| Jan,
Why would anyone flame you for trying to find a home for this
cat? Maybe someone in Doc's current neighborhood would be interested
since they have such a tree rat problem.

No flames here. Wish I could run a cat farm for all these poor
animals seeking homes. Sigh. I'm no help, I'm afraid.

I almost flipped when I saw this (I've always wanted a coon cat)
but when I saw who entered it...I realized you're on the other
side of the country..... :( (and it's a good thing to or Nippa
wouldn't speak to me at all...)
Well Good luck! I can't believe you'd have a hard tme finding him
a home.

| Nancy,
I was concerned about being flamed for possibly having to put him
to sleep if we can't find him a home. I wanted everyone to understand
what was behind that decision.
Thanks to everyone for the good wishes and support.
BTW - Maybe we could ship Doc to his new home (wouldn't Nippa be
excited).

interested in Mr. Who if this friend of mine could bring him with her
when she comes (I imagine the airline will charge her, but don't know
how much)? If so, put a reply here, and I'll get in touch with her

I was contacted by Pam Levine who knows someone out here who may
be able to keep or place Doc so hopefully this will all be resolved
soon.

<FLAME ON>
It is replies like this that I was trying to avoid. You have no
idea what the circumstances are behind this decision yet you make
a remark like the one in .5. The owner of Dr. Who does not consider
him to be "only a cat" and the circumstances of him moving to a
no pets apartment were not totally under his control. As I said
before this was an agonizing decision for the owner and we have
been doing everything we can to avoid having to put Doc to sleep.

Some people KILL their pets because it's INCONVENIENT to keep them.
That is wrong, immoral and obscene.

That's true. But that's not really what's being discussed here. What's
being discussed here is a way around a difficult situation. And it seems
as if this situation is resolved. I haven't seen you offer to help at all
with this cat, so casting value judgements is really uncalled for. Any
more responses like this and, as moderator, I will be forced to act.

2799.11 | Have cat carrier, Will travel? | CSC32::K_KINNEY | | Fri Aug 25 1989 19:55 | 24 |

Moving him across the country is not going to be too big
of a problem. Mine have been with me from Connecticut
to Arizona to Texas to Colorado where we live now. The
airlines charges about $50 to travel them with cargo in
a kitty cage. Usually one would try to get them relaxed
at the vet prior to the trip with tranquilizers. For Dr.
it may need to be a short trip if he is needing water/litter.
They put them on the plane at the very last minute (I always
watched mine and they ride on the cart seat next to the
baggage person). If they go in the cabin, they need to be in
a cat carrier that will fit (airline regs) under the seat
and you can only have 1 pet per cabin. They need to be able
to stand up and turn around in this carrier (or be so sound
asleep that they don't wake up till they get there). That
runs about $35 plus the cost of the carrier.
I would love him but I'm afeared Catnippy would see an adult
cat coming in as her replacement (or worse) and I would come
up short one cat one way or the other.
Good luck finding him a home.

| Well, I've just gotten off the phone with the woman who will be
taking Doc. It sounds like the perfect situation for him...a
house with fenced yard and a cat door so he can go in and out
when he wishes. Also, she lives very close to my house so I
may try to work out visitation rights.
I'd like to thank Pam Levine publically for moving so quickly
and contacting her friend; and her friend for opening her home
to one more feline companion...more evidence of what the caring
members of the FELINE notes file can accomplish when they set
their mind to it. I knew I could count on you guys (and the
support you gave was much appreciated). Doc's owner is very
grateful too. It is a tremendous relief to him that Doc will
be going to such a good home instead of the other alternative.
Thank you very much FELINErs,
Jan

Special needs kitties are real challenges to place.
The members of this notesfile really are very special people!
Look at all the good we can do together.
What a great way to start my week!

| I took Doc to his new home yesterday. It's a great place. He's
got a fenced in yard in front and back and a cat door to go in and
out when he pleases. There are other kitties there to keep him
company. The only name I remember for the other kitties was Phoebe,
the Maine Coon look-alike. There was also a beautiful black cat
with bright gold eyes and a blue boy that reminded me alot of my
kitty Carrie (without the white tuxedo).
When we let him out of the carrier he promptly explored the kitchen
then scooted on down the hall to the bedroom to check out the sleeping
accomodations. I wanted to have a chance to pet him and say goodbye
but the last I heard he was in the bedroom hiding under the couch.
I think he'll be very happy there and Gerry seems to be a great
kitty-mom.
Thanks again for everyone's help and support.

We thought Basrah and Rocky were the last two to be placed until I
read this (just now!). I'm so glad to hear that Dr. Who was successfully
placed. Who knows, it could have been 3 for us!! Rocky and Basrah say
hello to you and Dr. Who.

2799.20 | Anytime you want!!! | REDWOD::GRAFTON | | Tue Sep 19 1989 15:20 | 18 |
| Jan,
You are welcome at our house anytime you want!! (Are you busy this weekend?)
Rocky and Basrah are doing fine (kind of). Through an attack of Rocky's
we discovered that he has Feline Asthma. He's responding to the medication,
though, and we have hopes that we won't have to medicate him constantly. He
goes back in two weeks for reevaluation and on-going treatment discussion.
Basrah is still out of sorts because no one accepts her as queen of
the house. She mingles with us, though, and comes for her loving every
morning like clockwork. She just can't seem to determine why Sammie, Sasha,
Sage, and Blackie refuse to admit that she is now head honcho. ;-)
While Basrah is a beautiful cat, I have to admit that Rocky has won our
hearts already. I'm sure he would love to have you come and visit, too.

| Re: (Are you busy this weekend?)
Well, kind of...I'm leaving for Florida, a 4-day cruise in the Bahamas
(if there's anything left when Hugo and Iris get done) and 3 days
at Disney World. I'll be back October 6th though so anytime after
that that is convenient for you would be great.
Poor Basrah, she is so used to ruling the roost. When we tried
to introduce Amelia and Bailey to Dave's four Basrah and Amelia
got into all kinds of screeching matches over who was in charge.
I adore Rocky. Does he do the tale wiggling thing for you. I can
almost get him to do it on request. He knows how much I like it
so when he would come to me for attention I'd say "Rocky, do your
tale thing" and he wiggle that little stub tale for me. I wonder
when he developed the asthma, I haven't seen him in so long I didn't
realize he was having problems.

2799.22 | Wow!! A trip! | REDWOD::GRAFTON | | Wed Sep 20 1989 11:50 | 21 |
| Jan,
What a trip!! Be careful, though, because of the weather. It looks really
threatening. Get in touch when you return and we'll set up something! I
can't wait.
Basrah does have her moments but we give her tons of love and she's found
every dark corner in the house where she can curl up and feel safe. She
even leaps to the tops of doors and watches us as we pass by. It's
wierd to look up and see this cat staring down from the top of a door
like a vulture. She's a lovely cat.
Rocky sure does his tail-wagging thing!! It looks like a tail trying to
stir a cat! Evidently he's never had asthma before. We'll just take it
as it comes. He's doing a lot better than when he had his attack. That
was pretty distressing for him. Right now he's on cortisone to combat the
asthmatic reaction, a bronchial dilater to open his passageways, and an
antibiotic to clear fluid from his lungs. In two weeks he goes back to the
vet for another check-up. Luckily he takes pills like a charm.
