3042.0. "Cat Shows--A Great Place to Meet People, Too!" by CIMNET::GLEBA () Tue Nov 14 1989 12:23

My husband and I went to the Marlborough cat show this weekend.
It's a great place to meet people, too!

I've been an avid reader of this notes file since we got ("adopted")
our Russian Blue, Miko, last March. I've really have learned a lot
from reading this file and promise to become a contributor. (I'll
introduce Miko to you in the Introductory notes)

We met Penny Greene and Nancy DC this weekend. The DEC Feliner
badges really help to identify you. Nancy, thanks for the badge!

    Regards,

Ruth Gleba, husband Gene, and Miko (who really owns the house from
top to bottom--from the highest shelving to the basement floors, and
    windows....etc).

Miko also curls up in a lovely cat bed made by Jo in California.

We too went to our first Cat Show on Saturday, and enjoyed meeting
    some of you folks.

Though I forgot my Feliner badge, it was easy enough to spot all of
    you there who had them!

Boy are Cat Shows interesting things! We had a good time, and
learned a lot about our "children" Jake and Jasmine.

How did you all fare with the competition??

Hi Jeff, I think I remember meeting you in Marlboro on Saturday!

That was a HUGE show! The turnout of cats was astronomical. I
have terminated Kelsey's show career as he was miserable all day.
He twice tried to jump off the judging tables and cried like a baby
in the holding cages. The judges make some funny comments to him
such as "the breed standard says that Ragdolls should sit nicely
on the table and not act up!" Good thing Kelsey doesn't bite!!
When spectators tried to admire him in the cage, he would start
to fuss and stick his head under the cat bed so no one would look
    at him.

It was a fun day and I had a blast cheering on my friends and watching
Cin's grandcat, Bailey, final in all but one ring! It was Bailey's
first show and he did great, didn't he Cin?! Needless to say, both
Karen and I will be in Haverill (me with Kirby only) for Saturday
    only.

3042.4Yeah...Bailey!IAMOK::GERRYHome is where the Cat isTue Nov 14 1989 15:5313
Yup, Bailey did really GREAT!! He made 4 finals...among them a 10th
Best Cat Allbreed, and a 2nd Best Cat Speciality. I was really proud
    of him.

Cookie, his sister made one final on Saturday ... a 4th Best Cat
Speciality, picking up about 10 Grand points, and her Top 5 Final.

It sure was fun meeting all the other feliners....however, I hate to
say it, but after meeting so many people in the same day, I'll never be
able to put a face with a name or node!!!

    cin...who had lots of fun!

3042.5I was there...HPSCAD::KNEWTONThere's no place like home...Tue Nov 14 1989 16:4523
I went to my first cat show on Saturday too. I met Roberta. I'm
glad to hear you all did so well. I was totally confused. I saw
so many blue tags on different cages I got so confused. I thought
there was only one first prize given and so on.

The cats were absolutely beautiful. I never saw so many in one
place before. I would have liked to have taken home quite a few.

The prices on cat stuff was really good to. I picked up a kitty
tease (which Snuggles & Tigger absolutely love), a pet kennel, and
    a cat scratching box.

I'm definitely going to go to another one.

BTW, I had never really seen a maine coon cat before, but some of
them reminded me of Snuggles. I think it was shape of the face.
Snuggles also has the same type of fur, but I don't think his tail
is as fluffy. He's all cream with just a touch of tabby markings
on his forehead. I wonder if he could be part maine coon.

Anyway, I had fun and congrats to all the kitties that won.

re: .3 - Send me your mailstop. I have to make more. I even
gave my own away cause I ran out :-)

It sure was nice to see everyone. Dundee didn't final at all
so meeting everyone brightened up an otherwise disappointing day.
I'll be in Plymouth this Saturday.

Hey Roberta! At least folks got to see 3/4 of Kelsey. Most folks
didn't even realize that Dundee was in his cage because he spends
all his time UNDER his catbed. sigh...
      Nancy DC

3042.7Dundee is terrific in my book!FSHQA2::RKAGNOA Cat Makes a Purrfect FriendWed Nov 15 1989 08:4919
Nancy, I'm really surprised that Dundee doesn't suffocate under
there! I'm sure people walk by and wonder why you have such a nicely
decorated cage --- and no cat!!

Well, those judges were blind in my opinion! I would have finaled
Dundee!! Maybe they will open up their eyes in Haverill... besides,
only 2 of the judges that were in Marlboro will be in Haverill.
The rest I have never heard of.

Question for you experienced showers: I have entered only Kirby
in Haverill and paid extra for a double cage. I would like to bring
Kelsey along just to sit in the cage and keep him company but not
to show. Can I do that? My husband feels I should be able to since
I paid extra for the double cage but I think they will make me pay
    extra to have Kelsey along.

    Thanks,
    Roberta

3042.8It's okay!IAMOK::GERRYHome is where the Cat isWed Nov 15 1989 09:0114
    Roberta,

You can bring Kelsey as long as he isn't For Sale. Often "For Sale"
cages are a little more expensive than the price for a Double
Cage...even though it's the same space your getting.

I think the general rule is 1 cat or 2 kittens per "single"...which
would mean 2 cats or 4 kittens per double.

Don't make a big deal of announcing that you have Kelsey there, and
nobody will even notice anyway. But it would still be alright!

    nancy...

i just received my feliner dec badge and it is bee-yoo-tiful! another
cat owner in my desktop group is jealous!

thanx so much for cheering me up in an otherwise rotten week. poor
stanley suffered a corneal abrasion (we think stella caught him with a
claw). i noticed this monday night when i got home from work, the poor
boy was walking around "pie eyed".

i hoped it was just an irritation, but took him to the vet tuesday
morning anyway. turned out to be a bad abrasion. vet sayz there will
be some scar tissue. i hope it doesn't affect stan'z vision. i was
scared that surgery might be required, but vet said "no". stan got a
shot of antibioticz in his rump, and i got this tube of gunk to put in
his eyez (both eyez, the vet said, so stan won't know which one to rub.
stan is not that stupid, said i...)

i feel better getting that out. i was feeling so guilty at not keeping
the catz' clawz clipped like i should...

diane & stella (still the h*llcat) & stanley (recovering with the
    shadez down)

    re: -1
Diane - Even if you kept their claws trimmed a scratch to the
eye would have done as much damage. I don't think trimmed
claws would have prevented this. Bumpy has had abraded cornea
before and I trim their claws.

Be real faithful about that medicine. And the alternative to
putting it in both eyes is for Stanley to wear an "Elizabethan
collar" to keep him from rubbing his eyes. Bumpy had to wear
one once. First she tried to back out of it - all over the
apartment. Then she'd try to walk forward and the bottom
edge would catch on the carpet and she'd end up on her nose.
It was all I could do not to roll around in hysterics. Poor
Bumpy!! I finally started taking it off when I was around to
    supervise her.

On the West Coast, there is a special fee for cats that are not
competing in the show. It is called "for exhibition only" and the
fee is usually less than the cost of the double cage. So, you enter
one cat for competition and one for exhibition, and then don't have
to pay for a double cage. We aren't allowed to bring any cats that
aren't listed in the show catalog (the exhibition only cats are
listed in the show catalog), it is against CFA show rules, but we
do it anyway, you just have to be sneaky about it, and not make
a big deal out of it.

3042.13time for the medzCSCOA3::MCFARLAND_Djust call me dunwoody diWed Nov 15 1989 14:5815

    nancy...

thanx for the consolation. i have no problem being scrupulous about
the medz. (except doc said "3 timez a day" and i work 10 hour dayz. so
i do it in the morning before i leave, and in evening after i get home.
maybe i should do it again before bed? that is only 3 hourz later,
    though...)

i have seen the eliz. collarz. they look soooo funny. it would be tuff
*not* to laff, but then that would wound the poor cat'z dignity even
more than wearing the bloody thing!

    Nancy,

I too would like a DEC feliners badge. Any chance I could get one
before Haverhill since I will be there with my girl??

I too got to meet several DEC feliners that I have otherwise conversed
over the tube. It is nice to put a face to a screen???? :^)

3042.15Please bench us with the other Feliners!ISLNDS::SOBEKWed Nov 15 1989 15:4720
One of the big fringe benefits of showing has been a chance to get
to meet alot of our DEC Feliners. It's alot more fun when you have
people you know and like to share the excitement of the shows. There's
never a dull moment when you are trying to cheer on all the entries
that we all feel are partly "ours" because of knowing them through
    Feline.

I had a great time introducing Magic to all you Feliners that stopped
by to say hello ....and share my pleasure when Magic got 4th Best
Kitten in the two Long-Hair specialty rings! Wins are more fun and
losses less disappointing when you get to share them with others
    in our Feline family.

Hope you other Feliners will be able to get to some shows in the
future ...and be sure to introduce yourselves to the rest of us.
Our feline and Feline family just keeps growing!

    Linda :^)

Thanks for the offer Jan. I have to make more anyway so why
don't you hold on to the extras. Then when someone from the
West coast wants a badge they won't have to wait for it
    to cross the country.
So if there's anyone from the West Coast who wants a badge,
    send mail to SCRUZ::CORDES_JA.
