3233.0. "Pseudo-Manx Cats!!" by COMICS::WARNES (Capitulation in the face of defeat.) Thu Jan 11 1990 09:47

    I know the subject has been dealt with partly before, but I'm
    interested to here from any cat owners with cats that have
    lost their tails thru accident or otherwise. The reason is that
    I obtained a cat some 18 months ago from a rescue centre and he
    came minus the all-important 5th limb. The centre were unable to
    enlighten me on what had happened, only that the vet they used
    had performed 2 operations - the first to remove approx of the
    tail, the second to reduce it still further (to approx 2 inches)
    because of poor healing.

    Hence I'd be interested in the sort of injuries/ailments that can
    cause this action to be taken.

    BTW: Fudge is a very happy settled cat with excellent balance and
         lives with my other "tailed" cat without the slightest sign
         of jealousy !

    Thanks for any replies

    	Sometimes an accident can cause a broken tail which
    	also severs the nerve. Since nerves don't regenerate,
    	the tail would hang uselessly and amputation is the
    	best solution. Serious abcesses which can cut off the
    	blood flow to the rest of the tail and cause gangrene
    	can also be a reason for it...They learn to live without
    	it, I wouldn't worry about it if I were you...

    A breeder I know accidently backed his rocking chair onto the tail
    of one of his 9 week old kittens. The tail dislocated. The vet
    didn't bother to splint the tail, just told the breeder that the
    tail would heal on it's own. When I came over and saw that the
    tail was hanging at a right angle, and the blow flow was restricted,
    I took the kitten to my vet, who ended up having to dock the tail
    due the the end of the tail dying from lack of blood flow.

    I have also heard of a cat that had an abcess on his tail that wouldn't
    heal, and eventually became so infected that the tail had to be
    removed in order to save the cat's live.

    Glad you cat is getting along well without his.

3233.3Cars are not a cats friend...BOOVX2::MANDILEThu Jan 11 1990 16:338
    The number one culprit of de-tailing a cat;
    The car! Cats crawl up inside near the fan
    belt area for the warmth, and when the car gets
    started up, the fan belt......(you can guess from here)
    Also, if the tail gets broken, they may remove
    the part of or all of the tail injured.

3233.4How one cat uses her tail TPMARY::TAMIRACMS design while-u-waitFri Jan 12 1990 11:2411
The "Today" show this morning did a story about cheetahs. They had the most
gorgeous creature named "Angel" on the set. She sure was cute. Should have
heard her purr....

Anyway, Jim Fowler mentioned that cats in the wild use their tails as
rudders, so unless your cat is gonna run at 40 m.p.h. or swim the seas,
he or she is probably gonna adapt to life with out it.

...I wonder what size litter box Angel uses????

    [off the subject] The zoonooz calendar for this year features animal
    babies. January is a snow leopard. That's cute.

3233.7Watch Out for Recliner ChairsSANFAN::FOSSATJUMon Jan 15 1990 14:3710
    Also be very careful with recliner chairs - tails and more important
    parts can be damaged or lost while your bringing the chair to an
    upright position - not noticing the cat is hanging about the metal
    hinges. My mom had a close call with her guy when he was just a
    kitten and the foreleg was badly sprained - thank god my dad reacted
    quickly and reclined backwards rather than full forward when he heard
    Alfie cry out.

    Bumpy-tail was obviously born this way. Her tail is about 1/2
    normal length and curls like the top of a violin at the end.
    We suspect she's part or all manx.

    My Breeder told me that Dundee-mommy-cat once bit the tail off one
    of her kittens. The kitten happened to be pick of the litter so
    Tony wasn't real happy about it, but DMC is a very good mommy
    otherwise.  (And a real doll)
