| Thanks for the info... I was just talking with "Dr. Miggy" yesterday
and she didn't mention the show. Probably because we were preoccupied
with Barney's reoccurrance with FUS.
I can't wait for the show. Think I'll tape it.

3326.4 | Yes, it will be a nationwide broadcast! | BOOKIE::FISCHER | | Thu Mar 01 1990 12:49 | 16 |
| Yes, the "Cats and Dogs" special will be broadcast nationally! Whichever
PBS stations pick it up will air it sometime between March 3 and March 12,
during the PBS pledge drive.
The segment featuring service dog team Teddy and Kendrick is last in the
show. The other segments include the following:
o The first veterinarian visit of a litter of pups and a litter of kittens
o The 1989 CFA Cat's Plain & Fancy Show at the Boston Marriott
o New pet care products for the 1990s
o Obedience training with animal behaviorist Ray McSoley
o How to choose what is the right puppy or kitten for you
I hope you will all get the chance to catch one of the broadcasts. Enjoy!

I caught the special on Ch. 2 : Some thoughts-
At the cat show - are all show cats as passive as those? My cats
would be struggling to get away (probably drawing some blood) if a
sleazy looking guy grabbed them one handed by the chest and twirled
them around in the air! Was that typical behavior, both cats and
judge?!
I loved Dr. Migday's reaction to the Maine Coons! No wonder she
wanted one herself. What a neat lady! (Wouldn't mind meeting her
socially.) - Chris
ps. My contract may not be renewed, so I'm holding off on getting
Copy II 'til I'm sure of my financial situation. Vanessa is gorgeous
in her winter coat. Bet she starts shedding soon. - C

| Chris, I wish I could have caught that special! I was in Boston,
showing my Birman cat, Murdock. Did you see any sealpoint cats
with white feet? Maybe we were on the air! We were benched next
to two lovely Maine Coons, a silver tabby and a brown tabby, both
neuters participating in the premiership class.
In answer to your question, some show cats are extremely mellow
and love all the attention, others do not. Personally, I would
not show a cat that didn't enjoy it, that is why I stopped showing
Kelsey, my Ragdoll cat. He was very nasty both in the rings and
in the benching cage. However, most show cats are very mellow because
their owners prepare them for shows at a very young age. Kelsey
was taken out at 1 year, and because he had never left the house
(except to see the vet) or wasn't used to lots of commotion and
strangers around him, became very stressed out at the shows. Of
course some older cats take to the show scene like they've been
shown all along -- personality has a lot to do with it too, just
like with people.
Most judges are gentle in their handling of the cats, although I
have seen some who were not so gentle, and ruffled the feathers
of some of the most mellow cats (and owners).
Yes, the Maine Coons are wonderful.... and on my "someday" list
of cats.

| re: .5
Some cats take to being shown, some don't. Personality is
especially important with the Household pets. I entered Dundee
and Mao in my first show. Mao is 10 yrs old and Dundee was
just 11 months. Dundee doesn't love showing, but he puts up with
it like a real trooper. Mao on the other hand H*A*T*E*D it. She
growled and hissed and when I went to take her out of the cage
for her third ring she snapped at me. I don't think she had any
intention of actually biting me, but she wanted me to know how
upset she was.
Like Roberta said, its no fun showing a cat that doesn't want
to be shown. For that reason Mao was pulled after two rings and
hasn't been back since.
We're thinking of showing Bob. I"m going to bring him up to
Hudson to see how he reacts to the environment. Sometimes you
can't tell without putting them in the situation.
It is best to start with young cats.

| Elaine,
The part on the cat show was from this year!!! I saw it, and in fact,
remember seeing them film parts of it. They took the pictures right
next to Lynn's Himmy Gizmo....in fact, in the pan that they did of the
background, I noticed my mint green curtains. They were benched almost
across from Roberta, Nancy and Linda Sobek.
Actually, I couldn't really see much of the mint green curtains because
Lynn's cage was so covered by rosettes....caught a glimpse of my
grooming table (4 wheeler) too.

| In fact, they showed Nancy Sullivan's Sulltan's Stuffed Animal taking
best cat, Melinda Webster's Burmese taking Best Alter, and also the
Best HHP....Don't remember seeing Best Kitten!
They filmed Walter Hutzler's ring!

| Not all of it was THIS year. The 4.5 month old JBT was a year ago
cause she is now 16 months old!! Adana belongs to Sherri Mitchell
in Plaistow, and they asked my friend Lauren to show Sherri's JBT
cause Sherri was at another show elsewhere, and Lauren declined,
so Melinda Webster did the bit on the JBT. That part was last
year, and I"m not sure what all else - maybe they combined the
two shows or something.
