2899.0. "The Case of the Missing Eyebrow" by VMSDEV::BALLOU (It's not slow, it's careful!) Fri Sep 29 1989 02:47

I noticed something this morning that really spooked me. As Winchester
was studying my face up close :-), I noticed something didn't exactly
look right. Then I figured out what was odd: His left eyebrow is
gone! I'm fairly sure he used to have one :-)

Is this something that should worry me? I think I remember reading
that occasionally a cat will lose a whisker and that the whisker will
grow back. But a whole eyebrow?

Of course, now that I've noticed it, I can't help but see how lopsided
he looks. Do you think he'll notice me staring at him? :-)

You wouldn't happen to have a bratty spouse or SO would you?
My husband thought it would be interesting to see what Mao would
look like without eye-brow whiskers, so he trimmed them off!

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Oh - Mao also
used to singe (sp?) her whiskers sometimes when she jumped up
onto the stove when I was cooking.
Any chance of that happening? Oh, one other thought - do you
have more than one cat? I know mommy cats sometimes chew the whiskers
off of their kittens to keep them from roaming too far. Maybe one
of your other cats is having maternal flashes with bad aim :-)

Maybe Winchester is just trying out his Halloween Costume? Oc course
some cats will do anything just to get noticed! :-)

When Spot wants extra attention she will go into the garage and
hang cobwebs all over her face. That bound to get Mummie and Daddy
    to pay attention!

    re 2899.1 -

Hmmph. I was hoping to beat Nancy to the punch on this one, but
once again, the faster typer beats the faster reader...

anyways - It wasn't that I wanted to see what Mao would look like
with the eyebrows off - I was trimming my nails, and she was very
interested, so I took off one eyebrow whisker on her - and she
started purring! So, being one to keep the cat happy at all costs,
I naturally continued the activity! (stopping before I started on
her whiskers, of course - too much of a good thing, and all that...)

BTW - some fanciers associations like some breeds to not have eyebrows,
so perhaps your kitty was just preening!

Nancy, is this true?? I knew Jack was strange but .................

P.S Jack, I'm only teasing. You really are a wonderful person.

2899.5Jack?? Strange??? um.......CRUISE::NDCNancy Diettrich-Cunniff-I wanted it allFri Sep 29 1989 13:537
I'd be the first to admit that Jack is , hrumph..how shall I say

    this...um... unique...yes UNIQUE, that's the ticket!

Mao is a real motorboat. You can hear her purr from the
    next room over.

2899.6I married one too!!SWAT::COCHRANEBrace yourself - a brace of cats!Fri Sep 29 1989 14:0318
Uh, Nancy, I don't think you have a monopoly! ;-)

My husband Ian said last night he wants to name our new
kitten - Ibuprophin (sp?) His reasoning? "Sooner or later
her antics are bound to cure a headache!"

    Here Ibu, here Ibu......no, I don't think so! ;-) ;-)

Since the new kitten and Boogie are both silver tabbies,
he also said that when my parents come up, he's going
to bring the kitten out and say, "We washed Boogie and
look what happened - she shrunk!"

Well, I suppose if he agrees to an asthmatic having
five cats, I think I'll keep him around!!

Re. .1 and following:

No, I live alone, so I'm sure it wasn't mischievious human intervention :-)

However, Winchester does have a sister, Mickie. I'm not convinced I can imagine
Mickie nipping off his eyebrows :-)

Alas, Winchester was diagnosed last week as having FUS. (This was heartbreaking
because I knew about the danger of FUS and I thought I had done everything I
could to prevent it.) I don't know how long he's been missing his eyebrow,
since I just noticed yesterday that it was missing. I'm worried (probably
needlessly) that the missing eyebrow may be related to him developing FUS.

I enjoyed reading the previous replies. But I'm hoping someone will actually
reply and tell me I'm being my usual overprotective self :-)

                                                 - Ken

P.S.: By the way, both cats are strictly indoor cats.

The eyebrow has zero to do with FUS. As long as it grows back and he
doesn;t have hair loss elsewhere, I wouldn't worry about it. Even
if further hair loss develops (in which case se your vet), it is
generally a non-serious treatable thing. I think what we're saying is
that this is not a Major Worry situation.

2899.9Thanks, I can sleep again :-)VMSDEV::BALLOUIt's not slow, it's careful!Sat Sep 30 1989 01:485
Thanks, Karen. Rationally, I thought it was not something to lose
sleep over. However, I feel much more confident with your reassurance
    (as well as their vet's).

    Ken -
We'd rather you were a little overprotective than neglectful
any day!!!!!!! Thanks for caring so much.
