the stuff is great to use. just watch out for eye irritations, though.
my stanley proved to be verrrry allergic to a copycat (no pun intended!)
brand put out by a local pet supply store. he developed severe corneal
abrasions in *both* eyes as a result. now that i have switched over to
a different kind of filler (kitty litter brand), we have had no further
trouble.

| Okay, I've been thinking of switching to the Everclean for my male
cats, since they don't share boxes with anyone else I wouldn't have the
problems with the urine balls getting broken up. I figure if I can
remove the smelly male odor, it will help greatly, but I'm concerned
about problems with the eyes.

3299.3 | I didn't like it; the cats were thrilled! | FSHQA1::RKAGNO | A Cat Makes a Purrfect Friend | Thu Feb 01 1990 15:23 | 13 |
| I used Everclean for -- oh -- about 3 to 4 months and found it to
be nothing but a mess. The cats thought it to be great fun (wow,
mom, a SANDBOX!), and proceeded to dig, kick, and play with the
litter until they were ready to actually use it. It is also very
dusty, and I would get "short-breathed" after cleaning the box.
I figured if it was wreaking havoc with my breathing, imagine what
it is doing to the cats, and switched back to Tidy Cat 3, our regular
brand.
I'll always use Tidy Cat. It is dust-free, and I can still remove
the clumps of wet urine with the scoop. Regular mixings of baking
soda help keep odor to a minimum until the next box change.

| I have been using (excuse me - BENJ has been using) Control litter.
It's the only smell-concealing litter I've ever been able to find.
Myself, I use Kleen Kitty...

| Hmmm... I forgot about a reply I read ages ago about cats playing in
the Everclean. That's something to consider. Also the dust part. My
husband complains every time I change the litter because of the dust
and the litter I use is supposed to be dust controlled. The reason I
thought of switching to Everclean is I'm basically lazy and am tired of
changing the litter all the time; also because I'm 6 months pregnant
and am not supposed to change the litter (a current sore spot with me
and my husband).
Thanks for your comments. I'll probably try the Everclean and see what
happens.

| Re -.3 We've always used Tidy Cat, too, due to eye problems, and I
just recently discovered a new version called 'Tidy Cat MC' or
something like that - it's their multi-cat formula, and is only about
20 a bag more than the regular stuff. My son, our resident cat-box
changer, said he noticed that the MC version smelled less strongly on
changing, so I may start using that regularly.

| Well, I'm one of the people using Everclean that really likes the
stuff. Our boys played with it at first, but they seem to have gotten
bored with that game, and just use it normally. It does tend to track
a little, but a scrap piece of carpet under the box has taken care of
that problem. The best part, of course, is the lack of smell. We
haven't noticed any allergy problems or been particularly bothered by
dust. Just my $.02! :-)

3299.8 | Veterinary Opthomologist says it's okay. | IAMOK::GERRY | Home is where the Cat is | Thu Feb 01 1990 16:55 | 17 |
| That's why I'm considering it with my males. They don't play in their
litter, Max does like to sleep in his once in a while. Stripees won't
even scratch to cover, never mind play!!! Good thing I love him!!
With a whole male, unless you change the cat box every day, there is
always male cat smell.
I called Dr. Bachrach's office today to discuss Everclean, since
Stripees has glaucoma, and currently is healing from a corneal
abrasion. Dr. Bachrach's office recommended it highly, and said, in
fact, they use only everclean in their clinic. I have an appointment
for Stripees next week with Dr. Bachrach and I'll discuss it further
with him before investing in the stuff. I'll let you guys know what I
find out.

3299.9 | | CIRCUS::KOLLING | Karen/Sweetie/Holly/Little Bit Ca. | Thu Feb 01 1990 19:29 | 7 |
| Sweetie has a respiratory problem which the dust from the
Everclean made worse; it is now a no-no at our house.
The vet's guess was that the problem stemmed originally from a
reaction to flea powder, but he emphasized that that was just a
guess. I am somewhat suspicious myself that the Everclean
may even be the original source of the problem.

3299.10 | Messy, dusty vs no odor! | SALSA::DEFRANCO | | Mon Feb 05 1990 13:31 | 12 |
| I tried EverClean a few months ago and I couldn't wait to get rid of
the stuff. Maybe my 3 cats do a lot of digging, but I had litter from
one end of the house to the other. Granted, I have tile floors so
everything shows up, but then again I wouldn't want this stuff sinking
into my carpeting either. I also had dust so heavy that I had to WASH
my furniture every week. It was beyond just dusting it off!
Maybe the Agway brand will be less dusty. I have to admit that with
EverClean, there was absolutely no odor! I suppose if you have a
"whole" male, this one very good point may outway the negatives!

3299.11 | | CONFG5::AYRES | | Tue Feb 06 1990 16:45 | 19 |
| Last week-end my daughter and I purchased two gallons of Ever-clean
- the sales clerk said that she had three cats - and that it was the
best thing since sliced bread (her exact words...I might add)! I
had heard about it - and read some articles about it...so decided
to give it a try.
Otis (8 month old 15 lb. kitten) thought he was at Hampton Beach
and proceeded to play with the 'sand'...as I was scooping it up
off the rug trying to put it back in. That stuff is EXPENSIVE...
$10.00 a gallon! He never considered going to the bathroom in the
stuff, it was too much fun! Tiffany, our two year old, REFUSED
to use the litter box and went on the carpet in the dining room
(of ALL places...)!
So, we switched (FAST) back to 'Control'...and called the 800
number (on the container) and explained to them that both cats
refused to use it. They are sending us a refund.
Well...atleast we gave it a try.

3299.12 | I Had no Success Either | LYMPH::SWANT | Can't get away from basics | Wed Feb 07 1990 18:12 | 26 |
| Why not give it a try? Some people have great success -- but I
am not one of them.
I dislike it intensely for the tracking problem. The fur
in between the little cat toes just tracks it everywhere even with
a carpet outside the box at my house.
Also, with three cats it was too expensive. By the time I
scooped all of the wet spots there was little left at the end of
the week so I had to add a lot more.
It developed a bad smell after two weeks. When Sheba goes she
digs to China before and covers the world afterwards -- so her
wet spots can't be scooped. The urine is evenly distributed
throughout. Also the smell from covered and distributed fecal
material is held by the sand.
I scoop several times in a morning, right after work, and again
before bedtime. But even with three cat pans and this amount of
scooping, the smell was not pleasant.
On the good side: my cats loved it to pieces -- used it
immediately and refused to use the pans with regular liter. But
I gave it up as a bad cause.
