JFCL if Nebula isn't treated.

| There is a discussion of ringworm and cats going on in another topic.
I think the topic is titled "Abyssinian", but I am not sure. To
answer your question, Yes, cats do get ringworm. You are right,
ringworm is a fungus, and it will not go away by itself. If is
is ringworm, you would be better off to start treatment right away
before it gets much worse.

| Well, I took her to the vet this morning, and they are culturing a skin
scraping from her leg (poor kitty!) to make sure, but in the meantime I
have a bunch of fungicide cream to smear on her once a day for several
weeks. I hope she has forgiven me by the time I get home from
work...she disappeared under the bed as soon as I took the top off her
carrying box when I got her home. She really HATES car rides!
Especially rides to the dreaded VET.

| Just a note in case anyone catches Ringworm from their cat.
I caught it from Zula about 2 months ago. I was using Micatin on
the spots (arm and neck) and they cleared up quickly. It seems when
one spot cleared another would start. Then I got a one on my scalp.
I started to get scared because I don't have much hair as it is
and didn't like the fact that I was going bald. I went to the doctor
and he told me to keep using the Micatin since it was doing the
trick on my arm and neck. So that was a little over a month ago
and the bald spot kept growing and it is not clearing. I called
the doctor yesterday because he said he would call in a prescription
if the Micatin didn't take care of it. When I called he said he
wanted to see me so I went in this morning. He had me see a
dermatologist. The dermatologist said I should have been put on
the GRIFULVIN right away. It seems that the ringworm will not go
away on your scalp with anit-fungal creams alone because the fungus
actually goes below the skin into the hair follacles. I will be
on this medication for 60 days plus I also have a bottle of Lotrimin
solution to put on my scalp for the next 60 days. The prescriptions
cost $50.00 for a 30 day supply and then I will have to spend another
$30.00 for the next 30 day supply of Grivulvin. He said that my
hair may or may not ever grow back. Thank god the bald spot (about
the size of a silver dollar now) is on the side of my head covered
by hair rather than the crown of my head where it would show.
When I first saw the doctor and he just told me to keep using the
Micatin I asked him if there was any medication that I should be
taking internally and he said NO. I told him that I read in a medical
book that the patients are usually put on GRIFULVIN but he said
that people only scare themselves by reading medical manuals. Well
the book was right.
Zula's ringworm is all gone and his fur is totally grown back.
I just hope he can't catch it from me now. My husband never caught
it.

| Pam,
Your hair will probably grow back. As we talked in mail, I was
surprised that your dr. didn't put you on the Grisfulvin (sp) right
away. Back many years ago, I had also gotten ringworm from a cat that
had it, and my dr. put me on the grisfulvin right away. It is really
expensive!!! As is treatment for the cat. But, it does work, and you
will probably notice improvement quickly.
Good Luck, and let us know how YOU are doing.

| Oh yeah, did they tell you to eat before taking the pill??? You might
notice that if you don't, it will make you slightly nausauous.

They told me to take the pill with something fatty like icecream.
Oh, darn it, I have to eat icecream every day for the next 60 days,
oh, too bad ;-} It's either Icecream or whole milk. Well whole
milk is just as fattening so I'll take the icecream. The reason
is because the medication isn't absorbed well unless there are fats
in your stomach. He mentioned a side effect is bad headaches.
I took one about 2 hours ago with icecream and feel fine right now.
He told me that he didn't want to scare me but that some peoples
hair does not grow back. I'm sure mine will because I can see stubbles
in the center where it is trying to heal.
I was told that it takes a LONG time for cats hair to grow back,
months. Zula's started growing back the very next day after he
was put on his medicine and withing a week was half grown in. 4
weeks later you could never tell he had bald spots. Boy is he getting
beautiful!
