How about one of you Brits educating us Americans? We don't know
who Guy Fawkes is let alone why he has his own holiday!!

| Guy Fawkes was a Catholic in James I reign. The story goes that
he and a band of other Catholics plotted to assasinate the King
and Parliament. They hid Gunpowder in the Cellars of the Houses
of Parliament and were going to blow the King sky high.
This plot was discovered and Guy Fawkes was caught redhanded in
the cellars. He was tortured and the rest of the gang rounded up.
Guy Fawkes was hung, drawn and quartered along with his fellow
conspirators (I think), and we 'celebrate' this by having bonfires
with a 'Guy' on top and letting off lots of Fireworks (Gunpowder,
you see).
That is the story in a nutshell.
Unfortunately, all this celebration upsets the animals. We used
to have to move our rabbit from the bottom of the garden every year
because the other kids on our estate had a bonfire just over the
fence. The bonfires are built up, sometimes weeks in advance, and
they provide a nice, comfy little hideaway for some animals, which
is why it is necessary to check them before they are lit.

Thanks for the History lesson, sort of sounds like our fourth of
July, where everybody get together to make a lot of noise and celebrate
civil disobediance!!! (Only we won, Guy lost, yes?)
