself. You know, maybe Bob belongs with you guys ;-)

Re: cooking lobsters

You don't have to put live lobsters in boiling water. You
can sever their spinal cord to quickly kill them first.

The only difference between lobsters and chicken is that you
have to do the killing yourself but they taste so good it is
	worth it.

Put lobsters in the freezer for about 20 minutes prior to cooking,
the cold 'puts them to sleep'.
