This is in regards to my daughter's cat STAR. Star is a four-year old
female with a problem. I will give you some background first (for the
new people in the file).
Star was born in the wilds. She and her sister (and their Mama) were
found one day by a friend of mine. My friend could keep the Mama but
needed to find homes for the babies. She *unfortunately* described
them to me. All white, fluffy, adorable balls of furs. How could I
resist. I brought them home. My oldest daughter kept one and another
friend took the sister. Star stayed within my house-hold for about 9
months to a year. After that my daughter moved out (long story)taking
Star with her. Star was shunted from house-hold to house-hold (some
with many cats and also large dogs). She was sometimes locked in a
closet or room by herself for days. Needles to say, Star has a few
problems. She doesn't trust stranger's (me included). Star did come
back to my house for about 6 months and it took all of that 6 months to
get her to trust me. Then she went to live with my daughter and her
boyfriend (now husband).
Star has shown her displeasure by urinating on the bed or on the floor.
When Charles (husband) caught her doing it the third time, he put the
*fear of God* into her. For the longest time, Star was OK.
Now the plot (dilemma) thickens. My daughter is pregnant. Star has
now started urinating and defecating in the house again. Charles has
reached his limit. Star has to go. I talked them into a *small*
holding pattern.
Star has not been to see a vet in three years. I know she has worms
and now possibly FUS. I talked them into letting me take her to my vet
to check her out. She will be going in on Saturday and coming home on
Monday. I talked to the receptionist about Star's background. I also
asked her about OVABAN. I also warned them about the fact that she
doesn't like strangers. She is declawed so it is just the teeth they
have to watch out for.
Is there anything else I can do??? Martini, their other cat is just
the opposite of Star. He is just a big, fat layed-back Maine Coon cat.
They are eating Friskies canned and dry. I have tried to talk them
into buying something with less fat in it but they don't.
I know my daughter loves Star but just hasn't learned the
responsiblities involved with animals. I also think that Star is
trying to tell them something. They just aren't listening.
HELP,,,,,HELP,,,,,HELP

re: .56 Sandi
Sounds to me like you've assessed this situation pretty accurately.
It also sounds like your daughter and her husband don't understand
enough about cats to be able to care for a "special needs" kitty.
Perhaps it would be best if Star came to live with you permanently.
If you suspect FUS I would get the cat into the vet's right away.
If she's in pain from the infection don't make her wait until
Saturday. I've had several bouts of UTI's and I can tell you that
they are HORRIBLE! In one hour I can go from feeling fine to
doubled over in pain.
Good luck with Star and keep us posted.

Sandi,
Please excuse me if I've missed the obvious... but you seem like
such a warm, loving grandma to Star... Is there someway she could
come live with you?

| I can't take Star in before Saturday due to my schedule and my
daughter's schedule. I work a second job and she and her husband work
odd hours. They only have one car. The vet has been forwarned that
she is coming Saturday morning and she will be staying until Monday
morning. I just hope Star doesn't think she is being abandoned. It
will be her first time away from Lisa in two years. It is for a good
cause thou. I will try to remember to bring something of Lisa's with
me to the vet's. Will let you all know what transpires either Monday
or Tuesday.
Thanks for your concern. She doesn't seem like she is in pain so I am
not concerned about the wait until Saturday.
A little more info here......
Martini has been acting like a brat. He usually loves Star, his Amore,
but lately he has been attacking her. That is another reason for the
vet visit. Maybe he is trying to tell us something too.

| Star is still at the vet's. She didn't give them any *samples* over
the weekend so they are going to get some today. I have to call this
afternoon to see what they have found out. Let you know

| Star is home. The results are in. She does have a slight urinary
tract infection and definitely a bad case of worms. She got a shot for
the worms and is being given pills to clear up the urinary tract
infection. I gave my daughter some of my *special* food. Triumph both
canned and dry to try out.
So far Star is being a good girl. I just hope this helps. I will be
seeing my daughter and her husband tonight and will ask how things are
going.
Let you know what I find out.
Sandi (grandmom to STAR)
