3188.0. "I lost another one........" by SHARE::WESTON () Tue Jan 02 1990 08:27

    New Year............started off with tears.

    I lost one of my strays, again. A kitten. It's getting very hard for
    me, lately. I saw her in my dog house the day before yesterday. She
    wasn't afraid of me, and was barely moving. Looked very sick. This
    has happen to another kitten about 2 years ago. Just went in my dog
    house and died. I tried yesterday to hand feed her cat food with a
    little asperin in it. Some, will say I shouldn't play doctor, but in
    many cases, this has worked..........but she wouldn't eat. I knew she
    would die and last nite I check the dog house out with a flash light
    and she was dead. The other cats really wouldn't go in, one kitten was
    kinda with her. Then............I cried. I feel very helpless with
    them. I just can't run out and get medicine, I also can't afford a
    doctor for every stray. I just want a miricle I guess.... homes for
    all of them or at least..............someone to open a Humance Society
    soon, that will have help $$ wise and donations too.

    Excuse me.......I'm very upset and I know I'm not the only one, not
    with all I read here and hear about. My husband, sick and all, got her
    for me and boxed her........this might sound strange, but we have
    another one that was hit about a month ago and we put them in a box
    together, they are frozen till we can burry them in my PET SEMETARY in
    our woods. I just can't throw them out. I have plaques for each. My
    dog is there and my mom's cat, and now........5 strays.

    I named her SMUCK-FACE, she was one of the 6 month old kittens, black &
    white with a crooked mustache. I just hope she didn't suffer.

    Thank you for the opportunity to let things out here. I will, still
    enjoy the others till a solution comes about.

3188.1So sad ...XNOGOV::LISATue Jan 02 1990 08:548
    You did your best - nobody could do better than that.
    Try and stay happy for the others - they appreciate your help!

    Sorry,

3188.2I'm so sorry ...AIADM::FEASEAndrea Midtmoen FeaseTue Jan 02 1990 08:5812
         There's only so much you can do, can't save every kitty, but I
    know how much it hurts. One of our turkeys is sick, but we can't get
    near her, the others are protecting her by placing themselves between
    her and us, and we can't get near her to crate her (they roam free on
    our island). It hurts to see her suffering, but there's nothing we can
    do ...

         I think the idea of your pet cemetary is lovely.

         My deepest condolences ...

    She knew you were there and trying to help her. She came to you in the
    end. Don't give up. I just found a stray (I think) last night. I was
    going to pick up my daughter at 10 PM and this cat came running over to
    me crying. It was sooooo cooolld. I got some dry food for her and
    tried to coax her into the closed-in porch area. She did come in but
    panicked when I closed the door. I had to let her back out. I felt so
    bad letting her back out but she was soooo scared. When I came back
    from picking up my daughter the cat was gone but so was the food.

    Keep up the good work. For every one you lose, there are many that you
    have helped in some way.

    Sandi, mom to THUNDER, LIGHTNING, STORM & DEJAVU too.

3188.4Aspirin?AIMHI::SJOHNSONTue Jan 02 1990 14:528
    Geez, it could be anything. Possibly Leukemia? I have also read in a
    couple places that aspirin could be hazardous to cats for some reason.
    I'll check w/ my Vet on Friday. I would go easy on the doses anyway
    in the future.

    I'm so sorry to hear about the loss. You tried your best and she knew
    that.

    Boy, what a week.

    It is hard, especially seeing a kitten pass on. It *must* get very
    frustrating taking care of strays - and all the emotion that goes with
    it - the helplessness. You are a good person for taking these babies
    under your wing and you should feel good in knowing that you are doing
    the best you can - and more than most people would do.

    Bless you and may you find strength.

3188.6It's had to loose someoneBRAT::JOSEPHSONWed Jan 03 1990 12:3516
    So very sorry about your loss. You are such a kind person to care
    for the unwanted kitties and to lose them is such a hard thing to
    go through.

    I share your feelings and only wish everyone cared as much as the
    wonderful people in Feline Notes do. It would certainly be a better
    place for our furry friends to live.

    Consoling someone who has lost someone close to them is so difficult.
    It takes time and patience and understanding. I wish you well and
    commend you for caring so much.

    Sometimes it's so frustrating when you have no control over a situation
    and the worst happens. You did your best...I hope that helps.

    Carol,
      See if you can find an animal agency to work with you
    like Animal Umbrella is doing for me. That way you can at
    least get them for an exam, basic shots and neuter.

    Smuck-Face has been added to the Silver Lining Memorial. I think
    its particularly appropriate that his quarters gift will help fund
    the rescue of feral cats like her.
      Hang in there. Its a tough thing we're doing.

    I AM THE ONE WITH THE STRAY THAT HAS FELV. I GET THE PLEASURE
    OF DOING THAT CREEPS DIRTY WORK FOR HIM. ABOUT ASPIRIN; I HAVE
    HEARD IT CAN KILL CATS, ALSO. HUMAN MEDICATION SHOULD NOT BE
    USED ON PETS UNLESS PRESCRIBED BY THE VET. I BROUGHT HOME 2
    STARVING KITTENS THIS PAST MAY, AND NOW I HAVE THE SAME FEAR THAT
    I MAY HAVE ALSO BROUGHT HOME FELV TO MY OTHER HOUSE CATS. VET
    VISITS ARE SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND, BELIEVE ME!
    KEEP YOUR CHIN UP, REMEBER THE ONES YOU HAVE HELPED.

    	Sorry to hear of your loss. It's always an extra tragedy around
    the holiday season. At least you have the comfort of knowing you
    did everything you possibly could. All our sympathy,

    	So sorry to hear of your loss. I think that the worst part
    of losing a pet this time of year is having to wait 'till spring
    to bury them.

3188.11Aspirin feedback...AIMHI::SJOHNSONWed Jan 10 1990 16:499
    I talked to my Vet on Friday. He recommended not using aspirin on cats
    as it can be very harmful. If it must be given the doses should be
    about 1/16 th (of 1 tablet) and given once a day every other day or
    something like that. It can be as fatal as Tylenol w/ dogs. Dogs
    should get buffered aspirin. He said to avoid aspirin unless
    prescribed by your Vet.
