3282.0. "New human baby and cats " by SHADO::ARVIDSON (NONE shall pass!) Wed Jan 24 1990 18:15

My wife and I are expecting a new addition to the family, the human kind,
and are concerned about having ourselves, the new baby and Emily in the
bedroom all night.

If possible we'd like all of us to be able to sleep in the same room. Has
anyone solved this problem? Any ideas?

We'd like Emily to be as receptive to the new addition as possible, kicking
her out of our room when the new one comes along won't foster receptivity.

Thanks,
Dan

I feel like a dummy for asking this, but am I missing something?
What problem is there with you all sleeping in the same room?

I think the base noter means all those stories about the cat sleeping
on the baby and smothering it. I have never actually heard of this
happening, but with a new baby, no-one really likes to take the
risk. I don't see any problems, but would recommend that you get
a cat-net (or fix one up yourself, just for your own peace of mind.
We got one when my little sister was born and never had any trouble
    with cats.
I'm inclined to believe that this story is just an old wives tale
    anyway.

Congratulations on your new family member and I hope that all goes
    well for you.

See the last few notes in 415...an ongoing discussion has talked
about the supposed problems and some solutions.

I just read an article, by a vet, which claimed the cat/baby
thing was an old wives tale....I'll enter it tomorrow if I remember.

I hadn't heard the old wive's tale (digression: there ought to be
a Gary Larsen cartoon about where old wive's tales come from! :-),
but am concerned in general...cat jumping up and poking in the cradle,
the possibility of the cat scratching the new addition, etc.

	Just general concerns and suggestions,
Thanks for the pointer to 415, I'll check it out,

	Dan

I think that the more accurate term is "old HUSBAND's tale". :-)

I know this will be a real concern for me when we decide to have children.
I often wake up in the middle of the night to find Peaches draped across
my chest! I don't think an infant would be strong enough to withstand
that weight on its little chest.

It may be an old wives' tale, but I fear there's an element of truth to it...

3282.8GIVE THEM BOTH A CHANCE!LUDWIG::COSTAFri Jan 26 1990 09:368
it probably was cribdeath the poor babies died of in the old days,
and the cat got blamed for it. But I would not want the cat to
jump into the baby's crib or bassinet. The cat is OK, but please
give the child a chance. Let them both get used to each other, slow
but sure, so neither would hurt the other. After all your baby
does not know what will hurt the cat, and the cat may just be a
    little jelous!

After two babies with five cats simultaneously, I can say I
never had a problem at all. The cats will be very curious, naturally,
but there was never any problem with the "smothering" legend.

The cats' curiosity ebbed after a couple of weeks, and they
accepted each baby (one in '85, one in '88) in turn. It seemed
to me as though the cats instinctively knew that the little humans
were here to stay, and I also found the cats dealt with that in
one of two ways: one, stay the hell away from it; or two, be very
patient and protective of it. On odd occasions I'd find one cat
sleeping with the infant in the crib, but not all that often.

I don't think you'll have anything to worry about, unless the
baby is born with allergies (God forbid). I wish you much joy with
your newest addition. I'm sure you'll all get on splendidly.

3282.10I'm expecting and am not worryingMIVC::MTAGMon Jan 29 1990 07:5817
I am expecting my first baby around the end of May and have 3 cats who
usually sleep with us. I have no fears about the cats and the baby,
one because I don't intend on having the baby sleep at all in my room.
He/she will, from day 1, sleep in his own crib in his own room. The
only cat I would be concerned about is Benjamin, and he goes where ever
I go so this should not be a problem. I've heard all the stories -
cats lying on babies and smothering them; babies choking on all the cat
hair; something about babies losing their sight - I don't believe any
of it. Cats are smart animals and I think will leave the baby alone.

One thing to do, and I know it will be tough - remember to continue to
give you little furfaces lots of love. They are members of the family
    too.

    Just my opinion.
