2966.0. "Paw trouble..please help" by DEMON::MILANESE () Fri Oct 20 1989 11:20

Hi is there anyone out there who can help me with a physical problem
    that my cat has?

One of my cats is licking the fur off one of her paws until she makes
it raw? What can I do about it?

    Thanks.

I would say she's got a problem - either the food is injured or
got burned or is irritated and she's licking it as the only way
to treat it. Check the paw over carefully and if you still can't
find anything call your vet. I think a checkup is in order.

Make sure you look between the pads too.

The only other reason that I know for a cat to groom to the point
of removing the hair is anxiety. Has your cat been under any unusual
    stress lately?

Since the licking is confined to one paw tho, I would suspect a
physical problem with the paw. How long has this been going on?

Vanessa had a hair loss along her spine near her tail. She was
constantly licking the area. The vet said that it was a hormone
deficiency and gave her a shot. The fur in the area has since gotten
softer and is growing back. She has stopped the licking too.
Moral: it may not be an injury, let your vet check it.

It could be fleas - have you tried giving her a flea bath? Just
    a thought....

also, just had another thought - could it be ringworm? check her
body over and look for scabs or little patches of hairless areas
that could be very small. Maybe a vet visit ??

It could also be food allergy, believe it or not! I found that out
the hard way, Joui starting pulling out all the fur on her feet
as part of her allergy symptoms. I have since heard from other
owners of food allergy cats that they did the same thing.
