Both the animal shelter where I got two of my cats (Salem Animal Shelter) and my vet (Brookline Animal Hospital) made a real point of telling us that cats should *never* go outside. They both make a point of insisting that they should live inside forever. Being new to the ways of the city (I now live in Brighton) I have pretty much taken their advice. The two cats from the shelter don't seem to mind at all. Our 1st cat (Orlando) who came from the country (only a few weeks old) seems to have outside in her blood and hates not being able to go out. I did let her out about 2 years ago and she disappeared. When she turned up at a neighbors 3 days later (after I had logged many miles walking around the neighborhood) I decided that her outside days were over. Except for the upstairs porch, they have all been inside cats ever since. Is this extreem? Are the SAS and BAH being over protective? Lord knows I've seen plenty of cats run over and plenty more have disappeared or had strange deaths like Sasha. It does seem safer for them to be inside, but it sure doesn't go over too well with Orlando. What do you think? George

George, My Vet was also trying to discourage me from letting my 2 year old, previous out door cat into an indoor. His comments were that they live on an average of 3-4 years longer not to mention the chances of being hit, poisoned or running away being minimal! I feel that the cats that I have love the outdoors and I would hate to deny them that feeling. I live in a pretty safe neighborhood w/ woods behind us and we live in a culde-sac so I let my cats out. Of course they enjoy being inside in the winter. Sonia
3186.3 | Another cause. | AIMHI::SJOHNSON | Tue Jan 02 1990 12:09 | 6
Cat fights were another serious cause of death in cats. Which I never knew. I guess it has to do with the bites to the face & body that turn into abscesses (sp). Above related to outdoor cats that I heard from my Vet.
