2955.0. "Our FELINERS in CA??" by VIDEO::MORRISSEY (Love letters in the sand) Tue Oct 17 1989 22:48

Any news on our feliners in California?

I don't remember exactly where everyone is in CA
but I hope everyone is ok.

I've been watching the TV since it happened and it's
    	scary.

Me too! I haven't been able to get through to the nodes out there.

Randy is working at home today, so he has the TV on and will update
me if anything new comes up. From what he said there is a lot of
gas lines, phone lines and electricity out. He also said the amateur
radio (ham) people are working with the Red Cross.

I'm sure the Feliners out there know we are concerned and will put
something in here as soon as they can, but I to will feel better
    once noses have been counted.

Also, we need to remember that it's still pretty early out there, and
those who may be able to log in won't even be at work yet. All we can
do for now is keep our fingers crossed and wait for news.

Let's all be patient and pray for All the folks out there. It may
be days before the feliners in the Bay area are able to check in.

But I hope they know that we are worried, I also hope they let us
know what we can do to help. What types of supplies are needed,
etc, I would be more than willing to do what I can to collect canned
    goods, clothing, paper goods etc.

Randy just called with the following information (some of it may
already be known 'cause I didn't know about this until this morning):

The Epicenter was near San Jose. It appears that the most damage
is in the San Jose and San Francisco area. The official death toll
is 272. The entire marina area of San Franciso is burned out but
the fire is under control. 30 feet of the Bay Bridge dropped onto
the lower level. The biggest concern right now is 1/2 mile of
Interstate 880 in Oakland dropped onto the lower section and they
are not yet able to try to lift it because of after shocks. President
Bush has declared it a Federal distaster area.

It sounds so terrible put into writing like that, but Randy says
it looks a lot better than it sounds. People are moving around,
although everyone has been asked to stay home unless they are emergency
    workers.

Again, I guess we just wait, impatiently perhaps, but there is nothing
    else we can do.

Hello, from Santa Clara, CA. Just wanted to let you know that
Jo Ann and I are fine. Jo Ann has had extensive damage to things
inside her house. I haven't been able to get through to her by
phone since my original lucky dial to check in last night. She
says there wasn't a Birman in sight anywhere when she got home and
it took them quite a while to come out of hiding.

My house didn't fair too badly. We were without power all night.
I had alot of broken glass from my kitchen cupboards and several
things including my Decmate on the floor. My 3 cats seemed pretty
unconcerned about the whole thing. We just got the hot water back
as I was leaving for work.

WRO1 and WRO2 have been evacuated for the day due to some minor
problems with the structure. They just wanted to be able to check
it out and not have anyone worrying about it. WRO3 where I am is
pretty much a ghost building. We haven't been evacuated yet though.
This building came through pretty well (good thing since this is
where the Western Area Data Center is). I can't get through to the
Mt. View or Palo Alto office.

My biggest worry was not being able to get in touch with my father
in Capitola (near Santa Cruz). Santa Cruz is basically cut off
from everything as alot of the roads in and out are closed. Highway
17 over the mountains to Santa Cruz has buckles and landslides.
One of the few remaining roads in to Santa Cruz has just had a bridge
collapse. I did get in touch with my father at approx. 11:30 last
night and he was without power and water and has extensive damage
inside the house. Structure of the house was uncheckable at that
time. It took him approx. 7 hours to get home as he had to go south
through Salinas and then come back up to Santa Cruz.

Thanks to Mary Tamir for calling to check in. It sure does a body
good to know so many of you are thinking of us out here.

Fellow Feliners have passed on the word that Corporate Security
has reported that there was no major damage to the CA facilities
and no reports of injuries to people who were inside the buildings.
At just a few minutes past five it is hard to know who was still
inside. The buildings will be closed, at least for today.

Another (unconfirmed) report says that almost all the DEC employees
from those facilities have been contacted by the company ..and are
okay. I sure hope that report is right!

I'll be continuing to try to reach some of Jo's friends from outside
that area to see if anyone has heard how she is ...and anxiously
waiting for the official okay to put a call through to her.

Come on Jo. ...We just know that when things get back to normal
we're going to hear some funny stories from you about what happened
when the "rockin' and rollin'" started.

Just for the record...Jo Ann and her husband had just gotten on
the freeway to go home when the earthquake hit. She says that they
thought they had a flat and pulled over to the emergency lane.
When the car continued to bounce around they thought maybe something
serious was wrong and the car was going to blow up. Then they spotted
a motorcycle cop falling on the ground trying to get back to his
bike and realized that we were having an earthquake.

Me...I was under my desk at work in a building that was rolling
worse than my cruise ship (on my vacation) during the 6-8 foot
swells on the last night out.

2955.17Lucky in Morgan Hill - shaken but not hurtWR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityWed Oct 18 1989 16:1641
I'm here!!! Ken and I had to make our way back up to the office
to check on my area. It is locked up tight when my boss or I aren't
here, and the facilities people couldn't check it. My boss was
in St. Louis on a business trip, and luckily Jan was able to reach
him for me and tell him what had happened. He has a 6 year old
daughter who was staying with a sitter, and was quite worried.

The quake was centered 10 miles northeast of Santa Cruz, and 20
miles south of San Jose. That is very close to our home in Morgan
Hill. Unofficial richter scale readings put the quake at a 7.0
magnitude! We had just had a 6.2 in Morgan Hill a few years back,
and so had taken some precautions in our house, and I thank God
we did. The damage inside wasn't that bad. Most pictures stayed
on the walls thanks to special hangers, the oak bookcase/entertainment
center didn't fall down, and the 8 foot cat tree Ken built was still
upright. We were lucky. Most of our damage came from broken glasses,
and dishes, and the oil lamps that we loved so much. (does anyone
know how to get lamp oil out of off white carpeting? I almost killed
myself after accidently stepping in lamp oil, then stepping onto
the tile entry in our front room!)

Our neighbors were saints, they turned off our gas immediately,
and checked to make sure that the cats couldn't escape the house
through windows, or doors. No windows broke. The worst thing that
happened was that our back fence was pulled away from our deck.
We are above a retaining wall and you can see down to the field
    below through our planter boxes.

Our phone service is back on (limited), our power is back on, and
our gas is back on. We are being asked not to make unnecessary
phone calls, and to only use water for drinking. They are having
some problems with the water treatment plants.

I don't know how Jill Grafton or Karen Kolling are doing. I am
extremely worried about Marlene Balzer who lives in San Francisco
    by Golden Gate park.

Don't know if we will be allowed back to work tomorrow or not.
Will be in touch when we can.

2955.18CIRCUS::KOLLINGKaren/Sweetie/Holly/Little Bit Ca.Wed Oct 18 1989 16:2619
We four are okay. The worst thing that happened to us is that
Sweetie hides behind the refrigerator when he's scared, and so that's
what he did -- and the refrigerator moved about six inches closer to
the wall when he was behind it. He doesn't seem to be physically hurt,
but I'll have to think of something to do to keep this from
happening next time, my hair turns gray just thinking about it.

I was just turning into my driveway when the quake hit, and at first I
thought I had a flat tire, make that two flat times, make that the
suspension falling out of the car ( or something ). The inside of the
house is a complete mess, books, plants, plant dirt, everything
all over the place, but very luckily no serious damage. Holly
spent the evening under the bureau with her little pink tongue
hanging out and wouldn't come out for anything. Sweetie came
out for tuna. I kept Little Bit (my indoor-outdoor cat) indoors
until this morning, and he wailed from 5 am on in protest. We
were without power and phones for about 4 hours. Does anyone have any i
    ideas about the refrigerator?

2955.19CIRCUS::KOLLINGKaren/Sweetie/Holly/Little Bit Ca.Wed Oct 18 1989 16:395
By the way, my impression is that almost all the fatalities were
people caught in the two-level highway whose top level collapsed
onto the bottom level, so the odds are that folks who
haven't checked in yet are okay.

We got an update on some CA dec workplaces -- in Palo Alto, both Lytton

I was thinking about all the Feliners and Felines in CA this morning.
Glad to see that you've come through the experience o.k. One thing
I was wondering though, do you think that many kitties were left
without homes because of the quake? I think so. Although I don't

Nancy DC just forwarded most of the info about our fellow Feliners.
    Thanks Nance.

I'm so scared for all of you guys. I lived in So. California about
20 years ago, and experienced a quake of about 3.5 or so and I
know how terrified I was. I can't begin to conceive of what this
has been like for all of you. As I see the news broadcasts, and
as I read what Nance has sent me, I can't help but sit here and

I already know how they are.

My and the 3 P's prayers are with you all. Please let us know how

I just wanted to add a little story I heard yesterday. In Santa Cruz
(which was hit very hard) they were going through the remains of a
shopping center that collapsed and were able to determine that some
kittens in a pet shop had survived the collapse. They were not able
to get to them out at the time but hopefully they'll all be just fine.

My guess would be the San Francisco SPCA. The hardest hit areas in
terms of collapsed houses were the Marina district of San Francisco,
various parts of Oakland, and the Santa Cruz area. I don't
know about the organizations in Oakland and Santa Cruz, but I would
imagine that if you sent a check to the SF SPCA with a note about
what you wanted done with it, they would see it got to the right
place. I'm not able to get thru on the phone to them to find out their
    address.

Thank heavens Jo, Jan, Jill and Karen are alright!!! My eyes
were glued to the tube from one hour after the quake onward...
I didn't even realize what happened to 880 until the next morning.
The Goodyear blimp kept sending us pictures, but I don't think
Dan Rather or Ted Kopell knew what to make of it. They kept
    talking about the Bay Bridge.

I saw the saddest thing last night...I woman who lost everything,
including her pets, in the Marina Bay area. I cried! I could
never imagine being in such a position. Obviously people are most
important to worry about. But media never gives much mention to
the probably-many tiny creatures that must have been injured. My

    Hi,

Just checking in to let everyone know Molly and Iago and I came
through the Quake fine. Jo, you wrote that you were concerned about
Marlene up in SF -I spoke to her yesterday, and she's fine.

I was home when it happened, and watched chairs, lamps, pictures
and plants fall to the floor. VERY, VERY scary!!! I immediately
fled outside (in my slip!). Then I realized my husband would be
on BART (the subway system in SF) at that time, and so worried
frantically for three hours until I finally got word from him. Anyway,
all is well now.... Molly and Iago were absolutely fine, didn't
    even seem to be scared!

A friend of mine has a cat who was sleeping on the top of the
refrigerator at the time it hit. The fridge jumped out from the
wall, and the poor kitty slipped down behind and was pinned there
for awhile! Fortunately a neighbor helped her and they were able
    to get him out!

    Thanks for asking about us!

D, Hannah, Nicholas, Sam, and Tabby checking in:

San Jose proper was rattled real good and lots of stuff jumped out of
cabinets in our neighborhood (behind EASTRIDGE Mall in the foothills).
We suffered no structural damage. Hannah is deeply embarassed about
the stream of pee she left across the bathroom floor - she was on
her favorite window sill when it struck and she peed all the way
across the bathroom when heading for safety under the middle bedroom
bed. I told her is was totally understandable and totally forgiven.
Our four were trying to look like they had everything under control
by yesterday evening.....and, they did EXCEPT when we suffered another
aftershock.

The Santa Clara offices are opening this week. The San Francisco office
is badly damaged and the building will be closed for an unknown period
of time. Workers from that office will be moved to Oakland and Alameda
sites, but expect it to be a week or two before you hear from folks
in that area. At this time, we have no reports of injury or death to
any DIGITAL employee or family and, as far as I know, we are all
accounted for.

Many homes have been damaged, perhaps some destroyed, but we are all
alive. We are lucky.

Well, things are starting to settle down around here. My office
in Santa Clara is open for business again, and people seem to be
trying to get back to normal, despite all the horror around us.

They have discovered that there was less loss of life on the I-880
collapse than they first thought, thank God. Normally at that time
of day, that stretch of freeway would be bumper to bumper, but they
suspect that most people left work early to get home in time to
    watch the World Series.

The Santa Cruz area is very hard hit. The quake was centered 10
miles Northeast of Santa Cruz, and there are lots of homeless people
there now. They are trucking in bottled water, and supplies. If
anyone wants to donate to the Red Cross, they are in need of blankets
(we have a cold front coming in and they are a sea side town), can
    openers, and canned goods.

Our town is doing better. Our water is on, but they are asking
us to conserve by not using dishwashers, clothes washers, or watering
of lawns. We are also experiencing a gas shortage (gasoline) in
our town. Seems that some of the refinerys were damaged. We were
able to fill up both cars in San Jose, so that is okay now.

Tonight we pick up our new puppy, Annie, a Bernese Mt. Dog, at the
San Jose airport. The cats were just getting back to normal after
the quake...We got up this morning and barked at them, they were
not amused! Might as well get all the stress over with in one week.

I like the idea of helping out the SPCA in San Francisco. They
are a terrific organization. They are already out picking up stray
animals and taking them into the shelter.

I thought that people might be interested in how our buildings fared during and
after Tuesday's earthquake.

We have had structural engineers examine all of our buildings (UCD, UCO, UCP,
UCS and UCT). The buildings sustained no structural damage whatsoever. No
structural damage occurred at Digital buildings in Santa Clara or Cupertino,
either. Damage at Santa Clara was very slight, and they were up and
operational by midmorning on Wednesday. The FAB at Cupertino weathered the
quake very well. Cupertino began testing line equipment yesterday, and hoped
to resume operations in the manufacturing areas today. The office areas of the
Cupertino buildings suffered the worst damage of any DEC facility (with the
exception of Castro Street). MVO was operational yesterday.

Here is a summary of the damage to the research and engineering facilities in
Palo Alto and Mountain View:

NOTE: almost all office areas were trashed by the motion of the quake.
Typically, the amount of disruption increased on the upper floors. Many
bookcases and file cabinets were overturned, and many books and binders ended
up on the floor. Surprisingly, relatively few workstations and terminals
walked off of desks. We were extremely fortunate in that no disk drives were
reported damaged.

UCT (SRC)
=========

SRC suffered minimal damage. Some floor tile located on the connecting joint
between the two structures on the third floor (in the coffee room) buckled.
Some readjustment of the ceiling grid will be necessary, but there were no
safety issues affecting reentry of the building. SRC was opertional the day
following the quake. [Karen: not quite true -- there are cracks in the
cement around the stairway between ground level and the upper level
parking facility, and some bracing gizmo in place. It looks like the
stairway and ground level went one way and the upper level went
    the other way.....]

UCP (181 Lytton)
================

Aside from some cracking of wallboard in one of the stairwells, UCP escaped
relatively unscathed (which is what you would expect of a two-story, woodframe
structure). PacBell problems with DID lines made it impossible to phone into
UCP until Wednesday afternoon. UCP was operational the day following the
quake.

UCO (Stanford Square)
=====================

Much cracking of wallboard in the stairwells and other areas. A large air
conditioning unit slipped off its footings on the roof (although it did remain
on its concrete pad). One stairwell frame was warped and will have to be
repaired, although it is safe to support foot traffic. One window pane
shattered on the second floor atrium. PacBell problems made incoming
communications with UCO sporadic until Wednesday afternoon.

Because of the widespread cracking and the chiller being shaken off its
footings, I decided to close UCO to the general employee population the day
following the quake. This gave us time to doucument the damage, assess the
building more thoroughly for structural damage and effect any repairs necessary
to make the space safe for employee reentry.

The building was cleared for employees to reenter on Thursday, with the
exception of the fourth floor. We had planned on reseating the chiller unit
that morning, and requested that WRL employees not come in until noon. The
contractor discovered that they could not seismically brace the installation
in time to bring the chiller up on Thursday, and we would not allow them to
install the unit without securing it. The chiller is being mounted this
morning, and the building HVAC system should be fully operational by the end of
business today. The building was evacuated for approximately one half hour
while the crane was relocating the unit.

UCS (Castro Street)
===================

Castro Street suffered the worst damage of any DEC building in Santa Clara
County (this is according to Property Development personnel who were on site
yesterday). The building remains closed to the employee population today. We
expect to reopen the building Monday at noon. However, UCS residents should
check with their managers before showing up at the building on Monday. We
briefed the building Cost Center managers yesterday and escorted them through
the space to inspect damage. A hot line system has been set up to keep the
managers informed, and we will be briefing them again on Monday morning.

The quake sheared the heads off of five sprinkler heads on the third floor
elevator lobby and three heads on the fourth floor lobby. Occupants of the
third floor reported smelling natural gas as they were evacuating the building.
Thirteen fan coil units (air conditioning units located in the interstitial
space) at various locations on the third and fourth floors had chilled water
supply lines sheared off and leaked onto carpets and cubicle areas.

Two very large cooling towers on the rooftop jumped off their seismic isolation
pads and fell to the roof. Water supply lines in the boiler room sheared off
and inundated the room with six inches of water. Two inches of water filled
the compressor room, which contained the main electrical distribution panels
for the HVAC system. The PBX room contained an inch of water, and the punch
down blocks were inundated by water leaking from the boiler room immediately
above them.

The main electrical switch gear in the basement became quite wet by water
splashing onto it from water leaking from floors above. The motor generator
supplying emergency lighting power failed.

The electrical lines supplying control voltage to the elevators were stretched
and the wires inside snapped, disabling all three elevators. The marble facia
on the first floor was pushed back into the outer elevator doors.

Numerous light fixtures were dislocated from the ceiling grid and left
suspended by wires from the slab above. One light cover fell off a light unit
completely on the fourth floor.

After people were evacuated from the building, Facilities personnel shut off
the sprinkler system and drained the stand pipes to minimize water damage.
Likewise, city water was shut off and the water inlet supply lines to the
rooftop HVAC equipment were turned off.

Fire sprinklers were brought back up Wednesday afternoon. Normal building
power has been restored, although we are phasing this in order to inspect
lighting fixtures for damage that may affect building power if not detected
early. The HVAC system supplying cool air to the computer rooms was brought up
Wednesday afternoon, and the rooms were energized Thursday morning. Caldec is
up and connected with zero disk damage.

After a thorough drying out, phone service is back to normal on the third
floor. The rest of the space will be brought up over the weekend.

Carpeted areas were wet-vac'd and shampooed. Most carpeting appears to be
salvageable. Crews are working today to repair items affecting employee
safety: ceiling grid, light fixtures, interior window glazing, etc.

PG&E is testing the gas lines in the building today. The gas was automatically
shut off by a seismic valve during the quake.

Field repairs are being effected on the HVAC system through the weekend, and
the HVAC should be fully operational by Monday afternoon.

Battery-powered emergency lighting is being installed over the weekend to
provide a fail-safe back-up to the back-up lighting.

I am sure that I have left some details out, but I trust that people get some
picture of the extent of the damage. I would like to personally thank the
Facilities staff people who have worked so hard to bring all the buildings back
up. Many of them have been putting in 12 to 16 hour days since the earthquake,
and those at Castro Street will probably work through most of the weekend.

Again, please be reassured that none of the buildings sustained any structural
damage.

    Hello. all!!

Jim, the kids, and I are fine. We had quite an exciting time on
Tuesday!! Jim and I were on the way home from work on Highway 17,
right near the epicenter when it struck. The truck was bounced
around so badly (Jim, too, thought we had 4 flat tires and then
reconsidered the odds when he saw the road bouncing) that we had
to stop. The trees waved as if in a hurricane with no wind. The
road jumped and flew from side to side. We could see the dust from
landslides up ahead and the effect was simply incredible (in the
truest sense of the word!). Once thw r---Damn!!! Another aftershock!!
We all had to run outside.--- Once the road calmed down enough to
continue, we drove on. The road had fissures from one side to the
other; boulders had come down in landslides, with one resting on
the passenger's side of a station wagon that we passed; aftershocks
continued to roll along for the next 4 miles or so. The northbound
lanes were stopped solid by debris from landslides. The center
cement barricade (you know the types--about 30 inches high) had
been broken in a number of places and offset a number of inches.

There were lifts and buckles in the road inches high.

Once we got to Scotts Valley, we slowed for all of the stop lights
that were out and all of the drivers were *extremely* courteous.
Three miles later we started to see the real destruction of Felton.
Bricks were down everywhere. Windows in nearly every building were
out. Everyone was standing outside, staying close to each other.
As we continued to the daycare, we were passed by a fire truck in
full gear. I was pretty nervous by then.

The kids were fine--one girl had the foresight to pull Steven under
a desk for protection, thank God. Jennifer was at a girlfriend's
and the other girl's mother grabbed both of them by the hair and
hauled them to a safer place.

When we got home, we saw the real damage. We lost our picture window,
our chimney is too damaged to use, and our full propane tank had
been rolled by one of the two retaining walls that had broken.
Worse than that, though, we had lost all of our cats!! (Or thought
we had !) The cats slowly came back and we had 4 of the 10 back
before going to bed that night. I was most worried about Gwen,
though, the little Japanese Bobtail who had never been outside.
That night was so horrible. We had aftershocks every few minutes,
it seemed; we had no power, heat, or knowledge other than what was
on the car radio; and we weren't sure if the propane tank was leaking
or not. As we stayed close to home and had our own version of a
tailgate party, the cats started to return: Merlin, Gandalf, LandShark,
and Blackie all came back that night. I was never so glad to see
    them in my life.

Once it got too dark and cold to stay outside, we went to a neighbor's
house with our sleeping bags and stayed there that night. The next
morning the news said we had about 1100 aftershocks and I felt like
I was awake for each one of them. Gandalf followed us to the
neighbor's house and insisted on coming with us despite 2 Rotweillers
and Sam, the cat. He did his best to make himself at home and crawled
under the comforter to sleep with us. He definitely did not want
to be separated from his people.

The next day (was it only Wednesday?) we went back to the house
to inspect the damage more throughly. That's when we discovered
the extent of the damage to the chimney and the two retaining walls.
Gwen finally came out from under the sofa at about noon that day,
sniffing the air as she poked her head out. I had looked everywhere and
had called everywhere so I have no idea if she was hiding under
there the entire time or not. I was so glad to see her!!

Things have progressed well since then. The rest of the cats returned
--Hurray!!! (Sammie, Sage, Basrah, and Sasha) with the exception
of Rocky who returned over 25 hours after the earthquake hit. Since
then, they have been as close as possible with at least 5 cats sleeping
with us each night--(and one for each of the kids) a new record.
Needless to say, we're doting on them as much as they're doting
    on us.

We ordered our window today, have spoken to FEMA (emergency funds)
people, and are planning our reconstruction. We'll take one step
at a time and I know we'll be okay. Thanks for thinking of us and
I want you to know I was thinking of all of the FELINErs, too,
especially when the cats were still unaccounted for. Thanks for
your prayers and thoughts, and I'll keep you posted on our progress.
It's so good to be in touch with everyone again!!!! :-) :-)

    Jill

P.S. Jan, was I in a coma on Wednesday night? For the life of
me, I don't remember talking to you. What did I say? Both Jim
and I are at a loss. Most of all, I wonder who you did speak to!!

I heard a plea from the San Francisco SPCA that they are in desperate
need of foster homes for some of the displaced cats that they have.
Many of the people living in the Marina district have had their

are looking, they need places to board their cats.

There was an article in this morning's NY Times, about the animals
at the SF zoo. Apparently after every earthquake, the zoo checks
its logs to see if the animals exhibited any unusual pre-quake
behavior, to check out the theory of animals sensing quakes in
advance. The only animal to do this this time was a tabby cat who
lives in the elephant house; she refused to go indoors (where her
food dishes are) both the day of the quake and the day afterwards.
Since then, she's been back to normal. The article was titled
something like "What did the cat know?"

    "The Cat Knows A Lot"

I live in San Francisco and my three sure knew something was up.

Read note 2990 - it's an introduction of me and my three, Pippin
Gino and Stitch and some of their behavior during the quake.

I think that our donation should go directly to this fund.
If anyone has reservations about this please let me know. I'm
waiting on one more donation and then I'll be sending the money
    off.

Just a little footnote. I took Holly into the vet because she
has a small cut or somesuch under her chin. It isn't serious,
but I wanted to be sure it wouldn't abscess. I noticed it over the
weekend. The vet says it is unlikely to date back as far as the earthquake.
I never thought to check the
cats very thoroughly all over their bodies after the quake -- I assumed
that because they were walking around with no sign of trouble, everything
was (physically) okay. So, I just thought I'd enter this note to remind
others in similar situations that a thorough checkover is a good thing
    to do.

After consideration, I decided that I'd better send our
contributions to the SPCA rather than CFA. I want to be sure
that there's not problems with the matching gift form.

BTW- a total contribution of $70.00 was sent. Thanks to all.

This is both Christmas related and Earthquake related so I didn't
know exactly where to put it. I thought these poems were really
good and wanted to share them with you all.

The following is borrowed (without permission) from Leigh Weimers
column in the San Jose Mercury News (12-25-89).

CHRISTMAS IS THE TIME TO SAY IT WITH A RHYME

WHAT'S SHAKING--On past Christmases I've made various stabs at poetry--
all right, at doggerel--to express the sentiments of the season,
but this year is different. Something about having the earth move
under our feet also seems to move the creative juices, and others
have put pen to verse better than I. For instance Faye Isaak's
reworking of "Jingle Bells." Her refrain:

            Jiggle bells, Jiggle bells, fis-
         sures in the clay.
            Falling rocks and aftershocks
that jolt and jerk and sway.
            Jiggle bells, Jiggle bells, fis-
         sures in the clay.
Oh what a ride on our moun-
tainside when Mother Earth gave way.

    And a sample verse:

            Nothin's in the cupboard,
         nothin's in the drawer,
            Shelves and all their contents
         are shattered on the floor.
            There stands Ethel's vase, as
         ugly as before,
But my Lalique is in the creek
         along with my armoire.

    Good writing. Everybody sing!

A COUPLE OF CARDS--Chuck and Mary Stelecky of Boulder Creek, meanwhile,
are regaling those on their Chrismas card list with this very
California version of "The Night Before Christmas":

'Twas the 17th of October and
         all through the state,
Not a glass was unbroken, not
         even a plate.
Chuck in his office and I in
         my car
            Had just finished work when
         Little Big One jarred.
With our hearts in our throats
we said 'bye to our bosses
            And raced through the red-
woods to size up our losses.
            The house was still standing;
         the chimney had fallen.
My antiques lay in pieces; for
         the cats we kept callin'.
In the kitchen I paused and
         took a deep breath;
            All my dishes and glassware
         had marched to their death.

            The water heater danced,
         books and shelves took a dive;
In a closet four eyes shined--
         the cats were alive!
No chance to settle in for a
         long winter's nap;
            The quakes kept on rolling.
         We really felt trapped.
Chuck rigged up a radio and
         we huddled around
To listen with fear as reports
         trickled down.
            The Bay Bridge was flat-
         tened. The Nimitz pancaked.
The city was burning like the
         '06 quake.
So many were homeless or in-
         jured or dead
We felt lucky to have a roof
         over our head.
            Then suddenly, GOOD NEWS!
         Chuck let out a wail:
            "Our troubles are over!
         They're sending Dan Quayle!"
            On Brokaw! On, Rather! They
         all came around.
We got sick of their choppers
         buzzing low over town.
            The roads jammed with gap-
         pers; our path was impeded
As we tried to go buy the
         supplies that we needed.
            One Santa Cruz man
summed it up in a trice:
            "TOURISTS GO HOME! Or
         bring beer and ice."
            It's been two months now
since our nerves were first jan-
         gled.
            We've spackled and swept,
but our lives are still tangled.
So Santa, if you've got no
         chimney to vault
            Don't blame us poor humans
         --it's San Andreas's Fault!

FINALLEIGH--To sum up, if the message of Christmas is love and helping
one another through good times and bad then our Christmas arrive
a couple of months early this year and the spirit continues even
to today. May your Christmas be merry. It could be verse.
