I just was reading in a previous note (and it has been
discussed in other notes) about the transmitter devices
on collars that activate kitty doors to prevent other
animals from frolicking in the house via a cat door while
one is gone. That sounds ok to me sofar but, I have a
question and was wondering if anyone here has tried it
out personally and seen results? What if your cat is
REALLY COOKING towards the cat door? I will be getting a
cat door this spring or summer for Catnippy. Right now
she can only go out when I am home and so I watch for her
at the door and open it if I see the tail frizzed and she
is running (she likes to do that to see if I am paying
close attention to her activities). I would hate to get
one of those for her only to have her 'bonk' herself and
find poor Catnippy laying outside with Excedrin headache
number 89 or worse. Also, my other big worry (I do that alot,
it's a personality defect, I'm sure) is about the collar.
We have TONS of scrub oak all over the place and she is forever
climbing and zooming around. Will it break away if she needs
it to? If it breaks away in that forest out there, is it
replaceable? Comments would be appreciated. Still checking
our options here. I may just have to purchase more cat food
and let the critters come in...

We have an electronic cat door. First, the tag on the collar is NOT
a transmitter - it works by induction. We invested in the door
because we had a lot of probs with other cats coming in. After the
door was fitted, they could not get in, but it didn't stop our two
getting chased to the door! There was absolutely no problem with them
racing up to the door and getting in. Percy actually used to come in
WEARING the old cat door cos he'd hit it so hard!! Very amusing but
not very practical!!!! The new door is tougher!!
Re: collars. We use felt collars with an elastic strip around the
buckle, so if the collar gets caught, it stretches and the cat can
get his head out. We don't put the collar on tight in the first place
either. You can get replacement tags direct from the manufacturer -
you get a card in the box to send off. It is much cheaper to get them
direct, but you can sometimes get them in the pet shop. Percy has
only lost his collar once in 2 years, Pookie is more careful!
I live in the UK, but these doors are probably all the same!
I hope this helps.
Lisa plus Percy and Pookie.
