3310.0. "She's Developed an Unusual Taste????" by SANFAN::FOSSATJU () Tue Feb 06 1990 13:53

I was just wondering if any of you out there have this *problem*.
Pippin just loves to chew, lick, play and eat (if we don't rescue
them in time) photographs - there is something about them that drives
her crazy. I can't seem to leave one out without finding teeth
marks all over it and half the ends missing. Last night she spotted
two small ones that I had put up on the mantel and just about inhaled
them by the time I got to her. Oh, she also likes to lick envelopes
and stamps. Richard said she ate two stamps out of the desk drawer
the other day before he could get to her.

Do you suppose it could be something in the photo-finishing process
that gets her crazy (doesn't seem to affect the other two)? It
makes her crazier than catnip. Could this be harmful?

3310.2 whiskey, toooooPOCUS::NORDELLTue Feb 06 1990 15:3013
Yes, my altered, declawed male, Whiskey leaves teeth marks on photos
where ever he can find them, particularly after my daughter leaves
them on the floor. I, too, cannot understand what the attraction
is but he just seems to bit them; not eat them. He doesn't bother
with any other kind of paper left around, just photos. He is due
for his checkup and I intend to ask the Dr. about this.

I always thought he was just "weird" and after having cats all my
life know that they are as different as people. It's good to know
that he doesn't need a "psy'cat'ologist" since other felines partake
    of this unusual habit.

I have the same problem with 2 of mine that like to lick the "linings"
of trash bags. You know when you put one in a wastebasket and have the
top portion turned down and around the rim of the basket. I can chase
and scold them for it and two minutes later they're right back doing it
again like they're addicted to the coating. These are "Glad Trash
    Bags".

    poisonous.

Guess I'll have to keep the photos out of sight until I talk to
    the VET.

BUT she also goes after the covers of paper back books as well and
likes to chew on nails and wire (oh boy)!

    Thanks,

I remember meeting a cat who would snatch any kind of paper money that
was left out and chew on it -- any kind of paper, actually, but the
trick was most impressive when performed with money.

A cat that I used to have *loved* to chew on emery boards -- couldn't
keep them in the house without finding them shredded.

3310.9Lily & Sheba lick photos tooLYMPH::SWANTCan't get away from basicsWed Feb 07 1990 17:509
    Lily (4-years, like a blue-point Birmin) and Sheba (1 1/3 years,
red Abyssinian) both love to lick photographs also -- then they
chomp them with their little teeth and leave little pointy marks.
Sometimes I find part of a corner gone or only a corner left.

I am sure it must be toxic else why would they do it -- just to
make sure you have enough to worry about?

Geez, I thought I had the only looney cat that liked to chew photos.
Carrie has been doing this for a while now. I put them away and
she goes and digs them out again. I can't tell you how many pictures
I have with kitty teeth marks all over them. Guess I'm going to
have to start storing the photos somewhere else.

This isn't so much a strange taste as an excellent toy - tampons!
Vitamin can sniff them out of any of my bags are they're great fun
to rip apart, chew and leave small white bits of fluff ALL over
    the place.

My Sasha loves emery boards....I have been able to get them
away from her soon enough though so that she doesn't chew them
to pieces. She'll sit there with it between her paws, sticking
straight up in the air with her teeth happily chomping on it..
I wouldn't imagine something that feels like sandpaper would be
    	much fun to chew on!

Missy comes running when I pull out one of those three-sided
nail buffers!! (one side is all grey, the other is half pink
and half white). She won't let me do my nails - she tries to
bite it and if I put it down, forget it!! It's hers! I even
give her the old ones instead of throwing them away...I really
think she is attracted to the smell from buffing my nails...

In regards to emery boards. The kittys are just sharpening their
*fangs*. The better to *bite* the hands that feed them. Also, maybe
they're filing their nails like mommy does. I mean, how else do those
    nails get SO SHARP??

    Only kidding gang.

Actually 2 of my kittys, Thunder and Lightning, LOVE Vicks Vap-O-Rub
and Bengay. I put it on, they take it off. Thunder even wraps her
front paws around my arm or leg so I won't get away. Thank goodness
she doesn't have claws. It's even more fun when I put it on my throat
or the back of my neck. She tickles me. You can hear the both of
them purring the whole time. It definitely works better than catnip on
    those two.

    Strange kittys !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    But I love them......

3310.15Yes, definitely Ben Gay!MEMIT::MISSELHORNThu Feb 08 1990 12:0726
    Sandi,

I am relieved to hear that someone else has kitties that LOVE
Ben Gay! I put some on about a year ago before going to bed and
Melody tried to eat through the sheet to get to it! Then she
started licking the sheet and blanket. I freaked out figuring
    she would poison herself.

In addition to Melody's would be addiction to Ben Gay, Brittany
loves to lick Bruce's feet at night and we just figured out that
it must be the remains of the Desenex he puts on in the morning.
Brittany also loves to lick my hands after I have washed them
    with Ivory soap.

Not only that, but Brittany's favorite toys are Q-tips and often
after she's finished playing with them, she will eat the cotton
off the end. I keep hoping that, as a natural fiber, it will
work its way out but natural means.

With all the horror stories about stomach and intestine blockages,
it's gotten so I will come out of a sound sleep at the sound of
chewing. The other night I did that and it was Brittany all the
way down the hall chewing on a straw. Talk about developing
    motherly instincts!

Well, Pippin also loves emery boards. One night while using one
Gino hopped up on my lap and started going after it. Well, I thought
I would try rubbing it gently on one of his fangs and he went into
estacy! Started purrrrrring so loud it just about cracked me up.

All three of mine also go after q-tips (why bother buying toys).
After all of these replies I'm happy to find out that I'm not the
owner of three certified nut cases.

I came home one day to a trail of Stay-free MP's! Seems the bathroom
closet was left open and everyone went shopping for toys. They
also found the emery boards, the cotton balls, and cleared the shelf
of hair ties, tweezers, etc. onto the floor. I have come home to
a wet facecloth dragged down the hallway many times, the TV turned
on, the roll of paper towels in shreds on the kitchen floor, the
TP unraveled throughout the house, the bag of kitty litter torn
open and spread throughout the basement, all with four innocent
faces staring up at you. These guys will make toys of anything!!

Gee, and all I come home to are five sleepy-head cats! The only
problem I've encountered is that Murdock is on a plastic kick, and
managed to rip open every bag of dry food in the basement, plus
several of the sample packages collected at shows. All of the food
is now stored in rubbermaid containers or placed high up on shelves
where he can't climb to. He even ripped open a bag of potting soil,
thinking there would be food inside.

Stitch loves to eat/play with dry pasta and will go to any length
to open a package or box of it. Nice to come home and find pasta
strewn all over the floor, in various shapes and sizes. You don't
notice it until you walk on it and hear it CRUNCHING under your
    feet.
