2977.0. "new kitten/cat ran away" by SALEM::BAILEY_K () Mon Oct 23 1989 12:21

A week ago Saturday my husband and I decided that it was time to bring
home a new kitten to liven up the two cats we have (Spaz and Repo).
I went to the local SPCA and found a 9 week old tiger kitten (we
named him Sireen because of his voice) and brought him home.

We knew there would be some discontent for the first week or so
while the boys got to know each other but something terrible
happened - Spaz ran away on Monday and we haven't seen him since.
He's my favorite cat, we've had him for almost five years.

About a year ago, we brought home "Gizmo" who has since disappeared.
Spaz and Gizmo were best of friends so I didn't expect Spaz to react
to Sireen the way he did. His last action before leaving was to
whack Sireen on the head a couple of times.

I've called every animal shelter and vet within twenty miles and
left a description and phone number with them. We also went around
to all the neighbors asking about him and have posted a $100 reward
    for his safe return.

My question is, has anyone else's cat run away like this when a
new kitten was brought home? I purposely didn't get an older cat
because I figured they'd have a harder time getting used to each
other. I'm partly blaming myself for this because Spaz would probably
still be home if I hadn't gotten the new kitten. I realize that
something could have happened to him and that it could be just a
coincidence but it doesn't make me feel any better.

    Thanks,

Kathy, Repo, and Sireen (missing Spaz)

Have you asked your neighbors to especially check any place Spaz might
have accidentally gotten shut in, like a garage, basement or storage
    shed?

Also, recheck the animal shelters frequently (like, every day). Around
here, the shelters recommend that you visit in person, because descriptions
over the phone are somewhat difficult if they have a lot of cats, or
they might have a volunteer who is not very knowlegable about cats
    and confusion happens.

Yes, it is not unusual for a resident cat with access to the outdoors
to run away when a new cat is introduced. My neighbors' cat
disappeared for two weeks under such circumstances. You may find that
Spaz is lurking nearby. It's a good idea to keep the resident cats
indoors for a few weeks until the cats adjust to each other.

Please let us know what is happening.

    Re: .0

What general vicinity are you located in? Can you provide a
    description of Spaz?

I live in a wooded area of Southern NH and have one of those
houses that "lost cats" seem to "find". If that's in your radius, I'll
    keep a lookout.

Just in case Spaz is lurking around, put some food out on the steps
and then keep an eye on it. Just because someone's eating it doesn't
mean its Spaz so have a look every now and then. Maybe you'll catch
him. And if you do, keep him in until he adjust to the new cat.

BTW - Isis spent the first three days we had Dundee bapping him
on the head with her paw and did the same thing the day the poor
little guy came home from being neutered. And they're the best
    of friends now.

    RE: .1

We checked all the neighbors. One has three huge barns and we went
right through them all (nice way to meet the new neighbors!). We
also put fliers in all the mailboxes around for about a mile in every
direction with a description and phone number and offering a $100
reward. We've also walked around in the woods near the house
    calling him.

My sister-in-law is home today and she's going to call all the shelters
    and vets again. Good idea.

    RE: .2

Spaz was lost in Candia NH (near Raymond, Auburn, and Hooksett).
We live near the Charmingfare Golf course and Goff Chevrolet.

Spaz is a 5-year old, neutered, male orange tabby with copper eyes
and a pink freckled nose. He weighs about 14 pounds (not fat,
just big), and was wearing awhite flea collar.

    RE: .3

I put some food out this morning and asked my sister-in law to look
    out for him.

Thanks everyone - I'll let you know what happens.

You might also call the police dept if you haven't already. They can
be very responsive also as they have a Animal Control Office. I have
had pretty good luck w/ them in Merrimack, NH.

Where are you located? I'll keep my eye out if it's near here.

I hope you find him. I had the same thing happen about 4 or 5 months
ago. To find out 2 days later that my poor Kitty was trapped inside
    our covered boat!

Did you say Candia? Better check Elaine's house :^) !!

Seriously though, any cat who is lost in Candia will eventually
show up at E.T.'s inn. If you are a cat, that is *the* place to
    be!!

I hope you find Spaz. Please keep us updated as you're doing.

    Yes,

Where exactly in Candia do you live? I"m about 1.5 miles from Goff's
    - off of 43 North. I'll keep an eye out for Spaz - maybe send
me mail with your phone number and address in case I spot him

I don't recall if someone said this already, but..

Maybe call the vets? Some people find lost cats and will bring
them to the vets, thinking they will remember or know of the cat..
*Sometimes* the vet may keep it for a few days..

    Good luck!!
