3334.2 | Nolvasan, mainly, or chlorine bleach sometimes | RHODES::GREENE | Catmax = Catmax + 1 | Wed Feb 14 1990 09:01 | 22 |
| I use NOLVASAN, which is used by Angell Mem Animal Hospital *and*
chlorine bleach --- *at separate times*.
Nolvasan is a viricide. Can be bought through mail order in
concentrated form by the gallon...will last longer than you want
;-) I also alternate bleach and nolvasan in litter box washing.
Tend to prefer the Nolvasan because Angell uses it. gotta have
some reason, huh?
We now clean kitchen and bathroom floor with bleach...no more
household disinfectants like Pine-Sol (tho I DO love the clean
odor...HATE Lysol smell) because of concerns about kitties getting
residue on their little paws and licking it off (it is toxic to
kitty-cats).
caveat: do NOT soak fabrics with urine in bleach...wash out first,
then soak to disinfect if you like. Urine + chlorine bleach =
CHLORINE GAS. I found out the hard way. Almost sent a houseful
of holiday guests to the emergency room.
Happy scrubbing!

Since you changed/added the question, let me make one thing
perfectly clear.
Nolvasan and bleach are for disinfecting, NOT for nutritional
supplements.

| For disinfecting I alternate between a diluted mixture of either
Roccal D or Novalsan when I am not using the chlorine bleach.
My vets use all three ...but warned me about the possible toxic
effects of either the Novalsan or Roccal D when coming in direct
contact with the skin. They feel that chlorine bleach diluted with
water is effective and safer.

| I use Fresh Scent Clorox mixed with a little dawn dishwashing liquid.
I like to add the Dawn because just the Clorox and water leaves a dull
film on the floor. The Dawn seems to remove the residue.
Hey, I can't help it, I like it to look clean too!!!
And I go pretty heavy on the Clorox!

Bleach, Dawn, Bleach, Bleach, Bleach. I bet I have the whitest
sand box in Candia !! It get lighter each week !
on the cats, Dawn and Nolvasan - Cin and I use the Nolvasan flea
shampoo with conditioner, whether they need it or not. I have to
say it really leaves the cat looking great, feeling great, and
SMELLING great. A very versitile and good shampoo.
I haven't tried the Fresh Scent Chlorox yet - still got almost
a gallon of the regular.

| I have a spray bottle with Nolvasan and a spray bottle with bleach
and water. I use the Nolvasan to clean the birthing cage and the
tokyo cages. I use the bleach water to clean the litter boxes,
and other things. I also use the Nolvasan to scrub the stud room
after a visiting queen has left.
For supplements, I have used Kitty Bloom, Miscellized EFA, Linatone,
and now I am using a product called Nutriderm by Norden for most
of the cats, and a product called Lipiderm for Joui, who has a skin
allergy problem.

3334.9 | Bleach + Ammonia = BLECH!! | CRUISE::NDC | Putiput Cattery - (DTN: 297-2313) | Thu Feb 15 1990 08:21 | 13 |
| re: .2 - I remember as a kid that I wanted to wash the floor in
our house and surprize my folks. I reasoned that since ammonia
and bleach were both good cleaning agents that a mix of the two
would be excellent. I also scrubbed the floor with a brush on
my hands and knees.
Couldn't understand why my throat got so soar. (Hmm... maybe
this is why I"m so eccentric....brain damage)
Anyway - this is why urine and bleach is a NO-NO too. Its the
ammonia in the urine that releases the chlorine gas.
Just a little chemistry lesson for the day.

| RE: .2 good point about the pinesol.....If a floor is washed with
something like pinesol, and allowed to dry - is it toxic
when dry (I'm assuming you mean while wet its toxic).
RE:.3 opps, it's been a very *LONNNGG* week....maybe I can change
the title.... ;^)
Okay, the manufacturer suggested I wash the 'no-wax' floor with
ammonnia (SP?) - will/could this encourage kittys to forget
their nice box habits? I think I'll call to see if bleach
is an acceptable subistitue (no not together - I know about the
gas thing). I would thinkg the bleach would take the color out
of the floor....
RE: novalsan users
If I dilute it properly and put in a spray bottle - it would make
a good box cleaner. Can I use it in her eating area? Nippa has
a way of letting me know she is unhappy with something by barfing -
I'm afraid that I am not properly cleaning the area and may leave
some microscopic bacteria/germs behind. Could Novalsan stain
carpets, floors, clothes? I can order it for about $23, is this
a good price?
Okay, I was also wondering if this would be suitable for
disenfecting a foaling area (I know this is not EQUI notes,
but you guyes seem to know a lot regarding breeding - kittens
and what needs to be done to get the area ready ect). The books
recommend using bleach (for preparing foaling areas)- but I wanted
to know if there was something better......
RE: supplements
What would pronpt you to use a supplement? I currently give
nippa Laxatone for hairballs, but I was wondering if I gave
her linatone or whatever - if it would help brighten her coat
and cut down on shedding - as the descriptions indicate they
would. She gets excellent quality food (science diet and blue
seal) - but lately her coat is dry and she's horrendously shedding
- my eyes are driving me nuts (allergies).
I do feed my horse a supplement, but it is minerals and has
selenium (and corn oil for building up some fat for the winter).
I work him hard and show him, so I am very concerned for his diet.
My vet does not recommend any vitamins for him, because he gets
more than enough in his feed. The minerals/electrolytes keep him
from tying up (basically he can't pee - leads to serious problems)
when worked - plus helps keep him hydrated, and the vet feels
our hay is lacking in selinium. Well, I was wondering if I should
use the same logic for my kitty, ie No vitimans.
thanks guyes!

Let me put it this way; I recently pulled up the no-wax floor in my
bathroom and put down ceramic tile. Now, there are two ways of mixing
floor grout, one with water, one with this stuff that looks like milk
and smells like ammonia. The stuff that slightly smells like ammonia bonds
better, so that is what I used. I kept that bathroom closed up for a
day, and about 5 minutes after I opened it, I found two of my boys
leaving puddles. I wound up keeping it sealed off for a couple of weeks
until it was ready to be sealed and even now Spiro still seems to be
attracted to one place.
Maybe if you must wash it with ammonia, you can then immediately go over
it with water to remove the smell.
By the way, I use bleach and water on my nowax floor in the kitchen and
it hasn't taken the color out. The vet told me that if I mixed one
tablespoon (bleach-capful) of bleach to one gallon of water that would
be enough to kill germs.

3334.12 | Vinegar and Water | POCUS::FCOLLINS | | Thu Feb 15 1990 13:09 | 6 |
| I believe vinegar and water is really good for no wax floors. Actually,
I've used that mixture on asphalt type tiles too and it works well.
My floor looks great and I just recently heard that vinegar and
water will also keep ants away - an added bonus.

| Nolvasan is supposed to be a germicide, fungicide, virucide, etc.
I think it would work well for foaling, but again, you might want
to ask your vet about it. I usually don't buy Nolvasan in gallons,
so $23 seems high to me. I think I pay less than $10 for a 32oz
bottle. The stuff lasts forever since you hardly use any of it
diluted in water.
One thing, once my husband ran out of bleach water, and instead
of mixing more, he poored some Nolvasan and water into the bleach
water bottle. Without rinsing it first. The Nolvasan and water
turned an awful brown color. The bottle was stained, and I ended
up throwing it out.
I use supplements that are mostly for the skin and coat. I sometimes
offer Pet Tabs to my kitties as a treat. They like them. Most
cat foods are very well balanced, and don't need to be supplemented
with vitamins.

Re: Vinegar and Water on no wax floors.
Out of curiosity, how much vinegar to how much water? I remember
my mom using vinegar and water to clean windows and I use straight
vinegar to get rid of kitty urine smell when someone misses the
box but, it never occurred to me to just wash the floors with.
Since I'm moving I could use something that would make my yucko
kitchen and spare bathroom floor look good.

Kind of a guess would be about 1/4 cup to a gallon of water. I've
never really measured. Sorry I couldn't be more accurate.

3334.18 | DON'T SMELL NO MORE AROUND HERE | DELNI::R_GASKELL | | Wed Apr 04 1990 13:42 | 20 |
| I have four cats and three litter boxes (and until recently one tom cat
who insisted on doing an impression of a pump spray until we put him on
hormone therapy). We used one product for all, "O-dur-mute" (Spelling
might be off but it's close). It's a crystal like powder and can be
used on floors, gardens and furniture. I get mine from a local feed
and grain mill (mail to DELNI::R_GASKELL for name of store) in the
Acton (USA) area. It is a bit expensive, but it takes right away that
litter box smell. It can be mixed in water to several strengths that
will handle everything from everyday washing of kennel floors to
clearing up skunk spray on gardens, pets and humans. I have not
found it to harm any of the above when I have used it.
