3138.0. "The Naming of Kitties" by 2HOT::RAK () Wed Dec 13 1989 08:43

I searched for a note on naming of cats or names, but I couldn't find one,
so I'd like to start a note on possible names for kitties. I just adopted
two adorable little kitties and I want the right name for them. So far I've
come up with a couple of names from the broadway play CATS -- I liked
Cassandra and Corricopat - perhaps could shorten to Cass(ie) & Corri......
but the little babies are still a little skiddish and I'm not sure if these
names will fit them. I'd like to name them soon and start calling them
by their names so they will recognize who they are -- We don't know
exactly how old they are -- about 3 months or so. They came from a barn at
a milk farm in Milford. They are adjusting quite nicely -- best Christmas
present I've ever gotten :-)

Would you mind sharing any ideas you have with me? Might spark an idea...

Another questions (bear with me I'm new at this - thanks) Are Tricolor
Kitties what they call Callico? These are both tri's but one is more black with
gold specks and a few white marks - the other looks tricolor.

And, what's a Jerrico cat?

Thanks for any replys! Will let you know what the babies get named.

    Hi!

Congratulations on the *new additions* !!!!

Whenever I've named my cats, it was always a name that came right to
mind when I first looked at them. You end up with some rather odd names
that way, but they're always names that really fit the animals. The
first two I had were named Gremlin (aka STRIPE) and Punky. It was
something about the look in Punky's eyes that reminded me of a playful
little kid, and Gremlin was a grey and black tiger cat that had a head
just like a gremlin, later when she started to get into anything she
could, she got the nickname Stripe, after the head gremlin from the
movie. Now, I've got two other cats, one black and white, markings
exactly like Sylvester the cat, we call him Taco, just a certain funny
look that comes over his face, he looks almost Mexican. The other cat
I've got right now is a little grey tiger cat that was really roly-poly
as a little kitten, and we call her JellyBean (Beaner for short). They
are both a bundle of joy. I've got a new addition on its way to me this
    weekend too (a christmas present to myself :)) - - - he's a Maine Coon
cat kitten (about 6 months old), and I named him Sparky... he's got
this certain sparkle to his eyes when you look at him... it's hard to
describe.... other cats I've named have been Midnight (a jet black cat
that had bright blue eyes as a kitten), and Mushroom (she really was
the same off-white color of one!)... i also had a dog, purebred Golden
Retriever, and we had to think of an *original* name to use for his
papers. It was a long time ago, and since he was such a klutz, we
called him The Duke Of Hazard (it was when the show was still
popular)... we call him Duke for short.

Anyway, sorry to ramble, hope this helps! And good luck with the new
    ones !!!

3138.2*JUST A `LITTLE' STRANGEAIMHI::OFFENWed Dec 13 1989 12:3023
I have some strange names for my babies but they definitely do fit.

The first is White Lightning. She is all white with a grey streak on
her head (which has now faded).

The second is DejaVu. She is a half-Siamese calico kitty. My daughter
was taking Latin when I brought the new kitten home and came up with
the name. It was either that or Ayla from the Clan of the Cave Bear.

My third is Black Thunder (to go with White Lightning). She is all
black and loves to *thunder* down the hallway.

The fourth (and hopefully last) is Storm. She is a mostly black
tri-color collie. I will probably add Cloud to her name as in Storm
    Cloud.

The neighbors really think I am really *strange*. Whenever my three
declawed kittys get out, I stand out there in my fluffy red robe
screaming THUNDER!!!!! LIGHTNING!!!! STORM!!!!!!! oh DEJAVUUUU!!!

    re: .0
Actually, I believe the name you're looking for is not "Jerrico", but
"Jellicle". The name comes from a series of poems by T.S. Eliot,
titled something like "Old Possum's Guide to Cats" or something like that.
The play "CATS" is loosely based on this book, in that each of the cats
in the play is a reflection of one of the poems in the book. It's very
cute, and was my wife's favorite book when she was a child. We have a
copy at home, and, if people are interested, I'll enter one or more of
the poems (starting with "Jellicle Cats") here...

We decided a long time ago that Bumpy-tail is a Jellicle cat.

Somewhere amongst the notes from the past year you will find one
about nicknames that we all call our cats. That's certainly
worth reading if only for the laughs.

I think in naming cats, or even dogs, you kinda have to try the
names out on them for a few days or a week to see if they fit.
Or sometimes you can have a bunch of names, and over a period of
time try calling the cat by the name, and whichever it answers
    to--that's it!

I have three cats in my house: One is a yellow and white male manx.
I originally named him Stilgar (from the Dune books) because he
was kinda wild, but also acted like a king and leader. But because
he's a manx, and has BIG back legs, and he sits like a rabbit with
his front paws up and his ears up. And because he has so much
rabbit-soft white fur, he ended up with Mr. Bunny as a name.

My other cat is a slate grey housecat. I couldn't think of a name
for her. I thought of Pewter, and Rain, and Slate. But thought
they were all inappropriate. I called my mother, described the
cat, and we came up with Gershwin. The cat answered to the name,
    and it fits somehow.

I just got a cat for my roommate/boyfriend. She's all white with
light green eyes. He named her Tatiana. It sorta fits because
she's very feminine, and the kitty DEFINITELY needed a "winter"
sounding name. We were looking for something Russian (Siberian)
or Nordic. However, she is a trouble maker, and gets in the trash,
etc. So it may change. we've only had her a week. I wanted to
call her Guinevere because of the C,S, N song. You know the words:
"Guinevere had green eyes, like yours lady, like yours." Or Sugarloaf,
after the group that did "Green Eyed Lady". Or for some reason
Emmaline popped in my head (From the song by the group Hot Chocolate).
But I've also been calling her Squeaky because instead of meowing,
    she squeaks. So we'll see.

I used to have a cat that was black with brown and white speckles
all over. I named her Klondike (after the ice cream bars.) I had
a black kitty that was a real witch, er bitch. I named her Morgan,
after the legendary sister of King Arthur.

My dog is part Malamute. Looks like a wolf. Needed a Siberian
name. She is Malasha (a Russian name.) But because she snorts,
and always has a runny nose, and pokes you with her nose whenever
she wants anything, her nickname is Booger.

    So have fun naming yours!

Well let's see....Cary had Brandi before he and I met so
I don't know where the name came from. But you must spell
it with an "i" and not a "y". He's very adamant about that! =)
She likes to lay on her back with her legs in the air so we
call her Brandi_slut-kitty from time to time. (and she's
    	fixed!!)

Sasha just looked like a Sasha. She's a beautiful fluffy
Maine Coon/Brown Tabby (I think) and had blue eyes as a baby
but have since changed to gold and now green. Sasha is a
"sexy" name and she just thinks she's the "cat's meow"!!
She is the "bully" also. So we call her the b*tch sometimes.
    	Especially when she's terrorizing Chloe.

Chloe was named by Cary's brother who owned her before
we did. She's a blue/cream point himalayan and so she
needed a dainty feminine name. And she is very timid
so the name fits. When she's in heat we call her
Chloe-horny-kitty. She's the only one of our females that
we haven't fixed. I'll call her "Momma's pouffy kitty"
    	too sometimes.

And lastly Duke. We gave him this name because he was
the runt of the litter. And he is our sick baby but
is fighting like h*ll. So Duke is a strong name...
the exact opposite of him physically but mentally
and as far as willpower goes, it fits. His nickname
is Stinky. He has ulcers on the roof of his mouth
which gives him bad breath. Cary calls him "My
    	little guy..or my big guy"

    	It's fun!!

3138.7'The nameing of cats is a difficult matter..."TOMLIN::ROMBERGwandering aimlessly...Wed Dec 13 1989 14:2835
For the most part, all the names for my critters have come from
the bible. There were Adam, Eve, Mary, Candy (like Cain, but for a
girl, and these were Adam & Eve's kids), Able & Seth Gerbil,
Abraham, Sarah, Hagar (renamed Vanessa for the V on her forehead),
Rachel, Leah, and Laban Mouse, and Joshua (guinea) Pig. Then the
rodents all left and I got the cats. They were/are Joshua and
     Rebecca (rip) and Hannah.

In the case of the cats, especially, since you like them to at
least respond (even if it's negatively) when you call, you have to
try the name out for a few days to see if it 'fits'. Josh was
almost Tarzan, or Huck(leberry Finn) or Tom (Sawyer). Becky was
actually Becky Thatcher, but Rebecca is in the Bible, so it was
okay. The problem was Josh. I wanted something from the bible (so
scratch Huck & Tarzan) that I would consider calling an elderly cat
by, since I plan to keep these guys forever. The name also had to
be easy to say/yell, since he was always getting into trouble.
Joshua seemed to stick (things coming tumbling down!).

Hannah wasn't too hard to name. I needed something feminine,
cuz she was (is) small and dainty. I have a cousin Elizabeth, and
another named Alexa Ruth, so Elizabeth and Ruth were out. Since
there had alredy been a Mary, Eve, and Sarah, those were out too.
(I know, Josh is a repeat, but...) There's not too many girl names
in the bible. Hannah's original name was Geneva, but she looked at
me when I called her Hannah, so it stuck. She didn't look at me
when I called her anything else, including Geneva ;^). (Hannah is
kind of hard to yell with Josh, or shorten, but...her nickname is
     'clinger' or Hannah-kit.)

I guess the gist of this dissertation, is that the name has to
fit the cat. If you like the name, thats the first step. Now does
that cat like it? Does it suit their personality? Those, to me, are
the more important things. Inevitably, your kitties will end up
with several names, not all of them complementary.

Well lets see, Monroe and Winston were named for famous people,
they needed names with a lot of dignity since both came from rather
unidignified beginnings. Monroe is really President James Monroe,
and Winston's full name is Winston Churchill. Ken named Tilly,
Chantilly Lace since she is cream and white and very feminine.

Our first Birman was going to be named Joi de Vivre (joy of living
in french), but on the way to the airport, I discovered in the Birman
newsletter that someone else had used that name already. Not wanting
to copy, I chose another Jouissance, or Joui for short, which is
actually a french verb for delight. It fits her well since she
has been my delight since she arrived.

Our second Birman was quite vocal, and would just talk and talk
for no reason. We named her Kyrielle, which is french for rigamarol.
Then came Kalliste, who was named by his breeder. I can't remember
what his name means now, another noter told me once. Then came
Lyscentia, which is the greek root of the word liscentious. Believe
me, it fits! Just check out the note about her and Moody and you
    will see.

I sometimes choose names that seem incongruous. Like Moody. He
is actually Moody Blue, after the group, but we call him Moody.
Funny thing is that he is the sweetest thing you would ever want
to meet. Not the least bit Moody.

Most of my other Birmans were named by their breeders. Ken and
I seem to be following a trend of naming cats after bands, songs,
words from songs, etc. We had a Lady Sings the Blues, and a Livin
In The Wild Wild West this year (called Lady and Westie of course).
Oh, and Dreamer, AKA Midsummer Night's Dream.

I have a litter right now that are named Move and Shaker, Motion
Detector, and Major Aftershock, all for the earthquake.

After losing my first cat of 18 years, he was a Siamese, I knew
that the next one I would get would have to be completely different
    - So a friend of mine called the SPCA and told a friend who works
there to bring down all the black kittens he had to this one mobile
adopt location. Well, there she was in the back of the top cage,
shaking each time a car passed, and these huge green eyes were looking
right at me - they looked like Pippin apples - so she became Pippin.
She's not completely black anymore and her eyes can change to include
a yellow cast, but she turned out to be a Pip as well.

Gino, the second one, is Siamese and was a very LARGE kitten. We
noticed he had this kind of John Wayne swagger when he walked and
kind of reminded me of a big hood - We had seen a movie where the
"heavy" was named Gino - so the big kitten with the swagger became
    GINO THE CAT.

Stitch is our third cat and he was abandoned by his mom - and during
the night before we discovered this motherless litter, Stitch had
been attacked, most likely by a tom, so this little guy had this
cut on his neck which required 3-4 stitches - the sutures looked
so big on this tiny body - so when I got him for Xmas two years
ago - Richard decided that he would name this one - and he became
    Stitch.

I guess we really didn't have to think much about names - they just
happened - I had all kinds of names picked for Pippin but when I
saw her they really didn't fit. Sometimes that first encounter
will automatically bring a name to mind.

    Have fun!

When I first got Bailey I couldn't figure out what to call her.
Jo Ann and I went through several names and almost called her
"Sadie Painted Lady" (she's a blue-cream). It didn't quite fit
though. She was showing alot of the same characteristics of a
cat Jo Ann had recently placed in a new home; her name was Bailey.
Bailey seemed to fit her so well that I named her Bailey's Irish
Cream (because of her blue-cream color)...I call her Bailey.

Then, I got Amelia. I sort of wanted to call her Amanda but a
woman who showed cats in the same general area I do already had
a cat named Amanda. I hadn't had Amelia home very long when she
started this little game of flying through the house, taking flying
leaps at the sliding glass doors, tapping them with all four feet
(sideways..with her feet on the glass and body parallel to floor)
and running away the opposite direction. It was shortly after that
that she got the name Amelia Earhart.

When I met Carrie, I took one look at her and decided her name was
Carrie Nation. I wasn't even planning to keep her. I was trying
to find her home. Dave and I discussed calling her something like
Bonnie Blue or Lady Blue (she is grey (blue) and white) but nothing
    seemed to fit her like Carrie Nation.  It's a perfect name for her;
    she's a little rabble rouser.

                        The Naming of Cats
    			------------------

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
      It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo, or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey --
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter --
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum --
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
      And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover --
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
        His ineffable effable
        Effanineffable
    Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

    The Song of the Jellicles
    -------------------------

    		Jellicle Cats come out to-night
Jellicle Cats come one come all:
The Jellicle Moon is shining bright --
Jellicles come to the Jellicle Ball.

Jellicle Cats are black and white,
    Jellicle Cats are rather small;
Jellicle Cats are merry and bright,
And pleasant to hear when they caterwaul.
    Jellicle Cats have cheerful faces,
    Jellicle Cats have bright black eyes;
They like to practise their airs and graces
And wait for the Jellicle Moon to rise.

    Jellicle Cats develop slowly,
    Jellicle Cats are not too big;
    Jellicle Cats are roly-poly,
They know how to dance a gavotte and a jig.
    Until the Jellicle Moon appears
They make their toilette and take their repose:
    Jellicles wash behind their ears,
    Jellicles dry between their toes.

Jellicle Cats are white and black,
    Jellicle Cats are of moderate size;
Jellicles jump like a jumping jack,
    Jellicle Cats have moonlit eyes.
They're quiet enough in the morning hours,
They're quiet enough in the afternoon,
    Reserving their terpsichorean powers,
To dance by the light of the Jellicle Moon.

Jellicle Cats are black and white,
    Jellicle Cats (as I said) are small;
If it happens to be a stormy night
They will practise a caper or two in the hall.
If it happens the sun is shining bright
You would say they had nothing to do at all:
They are resting and saving themselves to be right
For the Jellicle Moon and the Jellicle Ball.

I always find a name that sounds good when hollered. Wimp names like
Princess and Darling just don't have any punch at high volume. Honey's

that's one of the reason's that I have attached "S. Pussycat, Esq"

Boy, Mary, I"m with ya on that note. If it doesn't work when
    you are screaming, who_ever_the_hell_you_are_cut_it_out, it's
a name that shouldn't be used!! For example, Ivan Ivanovich,
Yurii Andreiveich, Katenka Dolly, Alexander, PASHENKA (Shenka, when
I haven't got time to say the whole thing because he is really into
something he REALLY shouldn't be into), NIK_O_LAS (that one yells
real well), LI_LY (FlatFace), Chow_LEE - boy, some of them are
    really great screamers !!!

Hamilton Bates Farnsworth, the second ? - that's a really GREAT
name! I love it! It's a good thing my windows are closed these
last 2 weeks - must be the full moon. The kids have been real

I'm really mad at them. I hiss at them and they really RUN like
crazy - then I pick up the C.A.T. - it's all over by this time.

3138.19Pookie, where are you...XNOGOV::LISAFri Dec 15 1989 04:3912
I know someone else out there has a Pookie (her Royal Highness ?!?!?!).
How did you choose the name Pookie? I chose it because that is what
Garfields teddy bear is called. My Pookie is ginger like Garfield, but
Garfield is a boy and Pookie isn't, and anyway Garfield didn't seem very
original! Percy (also ginger and a boy) is also not Garfield for Some
of the same reasons! We just liked the name and it goes well with Pookie.

I think I've rambled a bit here! Sorry!!

3138.20How the crew came to be....SWAT::COCHRANEEthel The Ardvaark Goes Quantity SurveyingFri Dec 15 1989 09:3139
Most of mine came already rather attached to a name, but I do
    know most of the origins...

1.) Niniane. I named Niniane before I even got her. It is one
of the names given to the woman who seduced Merlin into teaching
her his art, and then locked him in a cave for 50 years.
Evidently I chose well, since Niniane has grown into the
         description quite nicely! ;-)

2.) Charm. Actually, her full name is Third Times Charm. I adopted
her from a family whose first two cats had gotten killed by
automobiles rather young. Charm was their third - hence the
name. It worked, Charm is working on nine now and is quite
         content to stay indoors.

3.) Boogie. Her registered name is "Ripus" (Rhode Island
Puss). She was also called "Lacey" as well as "Boogie".
But considering the fact that she bops around the house
with all the grace of a linebacker, we stuck with Boogie.
         She seems to approve.

4.) Dream. Registered name "I Have a Dream's Dream". Reserved,
petite, queen of the house in her own right and her own mind.
Prefers to answer to her full title. Gives speeches.

5.) Mips. I named. Stands for "Millions of Interruptions Per
Second". Seems very accurate at the moment. Goes into
litterbox and occasionally forgets why she went in there.

6.) Belle. She reminded me of a little Siamese I met when I
bought Niniane. She was the runt of the litter and her
name was Belle. They had hand-raised her, and she was
the tiniest, most affectionate kitten you had ever seen.
My Belle is also tiny, and very very affectionate. I walk into
the room and she starts purring.

I sometimes think they telepathically let you know what they want to be named....

3138.21I think we've come up with some!2HOT::RAKFri Dec 15 1989 11:1216
Well last night I think we came up with some names, I like the idea of
their names coming from CATS - I loved the show so much....

Last night the little black and gold kitten who loves pounce -- started
dancing around on her hind legs -- I blurted out
Cassandra_the_dancing_piglet! my husband and I both started laughing
-- she seems like a Cassandra -- and she always eats more than her
sister -- could be cassie for short -- the other girl, we are still
unsure about -- however we came up with Coricopat_the_Calico_Cat - my
husband wanted something that had to do with triple -- well we came up
with Triple C in the name -- so for short this could be t.c. I'd still
    call her Coricopat though......

    what do you think?

Diamond got her name from the previous owner, and we couldn't
    think of a better one.
"Catfish?" was a feral we caught with a fishnet at a friend's
house, couldn't think of a name, I still can't get close enough
to find out what sex, so I thought a gender-neutral name would be
good, as something funny might do.

Tis Moi..well I got my name from my mummy.. My real name is Simbelair's
Countess Portifiole of Valley-vu.. my "breeder" used to call me
the Countess.. I still will answer to that, but only if you whisper
in my ear .. then I sit very pretty... when I had my 1st litter
many moons ago,, my breeder gave me the nickname PUT-PUT, cuz
of the soiunds I made when I was delivering my babies,,, as well
as when I was weaning them.. When Mummy Brought me home,
she named me Pookie, which is "take off with the gaelic
word pooka.. (a gentle and sweet Irish "spirit..)
Perhaps we can have "a cuppa together sometime.. Do you know
    the QUEEN?..

Gee, Kate, I never realized that Pookie was a "simbelair" cat before.
I know we talked about her name being "countess" but I didn't realize
that she was bred by "simbelair"....no wonder she thinks so much of
herself...Simbelair cats have quite a reputation!

Cin.. yes.. now you know why Allison 'co-owned her.." .. I also
beleive that 2 of her litters were sired by Simbelar Hubby..
when I got her from Allison..I"signed an agreement" I would never,
ever show her, and Allison was quite adament" about tht. she
sadi that the "countess was to be "retired"..I wasa allowed
to transfer her papers to my name, but she was not be
shown, even for exhibition, or definitley not as an "alter
either, oe even as an apparant purebreed..Happy also
has a simbeliar grea t geanddaddy.. it was Pookies
grandfather.. so they are related.. I did try ot explain
this to Pookie.. she was not ammused,, she indicated she
felt there was AN ERROR made.. no way could she be related
to Happy.. Sigh.. every now and then.. she threatens to contact
her atty.. tee-hee.. Happy thinks it is great.. tee-hee..
just like you said Cin.. "typical smoke tortie.." of course
you realize when I got Pookie..it Dr eric to explain the Simbelair
stuff to me.. sigh..the granddady they share was a black
smoke.. I think he is called B&B... AND They also
or is it Pookie. something about JOVAN.. was I think the last
litter of Pookies.. I forget.. I also thought somewhere
in Happy ther was some Jovan too.. morelater..

Kate,

Does Pookie realize she could have had one of Allison's names, like Chicken
George, or my favourite, The Blue Nun (a blue cream female who wouldn't let
any of the boys near her). She also had a cameo boy who only had one of
his 'family jewels'; I won't say what she called him!!

Pookie sure is gorgeous!!

Is she getting her platinum card for Christmas??

Well, my babies got their names for a number of reasons.

Tabitha: She's a pure black cat the we got two weeks before halloween.
We wanted to think of a "spooky" or "witchlike" name. We thought of
Tabitha from "Bewitched". It fit her.

Silver: Actually named "Sterling Silver". She's a Korat. Her
coloring is called "Silver Blue". pretty appropriate.

P.I.T.A.: Well, most of you know about this one. P.I.T.A. actually
stands for Pain in the *SS! But her actual name is "Lady sings the
blues". She's also a Korat. The cattery that we got her from had a
theme. She wanted all of her cats named for something about a broadway
play. Lady Sing's the Blues half sister is "Jaltari's Rave Review".
The best Korat and 6th best cat in CFA last year.

Michaela: Heard it from a friend. Michaels (Micki) is a Golden Tabby
Persian. We decided that she needed a "delicate" name. It fit.

Seasea: Actually called "Leg-a-sea" was named before we got her. I
believe that all of her cats were named after horses.

Sweetie: Sweet sixteen. Named because we got him on my neice's 16th
    birthday.

Mary, I do remember the "blue Nun.. tee-hee.. Chicken George did
"approach " Her Royal Highness.. ahem.. she was not amused, as you
might weel imagined.. in Allisons words .. :she sent him packing. after
she " beat him up.. I am sure muttering Peasant and other choice
words.. Allison always referred to her as "strong willed". AHEM.
Yes , Pookie has wriiten up her list of demands.. er requests..
she sits by the door at nite when I come.. checklist in hand..
let do inventory again.. Mom.. sigh.. Happy was looking for
a "special gift" for Kittymas.. Aunt Cin and I are working
on it.. we have explained she must be very patient...
her special gift will be here soon.. Pookie on the other
does not accept" verbal promises for any reason. all promises
must be written, and Notarized, by her attorney.. and they usually
have if I am lucky a 24 hour turnaround time.. (wwekends only,
weekdays are 8 hours.. tardiness is not understood..

3138.30Ohm's LawORIENT::SANBORNWed Sep 12 1990 16:4923
We got our first cat when I was a student of electrical
engineering, hence the name: Ohm. Some students were giving
away kittens at the student union and I just couldn't "resist-her".
Among the first priorities was a food dish, also referred to as
"Ohm plate". She settled in quickly and we sometimes spotted
"Ohm at home on the range". Later on we got a second cat we named
Ampere. Amp quickly learned Ohm's law: you don't mess with Ohm.
The third cat escaped being named Volt when my math major wife
suggested a 'math symbol' name, so we came to have Pi. Then
came Mu (pronounced "mew"). Mu was an Abysinian who was fond of
green pepper pizza and beer (just the bottle caps). I still recall
the evening the paw came out of nowhere and knocked the pizza off
my fork onto the floor (guess MU had had one to many bottle caps).
Mu never came to terms with Ohm's law and finally went to live
    with our vet.....
Now there is a stray hanging around our house, a very
un-neutered adult male. He has, like one of T.S. Eliot's cats,
at least 3 names. We call him Big Balls, but in polite company
we refer to him as Big Bootes after a character in the movie
'Buckaroo Bonzai'. Lately he's begun to wear out his welcome and
we just call him Melon Head after one of his other more prominent
features.... Anyone have a home for a grey cat with white markings?
He's a little worse for wear but very flexible about names!

Perhaps you ought to scoop him up and take him to the vet. You
can easily rectify that BB problem :-) While you're at it, have
him FLV tested. After that he'll probably be much better about
    Ohm's Laws.
